So what happens next year?
If we're having this much trouble with the cap this year, 06 doesn't look good AT ALL. L.C. bailing out. Apparently not enough money to sign Pierce. Smoot gone, Gardner gone, Samuels deal isn't done. When Sean Taylor DOES make the ProBowl next year he'll get paid incentives out the wazoo which will only make the cap situation worse. I'm not liking this at all. I have faith but my expectations for this year are now about as low as they could be. My apologies for hyping Coles, he's obviously not the person I thought he was...
The cap is an ever-growing entity... there are some new contracts coming in 2006 that could up the cap number significantly... some say as high as $100M.
Will it happen? Who knows. one thing i will say that is while we constantly skirt on the edge of cap disaster, we've yet to fall into the abyss. We haven't had any $26M purges like the Titans ae having right now.
We have some guys that count for big dollars in 2006... no doubt about it. But there are a few guys that are a lot more cuttable with an extra year prorated off of their signing bonuses too...
It's a juggling act.
I think Gibbs not only recognizes that... I think it's the reason the current emphasis is on purging bad attitudes and signing character guys. Prima donna attitudes want prima donna contracts.

Sean Taylor was one of a kind, may he rest in peace.

Danny will get it done! Everyone we lose will get replaced & the salary cap increases every year. We'll be OK!

Purging bad attitudes is one thing, purging the talent at a position I think we desparately need is another. Yes, we can plug in pretty much any receiver to catch 5 yd crossing routes and get drilled. But 5 yd hitches, screens, slants etc. didn't work for us last year and they're not going to work this year. Coles doesn't want to play for us, fine... adios. But if he leaves in anyway other than a trade we are screwed in 06. As if we weren't already screwed enough in 06 as it is. Gibbs came to terms with that but Coles could care less. Who are we going to get to replace these guys? We have hardly any money as it is. I'm all about core players but what's so great about core players who probably wont be here next year?
The cap is a juggling act indeed. But these aren't bowling pins they're juggling, they're razor sharp swords.

I think what Boss is pointing out is quite true! We have been in "cap hell" according to "sources" but not to the extent that other teams have found themselves that were not excoriated for fiscal ineptitude as DS & Co. were!
We may be in trouble but I agree with Boss in that it will not be too bad if at all!
That bridge is a looong way down the road and we may never have to cross it.

Until recently, Snyder & Allen have made a lot of really bad decisions - nobody with any sense believes this franchise will get better under their guidance
Snyder's W/L record = 45% (80-96) - Snyder/Allen = 41% (59-84-1)
Snyder's W/L record = 45% (80-96) - Snyder/Allen = 41% (59-84-1)
I really don't think 2 years is a "looooong" way down the road. I'm sure they'll figure it out but... right now, it doesn't look good. If "figuring it out" means 40 new faces on a 53 man roster. Yikes! I hope they boost the cap to 100 mil. That would alleviate some pressure. This offseason has now become just as crucial to 06 as the 06 offseason itself. Which is the case every year with the cap, I know. But it doesn't look good. A lot of new faces we'll all be seeing in 06. So much for these "core" Redskins...
Easy does it, EasyM! All I'm saying is we don't need to get our knickers all twisted just yet! There are obviously going to be some changes and we should let things develop under Joe this season before we worry about next. I think that what is happening is because he has a idea of what he wants for this season and next.
I think the future is now!
Joe and Co. will get things sorted out in a responsible way which is something we have not had here for some time.

There is no doubt in my mind that Joe has a plan. But what can his plan be... realistically? From your standpoint how do things look in 06? After this entire Coles debacle would you keep him on your team?
The Skins will never be a team like the 49ers of this past year. Where there are maybe 2 or 3 top tier players on the entire roster. The Titans are a perfect example of cap mismanagement and I don't think we'll ever see roster cuts that dramatic. I don't know what the numbers are exactly but we're over for next year already. It wouldn't be a problem if the overage was minescule.
Coles, trades, releases and incentives only make 06 worse. Everyone says fix the offense. What is he going to fix it with? Players that didn't impress him last year? Players in FA that we can't afford because we don't have the cap room? Rooks?
So far this offseason is the complete and total opposite of the last offseason. Maybe that's a good thing because we were bad last year. But I saw holes in the team that were directly addressed last year. This year I see holes in the team that CAN'T be addressed. The most crucial re-signing this offseason is A. Pierce. I haven't seen a Redskins MLB make sure people were lined up in the RIGHT PLACE and make the RIGHT READ in forever. If we don't resign Pierce, that's bad. If we can't resign our #1 priority free agent. That's bad. You can't look at that any other way.
The window to sign these guys and figure the rest of it out hasn't closed yet which is a good thing. But it doesn't look good. It doesn't look good this year and it doesn't look good next year. We all want players who want to play for the Redskins, but this is the NFL and it's also America. You can't let good players go because they want to get paid like good players.

