Redskins Sign Linebacker Brian Allen

Post by Jake »

Backup is Always A Good Thing
By John Keim

The Redskins hope they continued to bolster a unit that lacked solid players by signing linebacker Brian Allen.

He's not expected to be anything more than a backup, but the Redskins do plan on him helping their kick coverage. The common thinking among coaches is that the better linebacker depth a team has, the better their kick coverage.

Allen spent the past three seasons with Carolina, which finished fifth in kick coverage in 2003. The Panthers were seventh in the NFC a year ago.

Allen, 6-foot and 232 pounds, has played in 46 games, starting nine times. St. Louis selected him in the third round of the 2001 NFL Draft out of Florida State and he played three games that season. Houston selected him in the expansion draft and later released him in the spring of 2002.

I am somewhat surprised by this. I thought the Skins weren't going to sign anyone until after the draft. Go figure.

This makes sense... He will replace Marshall as the backup for Arrington and Washington so he can move to MLB

I assume Gibbs said there'd be no more significant free agent signings. If he didn't say it, that's certainly what he meant.

This guy is training camp fodder. He doesn't count.

:hmm: I thought we were pretty stocked at LB last year. A couple vital parts were out due to injury, but, overall, wasn't our LB corps solid?

Now, our kickoff coverage did need improvement, and I'm hoping this guy can definitely help us out.

I'm with you Redeemed, that is a badly written lead. It should say something to the effect of: "In an ongoing effort to address weakness on special teams, the Redskins signed ..."
The LB corps was most assuredly not weak.

I think this guy is just the type of player we need for our special teams, especially since GW rotates so many linebackers on defense.
SPIT HAPPENS!!

Didn't Washington make it to the pro bowl?
Didn't Pierce deserve to go to the pro bowl?
That makes two out of three, right?
I am confused by the "Lack of solid players comment"?
Did this person watch any Redskins games last year? Or he dosen't grasp the concept of team defense.

He had to be speaking of the special teams, they were depleted last season due to injuries to players like Bowen LA ans Barrows

Don't get ahead of yourself. I like this signing. He was signed for special teams and will help improve our unit. He has been a solid member of the Panthers. Now it's time for him to be a solid member of the Redskins.
