The Redskins have re-signed defensive tackle Joe Salave'a, the team announced on Wednesday. Salave'a was a key contributor to a Redskins defense that finished the season ranked third in the NFL last season.
The 6-3, 295-pound lineman started nine games last season and recorded 30 tackles (22 solo) and two sacks. He logged his best game in Week 10 when he had a career-high 11 tackles.

Salave'a helped the defensive line hold opposing teams to 81.5 rushing yards per game, ranked second in the NFL.

Prior to joining the Redskins, Salave'a spent his previous five seasons playing for the Tennessee Titans (1998-2002) and the San Diego Chargers (2003). During his first three seasons with the Titans, his defensive coordinator was Gregg Williams, currently the Redskins' assistant head coach-defense.

In 2000, Salave'a had his best season, totaling 43 tackles (22 solo) and four sacks for a highly regarded Titans' defense.

Salave'a entered the league in 1998 as a fourth-round (107th overall) draft choice by the Tennessee Titans. A native of American Samoa, Salave'a played his college ball at the University of Arizona, where he was first team All-Pac 10 as a senior. During his college career, he appeared in 44 games and totaled 157 tackles, 21.5 sacks and six forced fumbles.

Salave'a saw significant action on the Redskins' third-ranked defense last season.

Good news....I like how the news is slowly coming out instead of a big burst (no pun intended Lenny).

Just waiting for the Pierce/Smoot story.

He had a great season and I'm glad to see him come back.

Another fiscally responsible decision.
Sean Taylor was one of a kind, may he rest in peace.

Awesome. I'm very glad to see him return. More important is that he WANTED to return. Those are the type of players this franchise needs more of.

is there any one else on D that we need to sign besides Pierce ans Smoot? If not i think we can have another top 3 defense if not the no. 1!

Not quite...Salave'a is a great back up but is not as good as Griffen. We need another tackle that is as good or better than Griffen.

The Samuels contract AND the fact that Coles is staying means we have a lot more room to sign players.

Good to hear. Big Joe played his heart out last season after being out of ball for a year or so.

Sure we have more space, but we have bigger needs than DT now. When I said we are set, I didn't mean we can't improve. I ment that we can go with what we have. Its time to figure out WR, CB, DE, TE, MLB, and SS I think. THose are all bigger needs.

This is a great move. These are the types of players we have let go in the past (i.e. Carl Powell)

I'm real happy to see this deal get done.

One of the reasons we did as well as we did last year was because of the even push that our tackles got together.

I think the D-line proved last year that we don't. Someone better than Griffin? Are you thinking a Kris Jenkins, or Kevin Williams. I don't think there were very many DTs better than Griffin last year. There certainly are not any DTs better than Griffin avalible by FA.

I am very, very impressed with the moves made thus far.
I'm equally impressed with the moves we didn't make.
It'll be nice to hand over the off-season championship belt to a new winner.

Here are 3....Carter, Ferguson, Williams

Kevin Carter - Going back to the Titans also a big salary guy.
Jason Ferguson - Open to debate on if he is better than Griffin. He certainly won't be cheap.
? Williams - I don't know who this is.

Didn't say better...equal or better (aka full time starter)

Williams - Pat Williams - Buffalo (there is a thread about him).

Another DTackle "Williams" is Cinci's Tony Williams

A good "depth" guy would be Chris Hovan

Your point is noted. I just don't see the need to sign a big money DT. Enemys only averaged 81yds/gm rushing last year with our "no names". Hovan would be a good addition if he could be signed on the cheap. I say give the money to Smoot and or Antonio instead.

I live Salavea. He has a fire in his belly and gets the d-line pumped up. He's a core guy also.
