how? they chose to let those players go. if they wanted to keep them, they could've given them more money than the other team. it's not as if they were "stolen" with no opportunity to retain them. if they didn't have the money, it was because of the salary cap. so a team should be rewarded for using up all its cap space?
the whole issue of compensatory picks seems pretty ridiculous. why does a team that had a GOOD player get rewarded for letting him walk away, whereas a team that CUTS a player who underperforms gets nothing. doesn't the team that never benefitted from the good player need more help?
the two teams that made the superbowl are getting 3 and 4 extra picks each in the draft because they let players go before the season. obvioiusly it didn't hurt their teams to do so! there are a hundred things about this that are contrary to common sense. cvillehog suggested to me that it was probably something put in the original CBA that first had free agency, in order to sell it to the owners-- "don't worry, if you lose a good player, we'll make it up to you, we'll give you a draft pick!" well, free agency has been here a while and all the owners have bought into it, so here's hoping this absurd policy is abolished in the new CBA they're working on now.

Think of it this way. Coach Gibbs is using the Pats as his basis of operation. That means in a few seasons we will be benefiting from this rule. Let's not abolish it quite yet.

i'm sure it's a rule based on parity. if you lose good players because you can't afford to pay them, you get reimbursed for your loss, so your team won't be at the bottom of the league, theoretically.

As a result of the compensation picks in the third round, the Redskins' picks in the fourth, sixth and seventh rounds have been adjusted:
The fourth-round selection drops to the 112th overall (11th pick in the round)
The sixth-round selection drops to the 183rd overall (9th pick in the round)
The seventh-round selection drops to the 222nd overall (8th pick in th round)
The number of picks a team receives and the rounds they come in are based on a formula that takes into account salary, playing time and postseason honors by players they lost. The maximum any one team can get is four picks.
That is ridiculous!!!! I am so tight faced right now!!!

The compensatory picks have been award since 1993, and four teams, Dallas (25), Green Bay (22), Philadelphia (21) and Buffalo (20) each have been awarded 20-or-more additional choices over that period of time.
One interesting note about the compensation picks is that over 12-year period of time ('93-'05), the teams who have received the most additional choices, which range from a low of 12 (Minnesota) to a high of 25 (Dallas)... well of the 13 teams who have received the most choices, 10 of them have made at least one Super Bowl appearance during that same period of time, including New England, Dallas, Green Bay, Baltimore, St. Louis who have all won Super Bowls between 1993 and 2005.
A final oddity of this year's compensation picks is that part of the formula that decided the Denver Broncos should receive two additional third round choices came because they lost linebacker IAN GOLD to Tampa Bay, as a free agent... but he has since returned to the Broncos after being released by the Buccaneers... so they now have an extra third round choice and the player who they are being compensated for losing back on their active roster within the same 12-month period of time... there were some who thought they would not get two high selections for losing Bertrand Berry (Arizona) and Ian Gold (Tampa Bay) because another portion of the formula used by the Management Council takes into consideration the size/length of the contract given to the free agent players lost, so since Tampa Bay released Gold after only one season, the actual value of his contract turned out to be much less than originally anticipated when it was signed.

Until recently, Snyder & Allen have made a lot of really bad decisions - nobody with any sense believes this franchise will get better under their guidance
