Greatest Draft Pick of All-Time

What pick would you say goes down as the greatest draft pick of all time.

Please consider:

1. The Round the player was drafted in.
2. How successful the player was in relation to where he was drafted.

Charles Mann taken in the third round the same year that we took Darrell Green.

Dexter Manley in the 4th round.

Clint Didier in the 12th round!

Tough call!

If it's the Skins only then Yeah I go with Mann, other wise my choice is Terrel Davis, from the 6th round to Suberbowl MVP and back to back champ. Oh yeah 2000yd season.

If you're speaking out of the entire NFL... it's Tom Brady... hands down... leading ones team to 3 SB Wins in their first 5 years... being a 6th round pick, late in the round... nobody can compete with that...

I almost mentioned TD too.... but then I remembered he had Elway helping him.... Brady had diddly squat... atleast through the first two SB...

Off the top of my head I'd say Darrell Green.
He was called "too small" by most of the teams and he ended up playing 20 years and contributed to the community (what more could you ask for?) ...that is a GREAT draft pick.

Joe Montana is up there....so are a bunch of others gems.

A more interesting thread would be "Greatest Undrafted Free Agent Rookie of All-Time"

Wow, it didn't even cross my mind that he would be talking about league wide draft picks. I just assumed that we were talking about the Skins. But if it is league wide then yeah I have to go Brady too!

Hmmm, I would have to say Brady or Davis. Yeah Davis had Elway, but I don't care how good your QB is, rushing for 2000yds in a season is incredible.
As for undrafted, I don't know a whole bunch of the top of my head, but Priest Holmes would be near the top of that list. Maybe if Patten has a good season he could jump up there.

I was watching NFL classics, and there were a lot of great players who were drafted in like round 12 back when the draft was very long...those might come to mind too...all your choices are good.

Monte Coleman - 11th round - '79
Chris Hanburger - 18th round - '65

ey. Taking him in the 3rd round, when a lot of teams probably didn't even know who he was, not just did the Skins make a wise choise as of now, and I hope continues to prove that way, but they took a chance on this guy as well... but as of now, league wide, I too would have to say Brady, b/c most scouts said he would be a backup at best in the NFL, and now he is 3-time Super Bowl champ...

Unless I'm badly mistaken, Johnny Unitas is the greatest undrafted player of all time, hands down. I think he was a walk on from sandlot ball.

Greatest Redskin draft pick was Larry Brown I think he was an 8th rd pick. The greatest draft pick ever was David "Deacon" Jones, HOF taken somewhere in the teens (17th rd?) by the Rams. He did finish his career with the Skin's. The greatest undrafted Redskin has to be Jacoby.

I can't believe there's not more support here for Darell Green! When has a team got more than 20 years worth of high level production on the field and in the local community? The guy always put the team ahead of himself... taking a backseat to Deion, tutoring Champ, playing hurt...how many hold outs do you remember?... anybody remember him at 40 years old against Dallas flying up on a sweep to take out 3000 lb lead blocker Larry Allen? If he doesn't return that punt against Chicago, we don't win a Super Bowl; If he doesn't bat that ball away against Minnesota, we don't win a Super Bowl... what team ever got more for less over a longer period of time???

Earnest Byner 10th Round pick in the 1984 Draft. I remember reading that the 1984 draft is considered to be the least talented group ever. The Hall of Fame has not yet enshrined anyone from the 1984 NFL Draft.

Best Skins "draft pick" ever wasn't even drafted. "Big Jake", Joe Jacoby is right up there all time across the NFL, but I'm with crazyhorse, Jonny U was the best "value" ever drafted or not drafted.

The skins pick by rounds:
1ST - this is close; Monk, Charlie Taylor, or Green are all a toss up (Green was a best value), but the best all time was Sammy Baugh (I'm biased by the way)
2ND - Paul Krause hands down (honorable mention Bill Brundige)
3RD - Russ Grimm (honorable mention Charles Mann)
4TH - Don Warren (honorable mention Vince Promuto)
5TH - Brian Mitchell (honorable mention Dexter Manley)
6TH - Mark Rypien (honorable mention Harold McClinton)
7TH - Gus Frerotte (we havn't had much luck in the 7th round)
8TH - Larry Brown (honorable mention Wayne Millner)
9TH - Len Hauss
10TH - Eddie LaBaron (honorable mention Stinky)
11TH - Monte Coleman (honorable mention George Starke and Raleigh McKenzie)
18th - Chris Hanburger

I was planning on stopping at the tenth but I couldn't leave off Monte or Chris. If you have no idea who some of these guys are, maybe you should.

Before anyone gets technical on me I know that Steve Young was the #1 pick in the Supplemental Draft by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 1984 and he is now in the Hall of Fame.
