Redskins evaluating cornerbacks

By Jody Foldesy
THE WASHINGTON TIMES

West Virginia cornerback Adam "Pac-Man" Jones, one of the top possibilities to replace departed Washington Redskins veteran Fred Smoot, completed a visit to the club's headquarters yesterday in advance of the April 23-24 NFL Draft.
Next week the Redskins will play host to Jones' counterpart at the top of the draft's cornerback class, Miami's Antrel Rolle, as the team attempts to shore up a defense that suffered several big losses in the first week of free agency.
The other apparent top contender to go to Washington with the ninth overall pick is Auburn cornerback Carlos Rogers. However, it is unclear when Rogers might visit Redskin Park.
Visits by draft-eligible players aren't made public in intra-league communications the way veteran free-agent trips are. Redskins vice president of football operations Vinny Cerrato said Washington won't be releasing any information about draftee visits this year.
Jones' trip was confirmed by a source familiar with the situation. Rolle's agent, Ben Dogra, said by phone that his client would be visiting Thursday.
Interestingly, Dogra said another of his clients, Oklahoma wide receiver Mark Clayton, was at Redskin Park yesterday. Although Washington is believed to be targeting cornerbacks in the first round, it apparently is keeping its options open. Clayton is expected to be one of the top receivers selected.
Among Jones, Rolle and Rogers, at least one should be gone by No. 9, and all three should be selected by the middle of the first round.
Rolle and Rogers, both about two inches taller than the 5-foot-10 Jones, might be viewed as better fits physically for the scheme run by Redskins assistant head coach for defense Gregg Williams.
Williams got great production last year out of veteran Shawn Springs, another 6-foot cornerback, who deftly shifted among coverage schemes, blitzed frequently and proved more than adequate in run support.
But Jones is extremely quick and might have the best pure coverage skills of the group. In addition, he is a talented kick returner, a position that remains in flux for Washington with Chad Morton coming off two so-so seasons and a torn ACL.
Clayton, like recently acquired veteran receivers Santana Moss and David Patten, isn't terribly big. But the 5-10 prospect was extremely productive for the Sooners and boosted his draft stock with a fine performance at the Senior Bowl in late January.
Washington's receiving corps appears full with Moss, Patten, James Thrash, Taylor Jacobs and Darnerien McCants filling the top five slots. But the club is still trying to trade Rod Gardner, a deal that could get done on draft day, and apparently is open to shaking up the group with a high-profile rookie addition.

Although Washington is believed to be targeting cornerbacks in the first round

That's what I like to hear!!!!
"I was on the sideline and guys were talking about the score, and then it hit me -- we won by 21. I came in the locker room and I yelled it out, and immediately I just kind of broke down in tears. Because I miss Sean, you know."

Shouldnt this be in the draft forum?... anyway, I'm happy to hear this too. We could really use a top flight CB.

But if Mike Williams is still on the Board, you've got to take him first. We'd be stupid not to.

Good article! I hope we land one of the three; my choice would still be Rolle. I think the CB spot is a bigger concern than the MLB spot right now. GW can plug pretty much anyone in at MLB but he's a little more specific when it comes to his CB.

How on Earth would Mike Williams still be there at #9? he's gonna be snatched asap. Let's focus on reality here.

Exactly, SkinsLaVar is right. There's no way MWilliams will be there until the ninth pick.

Face it, we're going to get Pac-man or ARolle

I find it funny that almost every article I read mentions that the kick and punt return specialist jobs are up in the air because Morton was hurt last year. Didn't Antonio Brown come out of nowhere at the end of last year to make some decent returns. We also have Thrash, too. I really doubt that the fact that Pac Man can be a kick returner will be a large consideration for Gibbs & Co.

Moss is also considered to be a returner.

I really want us to get a DE in our 9th pick.
But for CB i would really like to get Pacman Jones, but if hes taken then Antrel Rolle

The big question is who will Pac-Man or Rolle choose as their agents?
With our luck Pac-Man will choose Rosenhause and Rolle will choose the Poston's.
I hate these guys ......I hope I can say that without having to go to confession.

We do not need another Kick Returner!!!!

We possibly have CMorton. We already have JThrash and ABrown.
We don't need SMoss to be a KR, JThrash and ABrown can get it done. Easily!! JGibbs should not lean on Pac-man just because he has KR skills. We already possess that skill in JThrash and ABrown. Especially, ABrown.

Chad Morton has been a complete bust since coming to the Skina and can't be relied upon to return kicks. Thrash, while solid, isn't going to break any big returns and I think it's obvious from last year that we need a threat on our punt/kick returns. Out return team hardly did anything to help our offense get into good field position. Brown lookes good in limited opportunites, however that fumble of his was very costly and it'll take some time before Gibbs turns over the fulltime reutrn duties to him, if ever. I suspect that Moss will get some opportunites as a returner and Pacman will as well if we draft him.

ABrown will be our next KR and PR if he is given the chance. Guarantee it.
He has all he needs. Speed, agility, and vision. He is our next KR and PR, just give him the chance.

i read somewhere that pac man jones is a better cover 2 type corner... he is more adept at playing zone...

WVU runs over 90% zone... or a variation of a cover 2 scheme...

I am not sure if he fits our scheme... i tend to lean towards Rolle...

but i honestly will take either one over Walt (i cant cover) Harris....

Our CB problems vastly outweigh our need for a go to WR at this point.

With our possession recievers and running game we can still move the ball and score points. We can hide our problems at MLB with two great OLB's and two run-stopping safeties.

You can't hide inferior cornerbacks..... they are out on an island.

Oh I forgot we have Jimoah \:D/