I'll say it again - a lot of very knowledgable people forecast doom for us the last 2 years!! It is not good but it certainly is not as bad as teams that those same people thought were not in bad shape cap wise! Seems like we (DS?) are a convenient "target"!!
Now we are not in great shape but all I'm saying is that I think this coach and this FO is going to get things straightened out some and that may be painful, but IMO we will see players who want to be here to play and not just for the money!
Nobody gave our defence a prayer last year and many of us thought, with Joe back, the offense would be back to glory days! Things do not work out as simply in the NFL anymore and am I glad we have Joe and not the groups that are running a lot of the other teams.
I'm enjoying the excitement and the anticipation. I think that we are not very aware of what is really happening behind the scenes and I'm prepared to let Joe keep making the decisions.
As Boss already pointed out - this is a time of great posturing and bluffing by the players, agents and management.
Enjoy the ride! Its a game.

It's nowhere near as bad as others would have you think. As of the end of last season, our projected cap for 06 was 109 million. The projected cap for 06 is $100 million. With the release of Haley, that puts us at 7.587 over. There are quite a few people we can restructure of cut to get under the 100 million.
We still have the ability to sign free agents, just not many premiere ones if any. As long as the bonuses aren't huge and the salary is structured to pay more towards the end of the contract, it won't hurt our cap much for 06. We may be able to get 1 big one this season.
2006 is the only year we have to worry about. Lavar has a overlapping bonuses in that year, and his cap hit is 12.141 million. Nothing we can do about it, so we gotta tweak in other places. Brunell is also another contract that's hurting us. He was given too much bonus money. Again, nothing we can do about it.
The rumor(I can't find it anywhere) is that Jansen and Ramsey restructured their contracts. If that is true, we probably dropped a lot of their hits in 2006. That would be huge because Jansen counts 5.238 against the cap in 2006 and Ramsey counts 1.808. We likely would have reduced their combined number to about 2-3 mil hit in 2006. That would save us 4-5 mil off the 7.587 number. And then there is Samuels who is an 11.320 hit in 2006. I promise that will be at least halved for 2006. He'll be restructured or gone.
It does suck to always be pushing the limit, but these guys are cap masters, and they know what they are doing. Don't worry about it man. Just know that Gibbs doesn't need stars to win. Within a few years, we'll be well under the cap, like the Eagles are, and we be a force in the league again.
The sky is not falling. On the contrary, the sky is the limit with Gibbs back behind the wheel.

Death to the EGO! RIP 21
I know it's a game but that's what makes us Redskins fans, Redskins fans.
Back in the day Gibbs had 53 blank checks. Continuity with players he wanted was easier. Most of them would always come back. I consider myself a huge skins fan and I'm in no way trying to hate on Gibbs in any way, shape or form. But he did have stars. A lot of them. Different than the stars of today, but stars none the less.
There really isn't a good chance of continuity next year and it's looking rough this year. Continuity in the coaching staff is the most important thing. But players the coach himself feels out and wants to keep but can't keep... hurts. He's a professional and I'm sure things will take care of themselves. But it doesn't look good this year with what most of us envisioned as "core Redskins" and next year definitely doesn't look good either. It's a shame he had to walk back on the sidelines and back into the franchise in bad cap shape.
The positive cloud was over all of last years offseason because Gibbs was back. It was also from the aquision of 5 great starters and the drafting of two great starters. I wouldn't expect that from any coach year after year. But Gibbs doesn't even have the opportunity to try. March 2nd will answer a lot of questions but it still doesn't look good.
I'll be a skins fan until the day I die but I'm keeping my expectations low for the next couple of years. I'm hoping that I'm wrong.

EasyM, I feel your pain and understand where the concern is coming from.
I just think that things will be "okay" because we have Joe. I think he has learned a lot in the last year and is going to get us "back" to the top and soon.
I am very glad we have this guy in charge right now as he is a very special person and I have utmost confidence he will find a way.
This is kind of my "birthday" with the hogs.net and I must say the last year here has been very interesting and I thank the Boss and Co. for a great job and all the posters for making this a great site.
Hail to the Redskins and Hail to Hogs.net
