Brunell renegotiates

Redskins' Brunell Reworks Contract

By Nunyo Demasio
Washington Post Staff Writer
Thursday, March 10, 2005; Page D03

Quarterback Mark Brunell became the latest Redskins player to restructure his contract, sources said. Brunell -- who started the first nine games last season before being replaced by Patrick Ramsey -- reworked his contract to save Washington about $1 million.
The amount is significant because the Redskins have been in a salary cap quandary since trading wide receiver Laveranues Coles to the New York Jets for wideout Santana Moss.
According to sources, Brunell was told that the Redskins needed the extra money to sign other players because of the trade. Although Washington allowed cornerback Fred Smoot to depart, the organization still lacks flexibility to sign its remaining unsigned players plus draft picks. Also, Coach Joe Gibbs said yesterday that Washington would consider signing a released player.

Last year, Brunell signed a seven-year, $34 million contract, which included an $8.6 million bonus. Brunell was scheduled to make about $2 million this season -- a $500,000 roster bonus due this month, plus $1.5 million in base salary. Sources with knowledge of the details said that Brunell agreed to reduce his roster bonus to $235,000 and will earn $765,000, the NFL's minimum salary for an 11th-year veteran. Brunell could make up for the difference through incentives, which don't count against the cap.

The incentives for Brunell include team improvement in one of eight offensive categories. Because Washington was the 30th-ranked offense in the 32-team NFL, Brunell will almost certainly earn the incentive.

Before restructuring, Brunell's cap hit for 2005 would have been $3.5 million.

Note: Safety Sean Taylor is scheduled to appear in circuit court today regarding his appeal for a conviction of failing to take a blood alcohol test. Taylor's DWI charge stemming from an Oct. 28 traffic stop on the Beltway was already dismissed. Refusal to be tested carries a mandatory one-year suspension of his license.

On Brunell, thank you. You will be paid relativly well for being a Mentor. As for Sean Taylor...Know when to say When Brother. With that Signing bonus you got.....get a cab.....DC is expensive but with only 1 passenger...it cant be that much...

I think that he saw his game tapes in the offseason and understood that he would be a hated guy in DC if he didnt. He brought nothing to the table. Atleast he can say he helped the team this year. I just hope he works with Ramsey to help him. He needs it.

Great news about Brunell. And by the way it was Sean Taylor not Springs who had the DUI charges.

I was surprised to hear this. He didn't do much for us last season, but it shows he's not "money hungry" like some of the other players in the NFL.

I wonder if the incentives make up for the loss of a cool mil. After reading the article, it appears that there are some "easily reached" incentives tied to "team improvement" on the offensive side.
I'm not saying that this isn't a nice gesture...I'm just saying he didn't really lose anything. After all, he doesn't have to play a down of football for the "team improvement", offensively.
In fact, we improve offensively in a big way by benching him.

Yes, Snyder is quite a businessman. And football IS a business. Snyder is great at making money in business. Even the football business. Now may I be greedy and ask what his monitary profits do for me?

Signing Brunell was probably the worst move of last off season and its bothered me ever since with the cap ramifications BUT thanks Brunell for being a team guy. Its probably the least he could do but thanks anyway.

Well, he is playing for the veteran minimum this year. I guess he's starting to realize that he's not going to be our man anytime soon.

Man, I was talking about this a week ago! That's official - Brunell reads thehogs.net forum. That was only part one of my post - now he must apologize to every Redskin Fan and apply at Best Buy.

And Dude, I don't hope you die :0)

Actually that little ditty is <tm>Hill 66

Just thought the brother should get his props, cause it is still funny.

Kudos to Mark for re-doing his deal to help out the cap though, little more room to wiggle.
Sean Taylor was one of a kind, may he rest in peace.

 That was the second thought that came to my head. The first was "Brunell restructured???? How much???" Boy was I disappointed. Only $1 mil off a $43 million contract. Yippee. Oh well. At least it's better than nothing.
