June 1rst cuts

Post by John Manfreda »

How do you all think will be cut after June 1 to make room for Santan's new contract.
I think it will be Chad Morton and I think two or three other people but not sure who. Could be Phillip Daneils or Micheal Barrow if he has a bad mini camp.

It will not be Phillip Daniels, we are a better team with him on the field.

You heard it here first...to many people on this board throw that line around like it's part of their signature.

Here's one for you: SF will win the Super Bowl this year and NE will go 0-16, YOU HEARD IT HERE FIRST.

Come on :? If your right you'll be the first to bring it up, but if your wrong no one will remember and I'm sure you won't bring it up either.

This, I heard it here first.

back on topic:
Cutting Morton after June first would only free up $40K it would be better to bring him into camp and let him compete

I thought $40K too, but I was wrong. After June 1 cutting him would save us $540K and before June 1 it would cost us (and not save) an addition $460K to cut him. He is cap impact this year is $1.04M. If you cut him post 6/1 you save that money minus this years portion of his remaining prorated signing bonous which is %500K and the other $1M would be dead money on the 06 cap. Before 6/1 it would be $1.04M - $1.5M = - $460K (a cap hit and not a savings).
Now the question for Gibbs and company is, "Is Morton worth a roster spot", because cutting after 6/1 saves the team almost nothing. You also have to remember that you don't even save the full $540K because a roster spot will suck up most of that, so the savings is more a next year thing.

Let Morton compete in camp. He's done very little for us so far, but the guy's got enough talent to wait and see if he bounces back. Antonio Brown is no guarantee for punt returns at this time, and I'm not sure that Gibbs will want to stick Moss back there if he's going to be a starting wideout.

So, Morton is decent insurance for now, unless he doesn't perform in camp. In which case, cut him loose - I'd rather see his spot taken by a tight end or h-back.

I think Morton is a talented guy. He's talented returner and a potential 3rd down back. I'd have a hard time believing he's not worth a roster spot.

You heard it somewhere else third!

If Morton makes the team it will have to be at RB, We have to many option (Thrash,Moss,Brown) to keep him just as a PR/KR

So we should cut Morton to save a roster spot to sign another guy with the pittance of 540k that we saved? And this is for next year? Where we'd have 1 million in cap money to NOT have a player... how on earth would this help next year? Next season is different... he gets 2.3M instead of 1.04M... but until then, I just see him as a very well priced utility guy. I'm not sure where else you'll find a guy that can return punts, return kicks, and be a third down back for a million bucks. he's a possibility obviously, because with Moss and Antonio Brown, we have two guys that can return kicks. But if all you are going to save is a little $$$$, you can save half that by cutting Brown and pay nothing for it next year.

I just don't understand these people that wanna toss Morton for getting hurt last year.... i guess I am one of the only ones that remembers how good he was in 2003 WHEN NOBODY WAS PLAYING WELL. Yeah, the guy got hurt last year... that tends to happen in football. But unless we HAD to cut Morton to eke out enough cap room to sign someone exceptional, I really can't see JG cutting him to grab another 540k body when the entire mantra of this Redskins' offseason has been continuity and keeping what we have.

My 2 cents

We can save likely $455k or more to cut Cartwright... if he can't be a fullback or anything more than a 3rd string emergency RB, then to me his roster spot is more expendable than morton's.
Sean Taylor was one of a kind, may he rest in peace.

I agree with you Boss. Cutting him doesn't give us much. The guy is very very quick, he hasn't done much for us in returns but I'd blame that on the blocking. Plus, he seems like a good guy in the locker room.

Remember, a number of our good ST players were either starting on defense and offense due to injuries to our original starters or injured. Hopefully, Danny Smith can get a good unit out there and keep it together...Morton will be fine.

He did really well as a 3rd down back 2 years ago... Soft hands and very good after the catch.

Maybe sign a "cheap" Special Teams guy, or two and KEEP Morton.

Boss,
I can't tell if you're agreeing with me or not. :hmm: Basically everything that you said was the same as what I said.

I've always thought he was pretty worthless, but I dont see the point in cutting him until it will cost us nothing; when his contact runs out i guess.

Its not like hes hurting the team by being here or killing the cap. So let him stay and compete, and we will see how he does.
