Medicine Problem

Post by NikiH »

Jackson has been sick since the week before Christmas. He has a horrible cough, runny nose. The works. We took him to the dr over 3 weeks ago and he got a 10 day cycle of antibiotics. But that dr was quite a ways away. So we have recently switched. The new dr said he has an ear infection and sinus infection. She did a chest xray to make sure there is no pnemonia, and it was clear. But here is my dilema. She gave us 3 prescriptions. One is eye drops to keep his eyes clear, he was having a little bit of a problem with that. She also gave him a stronger antibiotic that he will take for 20 days instead of 10. The third medicine is the one I have a problem with. It is a cough syrup only to be given at night. She said it would stop his coughing and let him sleep. He's been waking up several times every single night since mid December. So reading about it and it has a narcotic in it. Codine to be exact. I am very nervous about giving this to him. Scott is convinced the dr would not give it to him if it was not safe. But to me it is wrong to dope him up so he gets a good night sleep. I have asked all my "mommy" type of friends and they agree with me but of course they would. What do you think? Is it ok that he has these meds just to sleep and rid him of the cough at night? On a side note Scott gave it to him last night because I just could not bare to and he did not wake up once. Slept like a baby (pardon the pun) until after 9 am this morning.

codine is good stuff. no harm, but he'll definantly sleep. thats what my doc gives me when i go in for a cold. all i can say is it works. jackson will be fine, and be able to get some rest. you will too. ;) BTW, codine was actually a legal over the counter drug at one time, till teen age youths started taking it with massive amounts of alcohol. thats when it became "unsafe".

As a veteran "daddy type", I'd say "give him the meds". Codine cough syrup is pretty common. No risk unless you're a 40-year old hardcore addict, and even then, I think there is so little in the cough syrup that addicts find it cheaper and easier (aside from needing a prescription) to get high on something else.

Incidentally, I've had something similar...sinus, bronchitis, lingering cough, basically treated by heavy anti-biotics. My doctor said something like "I've been seeing a lot of this...there's something going around."

So the Little Redskin did not have just a cold. Good choice to treat it aggressively.

I'm one of those people that like the body to try and heal itself... so if my kids are feeling / looking really bad and they need something to make them feel better, then I give it to them... but if they just have a little cold or small cough or something like that... I just let them get through it... no need to give them stuff if they don't need it... just my 2 cents

Condine isnt bad, unless its severly over used. I'm thinkin that the amount of codine in the medicine is probaly not that much that any thing would happen to him, because from what I know about it, there is no mental addiction to it or anything that would really be harmful unless its overused.

So it should be OK. :)

And yeah, it WAS over the counter once. Like someone above me said.

I have an idea - Mom, drink several tablespoons of the codine, you'll sleep through it all! :-)

Totally kidding - I concur with everyone. It's fine in small doses and if it's not abused.

Where is Dr. DieselFan when we have a serious question.

Probably more important for little Jackson to get some sleep right now so he can get the rest he needs, not to mention you guys. Codine like anything can be abused, but I doubt he is getting a big dose - just enough to help him sleep.

Wish him well from the brothers & sisters at theHogs.net.

Jackson is actually doing much better. We had a quick visit to SC to see Scott's grandmother, who was lonely. His grandfather passed away recently and she usually did winters in warmer locales with him. So she was lonely. Scott being the wonderful grandson that he is, arranged a quick trip for all of us. Of course it killed both of us, as she uses her cell phone while she is down there, so no phone line for the computer. Ok that was seriously off on a tangent.
Anyway he got the needed rest thanks to that medicine and the antibiotics did the trip. He is back to his normal self and happy and sleeping through the night. ;-) Thanks for all of your input guys.

Codeine can be found (in trace amounts) in almost all the OTC stuff these days. Pediatricians are highly, highly trained (no pun intended on the "high" thing :) )

Jackson will be fine, and that medicine will certainly knock him out for a little bit.
