I am very surprised but...

I am more upset about Brown not coming to the Redskins than Smoot or Pierce leaving. I know that is strange but here is my reasoning. I say it is better for both Pierce and Smoot and the Redskin orginization that they leave. They both went to teams with cap room that needed immediate defensive improvement and where willing to pay for it.

The money it would cost to retain Smoot/Pierce is not as important as some other teams. Back to the subject BROWN. I feel it is both in HIS best interest and the Redskins to come here. He can rotate in, play along other great players, and make his impact felt w/o a big target on his back.

This makes me mad b/c it was Win/Win situation for us and Brown. Now its a lose/lose. I tell you I wish the best for Smoot and Pierce, I understand why they left and honestly I probably would have as well if I was in their situation. But Brown I just hope ... no KNOW he'll forvever rue the day he passed on being a Redskin. Good luck staying heathy.

I didn't think we needed to overpay for courtney brown anyways. We have wynn and daniels starting and we had some good young defensive ends last year that stepped up and played well when daniels missed most of the season. I think cb's money can be spent at solidifying the cornerback position. We had a top 5 defense last year, courtney brown needed us more than we needed him

Following up on my past comments: I don't think Raymer and Brown are adequate backups on the OT. A couple of injuries and no improvement from Dockery will mean we don't have a ground game again this year. Also, Gibbs may be comfortable with QB backups, but I'm not. I can't even conceive of staying sane with Brunell at the helm. I'd rather start McPherson fresh from arena ball and risk getting my pockets picked after the game than hope for a V from Brunell or wild guy.

Champ didn't trash talk Washington. He just talked up Denver.

Why is he a punk? Because he made a decision that he feels is best for himself and his family? You can't fault a person for doing that.

I would much rather have a healthy Philip Daniels than a questionable Courtney Brown.

Totally agree Jake! C'mon people it's time to move on. This is not that big of a deal and we could have had a "project" on our hands.

Time to get on down the road with who we have and can add to the mix in the next few weeks.

We still have a few areas of concern but the outlook for our team is much improved over where we were last year. We also have to hope/think that we are going to get some pretty big upgrades from a lot of players who could not or did not make any last year.

Sorry about Brown but this could have had a lot more downside than up! Let's get over it and move on.
Until recently, Snyder & Allen have made a lot of really bad decisions - nobody with any sense believes this franchise will get better under their guidance
Snyder's W/L record = 45% (80-96) - Snyder/Allen = 41% (59-84-1)

Not really, our offer was totally based on him actually playing. There was really no downside, other than an injury might have affected team morale.

Whatever, Brown has never shown that he can be as productive as Kearse. We need big time players not big time names.

Robskins, would you feel better if we all just moaned the blues about it ? It's human nature at work here. Call it a "defense mechanism", no pun intended. Same with Champ and every-darn-body else we tried to get/keep, but couldn't. Once you go someplace else, you're the enemy.

Free agent DE picks Denver over three teamsBy Len Pasquarelli, ESPN.com
Len Pasquarelli Archive

Free agent defensive end Courtney Brown, sought avidly by four teams despite a career marred by injuries and a glaring lack of production, has reached a contract agreement in principle with the Denver Broncos.

Financial details of the one-year deal with options to increase to increase it to five, which is expected to be signed later this week, were not immediately available.

BrownReleased by the Cleveland Browns on March 14, the five-year veteran chose the Broncos' offer over proposals from Washington, Jacksonville and Seattle. The Browns had also indicated an interest in re-signing the former Penn State star to a deal more palatable than the $8 million he was owed under his original contract. That included a roster bonus of $2.5 million and base salary of $5.5 million for 2005.

It is believed Brown's decision came down to Denver and Washington. All of the contract proposals were reportedly in the same financial range, and laden with incentives, with the Broncos perhaps gaining a modest edge with a slightly superior bonus package.

Brown's agent, Marvin Demoff told the Gazette of Colorado Springs: "I think (Denver) had everything he was looking for. If he had a list of 10 things, they hit on all 10."

With the Broncos, who had put their pursuit of other free agent defensive linemen on hold while they awaited Brown's decision, he will be reunited with Andre Patterson, his position coach in Cleveland the past two seasons. Patterson has been very outspoken in his support of Brown, and publicly defended him against detractors who have pointed out the poor numbers he has posted in a star-crossed NFL tenure.

Denver will incorporate some 3-4 fronts into its defense this season and feels that Brown has the hybrid-type skills to be productive in that scheme.

But in five seasons, Brown has only 17 sacks and has never demonstrated the kind of upfield explosiveness Cleveland saw in him when it made him the first overall choice in the 2000 draft. Cleveland paid him approximately $27 million for five years and Brown missed 33 games with knee, ankle, neck, biceps and foot injuries.

