Redskins Begin Voluntary Workouts
By Brian Hosmer
Special to Redskins.com
March 21, 2005

They're back at it at Redskin Park. On Monday, the Redskins conducted their first day of voluntary offseason workouts at their Ashburn, Va., training facility. The turnout--at about 90 percent-- and the atmosphere was outstanding, said head strength and conditioning coach John "Mother" Dunn.
"We had almost everybody," Dunn said. "Basically, the whole team was here, and the atmosphere was real positive and upbeat."

The Redskins who were not in attendance included those players who are in NFL Europe. Quarterback Tim Hasselbeck was excused because his wife is expecting a baby. Wide receiver Rod Gardner, who has been granted permission to seek a trade, was not expected to attend any of the sessions.

Dunn said one guy who really lit up the weight room on the first day back was running back Clinton Portis.

"We're real excited about seeing Clinton," Dunn added. "He was upbeat about getting started again and in taking a leadership role with his team."

The players were ready to get back into the swing of things. For instance, return specialist/running back Chad Morton, who tore his ACL in the seventh game of the 2004 season against Green Bay, said: "I've been rehabbing in Miami. I'm feeling great, and I'm glad to be back with the rest of my teammates."

Among others on hand was defensive end Demetric Evans, saying, "You can only vacation for so long. You have a job at hand and you have responsibilities. The quicker we can get started here with the program, the better."

Evans hasn't had much time away from football in recent seasons. Since 2002, he has played in Dallas, for the Redskins and in NFL Europe for the Cologne Centurions last spring.

This is a great sign.

Players only play well when they are excited, and I'm pretty sure these guys are excited.

90% is really good, looks like the team is really shaping up to be a team, not just a bunch of guys playing together. Gibbs is already working his magic.

That is really good news. I wonder what the attendance was under the ol' ball coach?

There were never any hard and fast figures...the players knew that he didn't know their names, so they sent fans and nephews and stand-ins.

im really happy to hear that 90% of the team showed up. They play like a team on the field, and they work like a team off the field... and thats how teams win superbowls.

I'm glad to hear that CPortis is in town. He was in Bermuda....Australia.....and now when his team needs him, he's in Ashburn! That's nice...maybe I was wrong about him. Maybe he'll stick with us for a while. :)

Given that his coaching staff asked guys, "What are you doing here?" after losses, I would suspect the training facility wasn't wall-to-wall with people at this point.

I guess Portis has been working out while on vacation. That is is a sign of dedication. It only takes two weeks to lose the muscle that was gained over two months. That is why you need to stay in shape not get back in shape.

This is nothing but good news. I think I'm more excited about next season than I was about Gibbs coming back in the first place. One year on, and the players really seem to have got the message about what Gibbs is looking for in his Redskins. :)
