Which receivers need to go?

Post by skinsfaninroanoke »

I think we can count on several being shoe ins:

Laverneus Coles
Taylor Jacobs
Rod Gardener
Patrick Johnson

but we have six more competing for the spot. Who would you cut first?

Coles, Gardner, Jacobs and RUSSELL are all shoe-ins.

For the first 10 days of camp, Russell was amazing... I can't speak for after that. But considering we run the Fun 'N Gun and Russell was THE FASTEST player drafted last year... he seems a natural fit.

I think D. McCants and P. Johnson take the other two spots (giving us 6 WR roster spots), with Cloman ending up on the pracice squad. I still think we have to keep Cloman or McCants JUST IN CASE Gardner were to get hurt and miss any substantial action. I'd rather it was Darnerian for two reasons: 1) he has an extra year of NFL experience and 2) he's less likely to be p-lucked from the PS than Cloman is. Both of these two bigger bodies seem better suited to filling Gardner's role in the offense which will be a lot of underneath stuff while Coles is stretching out the D.

I loved Richmond Flowers when I was at camp, but there just doesn't seem to be a spot for him. He can't be on the PS again, and I just don't think he's quite there yet. Which is a shame because he has good hands and a great attitude.

Dillard and Woodcock have played well too, but just seem to be the next tier down... and they're quite small. I will say that I NEVER saw Dillard drop a single ST kick and I wouldn't be surprised to see him land a job in the NFL somewhere on special teams.
Sean Taylor was one of a kind, may he rest in peace.

Not to mention that Dillard seemed to never drop a pass either. MY wife was constantly commenting on the air he seemed to get beneath his feet going up for a ball and he always seemed to come down with it.

Seems a shame to see him or Cloman go.

I would hate to see Flowers get cut after that massive diving catch he made in the later part of the Patsies game - spectacular.

McCants may have a pulled hamstring - but I can't say that I believed too much in it when I saw him sprint full speed past the fans wanting autographs after one practice - full speed in cleats on gravel.

So nobody thinks they'll cut Patrick Johnson as a sign that muffed punts (and by extension, other mental errors) won't be tolerated?

Cliff Russell and Darnerien McCants will make the team. No question about it.

I think they should cut Patrick Johnson first. That'd send the right signal to the team that the coaches are serious about discipline and getting it done.

Other than Coles, Gardner and Jacobs, I think they should keep Cliff Russell and Darnerien McCants. Russell is a good backup for Coles/Jacobs and McCants is a good backup for Gardner. If they have six WRs (a good possibility), Flowers would be the guy. Colman most likely goes to the practice squad.

I agree that Johnson should be cut first. That drop in the end zone was too much for me to handle.

I would have no problem cutting P. Johnson.

A little anecdote from training camp...

Jake asked him if he was happy to be a Redskin and he had a really poor answer.

He basically said that he;d have to wait and see... he won a super bowl with the Bucs. I can understand him FEELING that way, I just wasn't too excited that he voiced it to the fans.

Remember that Jake?

Then you said that he'd have to sign a contract extension because we probably wouldn't win the SB this year and he went off on some tangent about how you could win it with tons of new guys like they did in T-Bay... blah, blah, blah!

It honestly sounded like he was about a fraction of a second from saying.... no I'm not happy that I came to Washington.. I wish I'd stayed in Tampa.

We brought him in for his speed and I think Cliff Russell's emergence has lessened that need. I would have no problem keeping Coles, Gardner, Jacobs, Russell, McCants and either Cloman or Flowers (if we keep 6). Flowers can'yt go to the PS, so i don't know if that'' hurt Cloman's chances any -- he can go to the practice squad.

Hey Mark,
He won it with Baltimore in January 2001, he was in Jacksonville last year. It's okay, everyone has brain farts. Saturday's game probably drained a lot out of you. LOL. He is a nice guy but is way too optimistic for this team, I'll have to agree with you on that. My mom jinxed him, so she's not coming to anymore games this year. Just Kidding. LOL! Go Skins!!!! Two more question, Mark... Do you get Redskins games in Canada and if so, how?

I know who we should go after this offseason. Warren Sapp!!! Save money on DT's this year by releasing a couple veterans like Haley or Holsey and go after big 99! Good idea, but we need the money to do it.

