Maybe we didn't. Oh well I guess. Rolle and Springs will be just as good.

I'll tell you what we didn't get from the entire Smoot-to-Vikings event: dead cap space.

Or, to put it in the positive, we received the priviledge of not having to cut checks for a player not on our roster this upcoming year. :)

No, I'm talking Antre. But Pac-man Jones is ok too if we can't get Rolle.

We saved money by not OVER PAYING a CB who's not able to cover a #1 WR through the course of an entire game.

He wanted #1 money, but he's a #2. Too bad.

No compensation for Smoot, except for the fact that we didn't overpay for a player.
I like Smoot. I thought his tackling skills improved 1000 fold last year whivh made me like him more. But it would have been a mistake to sign him.
CBs have less value with the chuck rule. They can't get physical with receivers like they used to, and this has been mentioned on this board and othewrs hundreds of times.
All we need is someone to be effective in CB position, not a superstar. We will have Sean Taylor and Matt Bowen unloading on receivers next year. In my opinion, Lito Sheppard and Sheldon Brown are effective CBs for the Eagles (although probowl voters disagree with me). What makes thenm special are their supporting cast: a great D line, average linebackers, and one of the best safty pairs in football in Dawkins and Lewis to go with a great coordinator.
I woould rather see the team shore up the D line with depth than focus on the corners.

How confusing was it for the Eagles offensive line in the Super Bowl when they couldn't tell if someone was lined up at DE or linebacker? They had a hard time figuring what the blocking assignments were and we saw D Mcnabb pressured for one of the few times in the year.
Anyone excited about how GW is going to use Lavar next year?
Marvin Lewis liked to line him up at DE. My guess is GW will move him around as well.
Williams will adapt the defense to its strengths.

The team addressed the most crucial need this offseason. A center. I fully expect Raymer and Freidman to make the roster next year for added depth on the line. Hopefully the draft will add depth as well.
It would have been a mistake to re-sign Smoot, no matter how much I liked him.

4 years of good memories.

Smoooooooot.

Minny overpaid... we weren't willing or able to.
Sean Taylor was one of a kind, may he rest in peace.

Well, balanced against Rabach and Patten, the losses of Pierce and Smoot could get us maybe a 6th round draft pick in compensation.

On the bright side, the Eagles planned ahead, drafted two very good CBs, signed them for a relative long-term bargain, then get the 4th round compensation (I estimate) for losing over-the-hill Taylor and Vincent.

One organization referenced above is well-run the other is the one I root for.

You don't get compensated for not re-signing an unrestricted free agent.

If you tender a restricted free agent, but he signs with another team, then they must give you a draft pick from the round in which the player you lost was drafted.

You don't get a draft pick as compensation for not re-signing a guy.

We could of or should I say should have saved the money by NOT signing Patton and resigned Smoot. Now we have a need for a quality CB with not much left on the open market. So now we might have to use our 9th pick for a DB instead of a WR or DE or even MLB.

Would you like Coles and Williams/Edwards at WR with Smoot and Springs at DB and little cap room or...

Moss and Patton at WR and Antrel or Pac-Man at one corner with Springs ???? and no cap room.

Teams do get compensatory picks based on the net loss/gain of FAs(the exact formula has never been made public) the previous off-season.

The second one...because that's what we have. Get used to it. We also do not know that they will draft a CB with the 1st. I do not believe that Williams/Edwards will be there at #9 anyway...