Brown, 27, finished each of the last four seasons on injured reserve. He continues to rehabilitate from what is known as a Lis Franc sprain to his left foot, an injury from which only a few players have recovered and enjoyed productive careers.

Like the other teams with which he visited, the Broncos believe Brown will fully recover from the foot injury that limited him to just two games last season and perhaps reach the kind of productivity that has eluded him to this point in his career.

The Broncos lost their top pass-rusher, Reggie Hayward, to the Jacksonville Jaguars as an unrestricted free agent earlier this month. Denver has auditioned a number of defensive linemen and, in addition to Brown, demonstrated interest in end Marques Douglas of Baltimore, and tackles Ed Jasper of Atlanta and Cincinnati's Tony Williams. Even with the acquisition of Brown, the Broncos will almost certainly sign at least one more veteran defensive lineman.

   What a waste of a trip to Cleveland and dinner with a guy who only sees green.

Even though he went for the cash instead of the team, I wish him the best. What else can we do? Can't kill him! He probably made the best decision because he might not be able to get that type of money in the future.

Browns | Droughns Acquired - from www.KFFL.com
Wed, 30 Mar 2005 13:14:42 -0800

The Cleveland Browns have acquired RB Reuben Droughns from the Denver Broncos in exchange for DE Ebenezer Ekuban and DT Michael Myers.

Broncos | Brown Officially Signed - from www.KFFL.com
Wed, 30 Mar 2005 19:12:07 -0800

The Denver Broncos have officially announced the signing of free agent DE Courtney Brown (Browns). Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

This is why he went to denver. Denver probably told he they were trying to get Ekuban and Myers in a trade. Then when the trade goes trough the Brown deal is official. Kinda weird.

Defensive line woes continue for BroncosBy Len Pasquarelli, ESPN.com
Len Pasquarelli Archive

Courtney Brown. Gerard Warren. Michael Myers. Ebenezer Ekuban.

Not exactly a quartet, despite the presence of three former first-round choices, including two of whom were among the top three players selected in their respective draft classes, sufficiently menacing enough to cause restless nights for offensive linemen leaguewide.

This isn't a group that should be mistaken for the Fearsome Foursome, the Steel Curtain, the Purple People Eaters, or any other colorfully captioned front-four unit. Heck, these guys, The Four Flops, have authored fewer hits than the Four Tops. In fact, looking for a handle for this frustrating foursome? How about The Rejects or the Retreads?

Or, given that all four of the veteran defensive linemen labored for Cleveland in 2004, perhaps the Brown-outs is most appropriate.

Last season, the quartet averaged 22.5 tackles, 3.3 sacks and 8.3 starts. Yeah, you can justifiably point out those microscopic numbers are skewed downward by the fact Brown was injured and played in only two games. But, hey, Brown, the first player chosen in the 2000 draft, is always injured. It will probably cost Cleveland ownership more to ship his ponderous medical dossier to Denver than it will to forward his equipment. The guy clearly has more X-rays than big plays.

Here's a more ominous statistic: The four linemen have averaged 19.5 games missed to injuries over the course of their NFL careers and more than two surgeries apiece. None has ever registered more than eight sacks in a season. Neither Brown nor Ekuban, both rehabilitating from surgeries, will be able to run full-speed before May. So dubious is the availability of Ekuban for the outset of training camp that Cleveland tossed Myers into a trade earlier this week as a cheap insurance policy.

Want a less than ringing endorsement? With all four linemen on their roster in 2004, the Browns won, yep, all of four games. Cleveland management might have fared better had it simply erected four speed bumps.

None of this dissuaded the Broncos from finding a way to bring all four to Denver.

The Broncos recruited Brown, released by Cleveland on March 14 for cap and casualty reasons, as if he was the second coming of Bruce Smith. Which is precisely what a lot of scouts felt he would be when he departed Penn State in 2000. And before the defensive end began accumulating enough ailments to be held personally accountable for the spiral in medical insurance costs in Ohio during his five-year tenure near Lake Erie.

So the Broncos signed Brown in hopes of resurrecting his flagging career. Three weeks ago, Denver traded a fourth-round pick for Warren, the third overall selection in the '01 draft, and an interior defender possessed of enormous talent, but whose accomplishments are sparse. Warren is one of our favorite players in the league but "Big Money" has been more a penny stock for four seasons. On Tuesday night, the Broncos shipped disgruntled running back Reuben Droughns to the Browns in exchange for Ekuban and Myers.

It's as if the Broncos' football operation has given new connotation to the high component of the Mile High City. Do they suddenly feel that Brown, who finished each of the last four seasons on injured reserve, is going to stumble upon some panacea while wandering some Rocky Mountain trail? That Warren will find motivation, Ekuban stay healthy and Myers suddenly become a playmaker?
