Smizzy, come on, you know better then to behave like that.
Coles was worth every penny we paid for him up until this point. If he gives us back part of the signing bonus to help out with the cap situation this is actually a pretty good move for us. Our team has alot of talent and even a slighted Jets fan can't deny that.

I hate to see Coles leave but if he does not want to be with the 'Skins then we have no other choice but to let him go. However there is some bright side to this issue. Now players like McCants and Jacobs will be able to get the playing time they desired (especially McCants) and these two guys did not look that bad when they got playing time last season.

Hail to the Redskins,

I know of a team in good salary cap shape that is looking forward to improve upon a scared receiver dressed in Pink and another whose play is far surpassed by his mouth.
TO -and- LC would make a -PRETTY- powerful combination for any defense to go against...
We better get Williams -and- build a REAL Hogs OL or we may have to face some real uphill battles next season.
As for Givens and others mentioned by Jake, no thanks. If we are not going to really improve on Thrash, Jacobs and Mccants, no thanks.
Gibbs is doing the right thing. But this is going to be more difficult than I ever envisaged. No wonder he said in recent interviews and the radio show that he would look hard at WR in the draft and FA.

The biggest question is who's next??
I knew him going across the middle would take its toll, but never did I anticipate it would be this soon.

I agree. But I would still get a young promising receiver as a backup to our current three.SkinsChic wrote:Now....let's slide Darnerien in one of those spots and see what happens !!

Niki, I like you. I think you're cool.
You're pretty knowledgable about this stuff too.
But to say that Coles was worth every penny, ESPECIALLY when he is about to be released less than 3 years later...is just wrong. I'm dissappointed in you.

How was he not worth every penny. Take Coles out of our offense over the last few years and what do you have?? Not much. We didn't get to the play offs but it gave us fans a few things to be happy about. That was my point. And I said worth every penny if we get a portion of the signing bonus back!
Big difference pal!

Great speed guy though, don't get me wrong. If he were to end up in Dallas, it'd help our deep game a LOT and I'd be a happy camper.(Just theoretically speaking here, people. Please don't bite my head off). But 35 million with a 13 million signing bonus? No way was he worth it.
Don't forget the #1 pick involved either.

Dude... give me a break... in 2002 he had 1200+ yards and 5 TD's, and in 2003 he had 1200+ yards and 6 TD's.... if that wasn't worth a decent pay day.. then you're out of your mind... The FO couldn't predict that the guy would hurt his toe and never be 100% again, before signing a contract...
We might have a stroke of bad luck... but knock off the "salt in wound" act.... It wasn't the FO fault... it's just bad luck...

Even if Coles were still a Skin, I don't think it's such a great tradeoff.

Coles is just upset about the offense. He's never been in such a slump, he played at Florida St. Also, he's got this toe problem that he refuses to get operated on b/c he's scared. The other thing is that he's only going to pay part of his 13mil signing bonus. If we were to trade him, we would take a 9mil hit against the cap. Coles' best bet would be to stay in Washington. Ramsey's developed a good report with him and this gives him the best opportunity. I think he's throwing away opportunity.

But 'Skins aim to trade Coles before release
After having two extensive conservations with Washington Redskins coach Joe Gibbs, receiver Laveranues Coles will be released, sources told The Washington Post.

Wide Receiver
2004 SEASON STATISTICS
Rec Yds TD Avg Long YAC
90 950 1 10.6 45 341
The paper reports Gibbs, owner Daniel Snyder and Coles agent Roosevelt Barnes met Sunday, reaching an oral agreement to make the 27-year-old receiver an unrestricted free agent.
Should Coles be released, one source told the Post, he would return part of his $13 million signing bonus to minimize salary cap ramifications.
Sources close to Coles told ESPN.com on Monday morning, however, that the Redskins were "trying to back off" their agreement to release the wide receiver and that they were tryng to trade him before making such a drastic move. A trade would be difficult, though, since the Redskins would absorb a salary cap hit in excess of $9 million.
"They can't have it both ways," said one source. "If he's going to repay part of [his signing bonus], it's because he can be a free agent, and choose where he continues his career, not to have them trade him. Honestly, it's a mess right now."
Gibbs has admitted to meeting with Coles twice but was vague as to what they discussed.
"We had a couple of good talks. That's the only statement I want to make," Gibbs told the paper last week. "Me and Laveranues talked, and we have a good understanding."
Despite catching a career-high 90 passes last season, Coles was frustrated with the offense and the lack of a deep-passing game.
Gibbs, who also serves as team president, intends to accommodate Coles's request instead of keeping a player who prefers to be elsewhere, two other sources who requested anonymity told the paper.
The Redskins signed Coles to a seven-year, $35 million deal as a restricted free agent from the New York Jets. At the time, the $13 million signing bonus was the richest in Redskins history, forcing the Jets to settle for Washington's first-round pick (No. 13 overall) instead of matching it.

I guess we can go with that.BossHog wrote:Actually... i don't know how anyone can say we paid him like an elite receiver until you see what the buyout is.
Because we certainly paid a pittance for his annual salaries (535k last year +1.8M for his signing bonus pro-ration)
In fact, the more I think about it, the more sense it makes.
They're asking him to give back 9 Mil, correct?

Well there's really no telling how well he could have been because he hurt his toe.... had he not... he could have been a star in Gibbs' system and he could have failed miserably... but we'll never know...
as far as giving up a first for him... we desperately needed a reciever that offseason and they're was nothing in the 1rst round of that draft except for Rodgers, and Andre Johnson.... and every body new they were gonna be taken within the first three picks... The only other WR to go in the first was Bryant Johnson (whooptie doo..) ... and Taylor Jacobs who we originally thought about targeting in the first we landed in the second... so I don't see how that 1rst went to waste...

I'm sure they won't be that fortunate, but yes, it seems to make more sense than just eating the 9 mil to land a draft pick you probably won't be able to afford.
If they get away with anything less than 2 or 3 million, then they will not have made out too badly. they will have paid about 4.5 million + whatever they shell out in the buyout. If you say 2 million, then it'd be 6.5M for 2 years service, or 3.25M per... certainly a fair price for a 90 rceptions, 1000+ yard a year receiver.
Sean Taylor was one of a kind, may he rest in peace.

This works for me, but like I said, I don't believe in giving up #1's anymore unless you're in the 20's.

I just hope if we do release him, that we do a fair deal that it doesn't kill our salary cap.
I still want to have enough money to go out and get a Buress, Porter or Mason. If we can land one of these guys then it won't hurt loosing Coles.
I'd like to see him get traded, for a first round pick, but I guess that would kill out salary cap. Man what a mess.

How can we afford to let Coles go?
How would we replace 2 starting wideouts in one season and still compete in 2005?
Why did I go through all the trouble of learning to spell Laveranues?
Seriously though, I don't think Thrash, McCants, or Jacobs are ready to even be #2 starters let alone step into the big boy role. Say we draft Mike Williams still... who's the smaller speedy reciever we offset him with?