The only problem with cutting Patrick Johnson is he dropped one in the end zone, Once But I feel you if he does it next game

Yeah Baltimore... t-Bay... whatever it was.

The point is his attitude sucked I thought.

The only problem with cutting Patrick Johnson is he dropped one in the end zone, Once

Actually that has nothing to do with my willingness to part ways with him. He was brought in to give us some speed when Cliff Russell had yet to prove himself. While Russell hasn't proven anything in a regular season game yet, he was very impressive at camp. With Coles, Russell and Jacobs already for speedsters... and Gardner, and McCants slightly 'bigger possession type' receivers.... we don't neccessarily need the speed out of the 6th WR spot.

Not to mention that P. Johnson will cost $680K this year compared to $225K for Cloman or Flowers. We would have to pay Johnson a $150K signing bonus irregardless, but that's still a cap savings of $305,000 to go with either of the other two. All 3 of them have been getting reps with special teams and that may be what it comes down to.

That is a good point about the special teams but Johnson has indeed dropped too many passes for a veteran. Cloman, I would keep on the practice squad. He's a little raw and Flowers made a couple of good catches but may not be really good in regular season game situations, although I do like him.

Johnson's claim to fame was that he was second in the kickoff and punting rotation. Everyone is worried that people will kick away from Chad. While this is a concern, Johnson's drop of the punt (or kickoff, I forget now) probably did lots more to doom his chances to make this team than his drop in the end zone (which also sucked).

I really hope they drop like 4 receivers in the next week. We obviously aren't keeping all these, and it would be better to get the main ones more reps. Cloman seems big enough to help on special teams, but if he makes it, I think this hurts McCants' chance, as both are big, slower Rod Gardner type WRs. Flowers did not impress me there.

Sean Dillard had to horrid drops the last week of camp, but made some good catches as well. I think he, like Cloman, Flowers, Woodcock and the rest might someday be ok WRs, but are nothing to get excited about.

Spurrier needs to find a No. 2 guy on kickoffs and punts and then dump the rest of the chaff. Its clear that Coles, Gardner and Jacobs are going to make it, and most likely Russell (he didn't do as well the third week but was injured). I would say that leaves one position for either McCants or Cloman, and one for whomever the other kick returner is.

Like I said before, McCants will not be cut and WILL make the roster. Cloman, I don't think will make the active roster but will probably be on our practice squad. The Skins aren't stupid enough to let Darnerien leave.

Darnerian McCants - 2002

Recp: 21
Yds: 256
Lng: 32
TD: 2
Rush: 1
Yds: 9
TD: 0
Fum: 1
Lost: 1

If there is a chance that someone could provide better numbers, if Spurrier is hot to get rid of Betts due to his injury and missed camp, why isn't the same true of McCants? None of his numbers are that doggone impressive. I don't think I would miss him if someone who could produce better can be found in the group we have on the roster right now.

I was hoping to find drops in the stats - but I couldn't. I just seem to remember him being a 60/40 catch/drop proposition last year.

According to what I read - he was out for seven games. So doing my complicated mathematics in my head ::grin:: - that means he played in 9 games, averaging just over two catches per game.

Still not a massive production amount.

but hey... it's just my opinion. If they keep him I hope he proves me wrong. This is still our Skins we are talking about so hopefully whatever move helps us win the division and move into the playoffs..... that is the one I hope they make :)

This next game will tell the tale on who will be cut or stays... I think Coleman is on the bubble... Has a great chance of making the first team. Johnson is in the same boat!!

What I would like to know is who seems to be the better blocker out of this group, Cloeman, Johnson or Mc Cants?? That is one of Spurriers biggest concerns with his WR. Blocking could be their ticket in or out because they all have ability to run and catch but who is the best blocker!!!

If I had to guess from what I have read I would go with Coleman he seems to have awesome hands and plays through pain. I just dont see Mc Cants playing through pain IMO maybe I am wrong but thats just a feeling...

Coles, Russell, Jacobs, Gardner, Coleman in the redzone!! OMG... With that combination of speed and size defensive nightmare!!

I have not watched one game or seen one practice so I maybe way out of line.... but thats what we do in preseason!!
