The One(s) That Got Away

Post by hatsOFF2gibbs »

Now that we are pretty sure LColes is gone. What the hell are we going to do?
Smoot and Coles gone? How can you call us a average/good team when two of our elite want out?
How do you expect to go to the play-offs or actually have a winning record?

What's your answer? The Draft? Free Agency? JGibbs? Come on now....we'll start heading downhill if "core redskins"don't want to have anything with a "great" coaching staff. Didn't JGibbs say that JColes was one of those "core" people?
Don't tell me that JGibbs is God and he'll fix everything.

The way we're headed, I wouldn't be surprised to see Portis on the trading block in the future.
----------------------

Getting MWilliams has now become ever-more-important.
Without Williams, Coles, and Smoot, this team is going to be horrible. Even with a genius as a coach!

I just [-o< that Coles will not leave, or else we're totally screwed for next season. 8-8 would be a miracle.

Allright........start your bashing. I am prepared.

Yea I know, I thought JGibbs was still the man. His first mistake was getting the "B" factor. Now, I don't know what else he'll have to go through in order to be the original JGibbs.

(not that I am in any way better than anybody on the coaching staff)

You're making me wonder if it WAS Cass and Beathard who were the difference...

Yeah...the sky isn't coming down but the number of wins certainly is when we are without these guys.

tc.......I couldn't understand what you were trying to say. "WAS Cass and Beathard......"

Must of missed something ...somewhere... somehow.
Last I checked Smoot was a free agent TO BE but not yet under contract to anyone but the Skins, Coles still has 5 years on his contract and a $9M cap figure until June 1

If they don't want to be here do we really want them here?

Smoot will shop his wares (maybe) and see he can get the best deal here

Coles isn't happy with the run based scheme and may want out but if it hurts the team cap wise he won't be going anywhere

If we don't get M.Williams, well I just don't know what we will do. He's never played a down for the Skins but if we don't get him we are doomed. Kinda like USC was doomed this year when he didn't come back after having such a great year before.

It's Febuary 21

Nothing has happen that can't be dealt with prior to the season. Anything can happen at any time. The only thing we know is that Free agency starts in March, the draft is in April and after June 1 more players will hit the market.

It's not right before Traning camp or the beganing of the season. In other words there is no need to push the panic button

Yeah you are right...niksder....but I don't want this to be a factor in our season. If we don't have Coles, what are we to do? JGibbs doesn't want Moss, Muhammad, or Burress! I don't want this to be an excuse for our performance. I don't like excuses...like the one we got after this year.

"Well...this IS his (JGibbs) first year."

Hahahaha HatsOff cracks me up...all year long his negative "wimper" posts. Always talking about the downside.

Cheer up, try looking at the brightside.

Are you holding your blanky?

Go back and read some of your past posts...it's always, "I don't think this" or "I am worried that", or "I don't have a good feeling about this".

too funny!

I don't understand all the pessimism. Look at the facts.

1st and foremost, the Patriots have won 3 out of 4 superbowls. I think it's pretty well undertood by most that the Patriots aren't a team of stars, rather a team of good players who play as a team.

2nd, Joe Gibbs is going to weed out the players who don't fit his system. His system means players who can play within the offense and defense and are Gibbs type character guys.

3rd, Coles was not the player who we signed. He's bitching about not getting downfield, but the fact was that he didn't have the ability to seperate like he used to and Gibbs was training Ramsey to be more disciplined.

4th, Smoot is an above average corner, but not the superstar he thinks he is. He wants too much money, and those days are over in washington. Guys who want to be paid fair and want to get more guys who can help the team win the superbowl are the type of players the redskins will be signing from here on out.

5th, CB in the NFL under the new rules is a very diminished position. The days of shutdown corners are over. Smoot wasn't one anyway, but even if he was, he would have been rendered less effective because of the rules.

6th, We will have a much better pash rush next season as well, which will also diminish our NEED for a great CB.

Final thoughts

Williams is one of, if not THE best Defensive Coordinator in the NFL. He will have this defense playing at an extremely high level regardless of stud players.

Gibbs has orchestrated some of the best offenses the NFL has ever seen, and will do so again, with or without guys like Coles.

90% of the teams that are very good in the NFL have very good offensive lines or defensive lines, or both. It's all about the trenches. Joe will fix the OLine next season, and I suspect the DLine will also be much stronger. He will probably sign a premier receiver to replace Coles and probably upgrade Gardners position as well. If not, then the system will make the starters shine anyway. This team will be much improved over last years team, especially in the win column. Bank on it. Joe Gibbs IS the Savior of this franchise, and he will bring winning ways back around. If you don't know it, then mebbe you should go into a shell until it happens, and then you can come back and pretend you knew it all along like the majority of the rest of us.

Nice post Scottskins, I agree with you, You need total team players who belive in your system. Coles plays hard but his ego makes him expendable. I belive JG will fix the offense, and LC will wish he was with the Redskins next year.

I like the Pats in this example...who has ever heard of David Patten, Troy Brown, David Givens, Deion Branch none of those guys were great receivers on paper before the Pats started their run. I think, as has been said a million times, they play as a collective and they dont put Brady in situations to make mistakes/loose games. The pats example is a good one because it shows you dont need the names to win ballgames...

Scottskins hit the nail on the head.

First, I don't believe that losing Smoot (assuming we do) will hurt us at all. He's a solid player and a good guy but Gregg Williams showed what he's capable of last season. Good coaches can win with anybody. Look at the Pats...they win a Super Bowl with Randall Gay and Asante Samual at CB...a Super Bowl!!! a 7th round pick and an undrafted free agent. Williams is no Bellichek but let's face it, nobody knew who Ron Warner, Salavea'a, Lemar Marshall, etc. were before the season and they all excelled.

As for Coles, I like his game and his willingless to go over the middle and take all Ray Lewis has to offer; you have to respect that. But if the guy wants out, let him go if it's practical for the team.

Plus, it's not as if the skins were anything close to an offensive juggernaut last season. Retooling the WR may not be a bad thing. And while I know consistency and continuity are what I want more than anything, wide receiver is one of the positions that Gibbs wasn't able to address last offseason. He was forced to work with the hand he was dealt rather than his choice of players.

For me the bottom line is this: we've done a tremendous job of bringing in stars the past five offseasons and look where it got us...no where. People act like a great team is being dismantled when the fact is that this is a 5-11, 6-10 team. This isn't a catastrophe, it's progress.

We didn't exactly have a lot of wins with them. If they don't wan to play here, then don't let the door hit them in the arce on the way out....especially for the amount we pay Coles and the amount that Smoot wants. This is just the beginning of the offseason, things will fall into place and we'll find/retain people that want to be here.
The opinion of 10,000 men is of no value if none of them know anything about the subject.

Have I heard of the Patriots?

Have you heard of Brady?

Have you heard of Ramsey?

Have you seen their stats?

PRamsey is good but you cannot compare the two. There's no way you can compare a superbowl MVP to a player who hasn't even made the probowl yet. Of course no name recievers can become stars....they can become stars when your franchise player is your QB. In Washington, there is no way Ramsey is our franchise player.
Of course we can use the Patriots as an example of a "dream" team but in reality we are nowhere close to the Patriots.

I totally agree. We are no were close to Pats and will nit be for amny years. Theres no way the skins will win 3 superbowls in 4 years even though i wish we could.

Except, of course...They can't beat us. They never could. This "Dream Team" of yours chokes when they play the supposedly lowly Redskins.
As far as the schedule goes, nothing else matters. "W" for us.
