Coles to be released!

Redskins Likely to Release Coles
Gibbs, Snyder Agree to Unhappy Wide Receiver's Request to Leave Team

Washington Redskins wide receiver Laveranues Coles has had at least two extensive conversations with Coach Joe Gibbs since the season ended which are expected to lead to his release from the team, according to sources familiar with the situation.

Sources confirmed last night that Gibbs, Redskins owner Daniel Snyder and Roosevelt Barnes, the agent for Coles, have reached an oral agreement that will likely lead to his release, making the 27-year-old wideout an unrestricted free agent.

Holy crap! I really did not expect this at all. Now wide receiver REALLY is our first priority!

Hmm, obviously he must be returning his signing bonus and the skins are going to somehow get him taken off the cap. If so, I really like this move. If not, I'd say this is a bogus article. We couldn't afford to take the cap hit for one thing, and you don't just release Coles without being able to replace him.

I hope it's true and we get some cap space. That would really give Joe some maneuvering room. He could sign a couple of the lower end WRs, like Patten(huge potential to be even better than he is now), and (soon to be released)Derrick Mason.

I also wonder if the NFL would grant as comp picks in the draft? I believe we surrendered picks to get him anyway.

If true, it will be interesting to see what the one toed wonder will get for a new contract...

If he is that type of "GIMME GIMME" player than forget him. He's not the team guy we need...a true Redskin. He needs to get his head on like Thrash does!

Well I like Coles I just don't understand how this got out. Obviously Coles handled it discretely and some idiot thought it'd make a good story. If he's not happy here, let him go, but why not trade him to get something for him unless there is an agreement in place and he is actually going to give back the signing bonus. I guess I'm just in shock and my child is going to be so upset to see him go. With his toe situation perhaps this is for the best though. He's a tough guy but we could use someone 100% healthy all the time.

If we can afford it, Derrick Mason and David Patten or David Givens, perhaps?

I'm still shocked. I, like everyone else, assumed he was going to be a lock on the roster heading into the 2005 season.

I'm very disappointed right now but I can understand where he's coming from. I didn't like that he wasn't being used to best suit his abilities last season.

Jake while I agree why the hell couldn't he wait it out like we are doing. We all knew it was a building year. He knew that going in. And sometimes you do things you don't want to when you are changing stuff.

Yes, this isn't the end of the world.

But man, it does hurt.

Last time I felt like this was when we let Davis go. . .but perhaps it can be seen in kind of the same light.

I wish Coles all the best wherever he might end up (unless it's in our conference). Hopefully not Philly.

Because the system isn't going to change. He would still be required to catch short screens on most of the passes thrown to him. And Gibbs probably told him that in their conversations.

"true Redskin"? Lavernues Coles showed himself to be a "true Redskin" the day Danny Boy signed him to that ridiculous contract and gave up 2 draft picks.

For a second, forget the fact that I'm a Cowboy fan and think about that for a while.

No thanks to Travis  . I would be pissed right now if Coles didn't have the toe problem. But with the way things are, I'm actually not bothered by this. I was really worried that Coles would never be 100% in regards to the toe. Now it doesn't matter.

We need to pick up a FA WR and draft Mike Williams.

The article actually says he is returning part of his signing bonus(I assume the part that's still against the cap), so if the cap ramifications are erased, I'd rather just release him. There are a couple pretty good receivers out there who we could get as cheap or cheaper than his contract was. The only thing that leaves, is what kinda compensatory pick we will get from the NFL if any. I'm pretty sure we will get one because we gave up a #1 for him, but that remains to be seen.

Maybe this will free up room to sign Fred Smoot???

Maybe Plaxico will move into the picture???

On the other hand...for you McCants fans.....this might open his door.

Only time will tell........

We are eligible for a compensatory pick? How does that work?

You know I think this can be for the best. He was way over payed. I think Taylor Jacobs can do an okay job replacing him speed wise. James Thrash is also a good target. But we now need Mike Williams in the worst kind of way. I wonder if this changes anything regarding Gardner?

Wow, this one is hard to believe and I am still shocked. It almost feels like an April Fools joke or something. I know Coles looked unhappy at times but I never thought he wanted out.

But the way I see it is this. He played hurt for us and was one of our better players while he was here. He has kept his mouth shut about this situation and for that I respect him. He didn't discuss it publicly and continued to play his heart out, and if a guy just isnt happy then sometimes you just have to give him his props and hope it works out for both sides.

I think it will hurt us offensively but on a team that went 6-10 and has stunk for the past few years no one is safe. The only receiver I would want that would make me feel good going into next year is Randy Moss, but that won't happen. So I am hoping we get a WR through the draft and not free agency.

Yes maybe now we will have more money to sign Smoot but "more" money was never the problem with him. The Skins have the money to sign Smoot but he is not worth the amount that he wants.

The Skins need to develop young cheap talent like Antonio Pierce and when the day comes that Pierce wants an obnoxious amount of money well then we skip over him and find another young buck to groom.

Anyways.....Im talking to much, I gotta go this one is going to hurt me for a while. I really liked Coles.

well, I won't pretend to be an expert on the subject of compensatory picks, so here is a John Clayton link on the subject.

BTW, I believe the 3rd round is the highest I've ever seen given.

Congrats, idiot, on only showing up when things are bad for us.

I'm going to only start coming to Jet forums when you all screw up or your players choose to sit out games.

What the hell does your team have to cheer about? An over paid sub-par QB who cant win a playoff game? When is the last time the Jets made the superbowl? Maybe it was that pantyhose wearing Namath. Do us a favor, and go back to NY and wait for the draft
