Draft buzz: The team's most obvious areas of need are wide receiver and defensive end. Free agent acquisitions will have a large impact on the team's draft selections.


If Mike Williams remains available when the team's first-round pick comes up (ninth overall), he will be hard to resist. He has the size, speed and ability the team needs at the No.2 receiver slot. A receiver of Williams' talent eventually could push for the No.1 job.


A less obvious area of need is in the offensive line. Derrick Dockery probably has one more year to prove he's a top-level offensive guard. In the meantime, the team will attempt to find a strong backup who can take over if Dockery falters. The team, under Gibbs, usually uses its mid and late-round picks for such offensive linemen.

This is about the OPPOSITE of what I have been saying all season long. I disagree in the strongest possible terms.

There is no use to have a great receiver if QB protection is poor. There is no use to have a great RB if there are no holes openning up in front of him.

We need a DOMINATING center. We need a dominating offensive line. The WHOLE Gibbs system is predicated over winning the battles at the trenches, the offensive trenches in particular.

I would rather keep my current roster of receivers and improve on the OL than try to get a fancy receiver to whom we can not deliver the ball. I know Joe and Co. will address this need so I am not worried. I just disagree with the above post.

What is the source of this draft buzz? is this your opinion or are you citing some other source?

I don't think you need to pick a center in the first round. If we want to pick a potentially great center we need a second rounder. Maybe we could package Morton and Gardner or McCants and Gardner for a second round pick. Just a thought.

I still think the key to our draft will be selecting Kay-Jay Harris in the 3rd round. Just for goal line and short yardage situations.

Generally speaking, most interior O-lineman are picked up in later rounds. Skill positions ususally go first, which is WR. Also, you can generally pick them up in FA, as well.

I would trade down,, namely second, and pick up Troy Williamson, David Bss in the second, nd for additonal picks another o-lineman in the 3d..Spend the rest of the draft beefing up the defense.

I ALMOST agree with everything you said! You still need atleast two top flight WR for Gibbs' offense. Because his max protect philosophy require WRs that can get open even double teamed. If you look troughout NFL history there has not een a more productive trio of WR than the Posse. That is fact and not my opinion!

For the record:

1) I did not say that we should pick a center in the first round.

2) I did not say that we should not get a receiver in the draft.

Let me clarify:

I believe that we will pick a center as a priority in the third round, hopefully Baas from Michigan if he is still available. This is an urgent need but I agree that nobody would invest a 1st round 9th draft pick on a center.

I feel that if Smoot does not sign with us, a good CB is a higher priority. I really like this kid A. Rolle. He would be very good in our system.

I am convinced that we will get one or two very good receivers but I have a gut feeling that Joe and his staff will pick a less "visible" player than Williams (which might be another Westbrook-Gardner high priced bust). Several threads have mentioned WRs with great potential and speed that may not go in the 1st round.

I still have difficulty figuring out how the FA period is going to be worked out -around- the draft as 1niksdeR put it in an earlier post. We should be looking at both processes at the same time and not one in isolation of the other.

As far as the OL goes. I believe the belief is that the OL can be addressed in FA rather than the draft.

I've seen some of you guys mentioning Jerry Porter lately. I wouldn't mind a (somewhat) proven guy like that here rather than drafting an unknown. What do you think the odds are for a Snyder signing?

I'd much rather take an unknown like Braylon Edwards or Mike Williams over Jerry Porter... He's too inconsistent in my opinion

Imagine if we got Porter and a center (say Melvin Fowler from the Browns) in Free agency -- then could use our draft picks (including a 3rd rounder for Gardner and a 5th rounder for McCants) on other needs...DE, TE, OG, CB (assuming Smoot leaves). That would fill more needs and give us a WR that has some experience.

Redskins4life -- Is Porter inconsistent or is the Raiders offense, offensive? They had a young (good) line but no running back, their QB was new... I think he would help us...

I like Porter but that would be an awful lot of money to be investing in the WR position.

I'd rather try to keep Gardner than sign Porter. At least Gardner has generally been healthy. At lot depends on Gardner and Smoot for where we use our #9. But a good OL selection wouldn't be terrible if M Williams is gone. Especially since there seem to be a bunch of decent CBs in the draft.
