North Carolina wins it all

Tar Heels win first national title since 1993

ST. LOUIS (AP) -- Of course, there was no way it was going to be easy. North Carolina did it, though, and now it's time to stop asking Roy Williams that doggone question.

Sean May had 26 points and the Tar Heels didn't allow a basket over the final, excruciating 2½ minutes Monday night to defeat Illinois 75-70, a win that finally gave Williams, the 17-year coaching veteran, the national championship that was missing from his otherwise stellar resume.

I'm no fan of North Carolina, but for the sake of my bretheren here on TH.net (NC43Hog et. al.), I will say Congrats on the season.

. . . . .and watch our for MD next year

I guess that's why when you hear Terp fan, you think of riots and bottles thrown at an opposing players mom, who happens to me a Maryland Alumn, and when you hear Heel fan, you think of Dean Smith and tradition.

They still suck. (just kidding).

I was actually rooting for you guys last night. I like Sean May. Hope the Wizards draft him and convert him to Power Forward. Then we can trade Kwame to the Redskins for Rod Gardner.

I just hope he stays for he senior year - he has said he wants to, but you never know.

Yeah, ya think Kwame could have used a few years in college to develop????

By the way, I grew up an ACC fan, Maryland and NC State in the early 70's, then UVA (brother went there), now UNC (married a UNC alumni and have lived in NC since 1987). Actually pull for all four, just gets tough when they play each other.

Not this year it didn't...UVA can't beat anyone, NC can't lose to anyone and MD could only beat Duke and UVA.

I'd hate to be Bill Self.....upset in the first round and the guy he replaced wins the National Title with someone else's players.

Williams is a class act tho - he gave a shout out to Matt D. saying "Remember these are mostly the guys Matt recruited". Nice gesture.

Yeah, I'm sure Matt D appreciated it, drunk and alone in his hotel room with the loaded revolver.

Don't feel too sorry for him, he got a bum deal, but has already turned down three coaching offers and should be on the sidlines of a major program next year. Maybe UVA!

I hope so.....that'll mean the Terps can continue their domination of UVA in basketball.

I've been watch UNC play basketball for almost fifty years and still note the same factors in their games:
1) Sub par shooting and poor play by their opponents. Illinois missed its last four uncontested shots and through away the ball once. A typical team choke against the tarheels.
2) Missed calls by the officials in UNC's favor. Please don't tell me it doesn't happen. Sean May's obvious walk near games' end (no call). May's charging foul which floored his opponent and netted him a basket (no call), UNC's aerial time out, which the player did not call, several refusals to call fouls against UNC big men under the basket- one replay showed at least 3 fouls on one play.

I have no axe to grind here. I don't dislike UNC and don't know Illinois from Spunky River Tech. Still, I marvel that a college basketball program can continue to cow opponents and officials after so many years. I really don't think I've ever seen officials call a good game when they're involved or one of their opponents in an important game not play like a bunch of chumps.Even when teams beat them, they don't play to their potential. Go figure.

:hmm:

Let's not forget the moving screens from Illinois.

You can make those comments about any game depending on the officiating crew (ACC, Big Ten, Big East). To say that UNC got all the breaks all year is . . . false.

I guess they didnt' deserve to win :hmm:

hey i agree 100% that the moving screens kept them in the game along with carolina shooting nothing but outside shots.but carolina did what they had to do and that was win the ballgame.matt d deserves alot of the credit for recruiting these players now the concern is how many will be back for a repeat performance.crossing my fingers and hoping for the best for all the players and good job by all involved
coaching staff included.

I'm obviously not, but a former co-worker of mine was on the Maryland Freshman Team, the year before Lefty started. He said he was stoked about basketball season his Sophomore year until the first day of practice.

Lefty's first move was to wipe out all the teams except Varsity. Then he decided to have a scrimmage, all his incoming blue-chippers against all the returning players.

To make a long story short, Frank gets out on the court and he stands at the top of the key. His team has the ball and they pass it to him, he shoots it and scores.

The blue chippers take the ball down and score and then Franks team gets the ball back, runs down the court and the same thing happens. They pass it to Frank at the top of the key, he shoots and scores.

Frank makes the same shot 3 more times and finally Lefty calls a TO. Frank thinks he is going to get the praise of a lifetime as Lefty calls him over to the bench.

He says, "Son, what's your name?"

Frank gives him his name and Lefty says, "Son.....you are the worst (expletive) basketball player I have ever seen. Clean out your locker and get the hell out of here!"

Tough coach....

Yikes! He addressed our squads a few times, but obviously wasn't as tough on us kids.

I do remember John Lucas being a nice guy and helpful. I got to see him from afar recently as our local Texas A&M Corpus Christi team took on Oklahoma State. His kid is a player....and has no problem shooting (wants the shot). I'll take a player whose willing to take the shot anyday over a player whose afraid to take it.
God bless our troops and Joe Gibbs.
