Giants release four, clear cap spaceNeil Best
February 23, 2005
The Giants yesterday shed four veterans not in their plans for 2005, in the process realizing a net salary-cap savings of more than $1 million.
On the first day teams were allowed to release players, the Giants did so to defensive backs Terry Cousin and Omar Stoutmire and defensive linemen Lorenzo Bromell and Martin Chase. They waived running back Antonio Womack.
Stoutmire, an eight-year veteran safety who was on the Giants' 2000 NFC title team, tore an ACL in the 2004 opener and was lost for the season.
Cousin, a cornerback who filled in at safety last year, struggled on and off the field in his lone season as a Giant; he was not a fan of coach Tom Coughlin. The feeling apparently was mutual.
The Giants are in relatively good cap space one week before the start of the free-agency period and will not be forced to release more players to clear room, but more cuts eventually could be ahead.
Veterans at various positions will be cut in the coming days who could interest the Giants.
