Rumor Mill

Post by Wingman »

For all: Use this thread to post any of the many rumors that get circulated during the year.

Here is the most recent that I have heard...

I saw that Tampa Bay and their 11 draft picks in the 2005 draft are expressing interest in Rod Gardner. The Redskins are seeking draft picks and would accept mid round picks as compensation.

DO IT!!!! We need more picks.

I'd say we should get maybe a 2nd pick for him. Or a 3rd, 4th and 5th.

Also heard from my brother that a sports reporter from Indianapolis was on The Herd and was talking about trying to get Lavar...

Not sure about that or how they could afford him if it was a true statement.

from ESPN Rumor Mill:

Jan. 18 - Tampa Bay is said to be interested in veteran wide receiver Gardner, who is being dangled by Washington, reports ESPN.com's Len Pasquarelli. The Redskins probably will trade him for a middle-round draft choice.

The Texans also are thought to be in the market for a solid No. 2 receiver to play opposite Andre Johnson.

----------------

Jan. 18 - The Redskins could let Smoot go in free agency rather than use their franchise tag on him, reports ESPN.com's Len Pasquarelli. It appears some members of the Washington coaching staff have soured on Smoot, who is said to have earlier rejected a contract proposal that included an eight-figure signing bonus. Word is that those coaches have advised owner Dan Snyder not to keep Smoot.

I'd hate to lose Smoot, but I trust in Gregg Williams to make the most out of whoever we get, he seems very high on Garnell Wilds and others.

I wonder what will happen...

This might sound weird, but I don't want Manning :-\

I hope the rumors aren't true about trading Lavar. He is the face of this team. That would be like the Yankees trading Jeter or the Bulls trading MJ when he was there.

I'd rather have an entire no-named D, ranked in the top 5 in the league as a face than one person.

I like Lavar but I'm not opposed to trading him with the right deal.

I thought everyone in Indy was signed and happy except James? I agree how could the Colts afford LA? I know they have some good OL men.

I don't think that's enough compensation for Gardner and wouldn't let him go for any less than a 2nd rounder or a proven starter.
God bless our troops and Joe Gibbs.
We'll miss you, Joe.

LaVar would be a huge deal - one of the biggest in football history. We're talking Hershel Walker-like deal. The Colt would have to give us 2 - #1's, probably a 2nd rounder, some cash and all their cheerleaders to make the deal work. I think this is one of those - we really didn't land on the moon- rumors... fun to talk about though :0)

I'll take the cheerleaders.

Post by Redskin in Canada »

I'll take the cheerleaders. But wait a second...

Are these the same Colts that did not have enough cap room to keep M. Washington in their roster? And you are telling me that Lavar is in their sight? I do not think so.

Two words people on the lavar deal...

Salary cap.

If the first thing you ask yourself about a 'rumor' ISN'T 'does it make sense financially'... then you're in the dark.

The Redskins CAN'T POSSIBLY TRADE LAVAR ARRINGTON regardless of what the Redskins are offered. it would cost TOO MUCH cap money.

How can we trade a guy when it means that we will incur an immediate 30 MILLION DOLLAR CAP HIT.

HELLO?

Is this getting through to anybody? i seem to go through this every time that Lavar's name comes up. Whether you like it or not, lavar's contract dictates that Lavar is a Redskin for a few more years. We just can't afford to even think about doing anything with that contract. When you trade a player... you accelerate the ENTIRE signing bonus to that year's cap.

... LA has about 35 million in bonus money left after this 2004 season... 6.5M is a roster bonus in 2006 that we wouldn't be on the hook for cap-wise... but other than that... he's still owed like $29M in bonus money.

Yeah... let's trade him... pay the cap... and field a 23 man roster... we'll have one guy who backs up every position on the field. :-"
Sean Taylor was one of a kind, may he rest in peace.

BH it could work! Gregg Williams would become famous for his top ranked 3.5 million dollar defense!

So if LaVar decided he was unhappy and demanded a trade, we'd be screwed? Guess there is no way to work out the cap implications under a trade?

Here are the numbers I read:

The numbers don't work, Dan. The cost of trading Arrington and releasing Brunell (the cap consequences are the same in either case) prior to June 1 would be prohibitive. The dead cap for Arrington would be just a shade over $12 million and for Brunell it would be about $3.7 million. Add in Moss' salary of $7.25 million and you have about $23 million, or over a quarter of the cap, tied up in the acquisition of one player.
Again, prohibitive

Too funny! Not that far of a stretch though, if anyone could do it he could.

Going to comment on multiple topics.

NO WAY LaVar leaves. The man missed most the season because of knee issues but that doesn't make him expendable. He lives and dies for the Redskins. He loves our fans, our city etc... You all watched the 9ers game right? Where he basically just bulldozed that RT? He's a beast and would've had a huge year under GW. What's the first priority in a GW D scheme? Fast LB's. LaVar is that and then some.

GW was and will be a great head coach. Extremely intense and doesn't take anyones ish. You have to appreciate a coach who says "I want you to do this, if you can't do this for me sorry but you have to go." The entire U.S.A. thought it was a huge mistake taking McGahee that early. Who's decision was it and what has Willis turned into? Who's decision was it to get Marcus Washington? Great coach and I'm PRAYING that he takes over when Gibbs is through.

Randy Moss will NEVER be a Redskin. If you leave a game with a minute and a half remaining before the playoffs what does that say about your character? That was at Fed Ex too fellas. You don't think Gibbs saw that. If he didn't see it, you don't think he heard about it?

I think Gardner should go. He had one memorable game against Dallas on a #3 or #4 corner at the time. The rest of the year he didn't do ish. Also the reason for the entire Sean Taylor incident. He's gone. I'm hoping we'll get a 3rd round pick for him this year. I don't think it'll be any higher. He had his worst year.

Gibbs will never draft a fullback. He uses the HB. How many times did you see a back line up in front of Portis this year? Not very much.

What makes you say that ?

I picture Gibbs there, not Arrington.

Except both those teams were/are good. We stink, and LaVar doen't play disciplined, has been injured, and costs alot of $$$.

What we don't want is a "face of the team". We need a team. I don't think LaVar has ever really been a "me" type of player. I don't ever want to see him in another NFL uniform. I said the same thing about Champ but I thought Springs would work out nicely... and it did. Our LB's played great this year but LaVar would've opened up a lot more.

As far as LaVar not playing disciplined... a defense that ranks in the bottom tier of the league means more than one player isn't playing disciplined. Again, we need a team. I know what you mean though. Over running tackles etc. Too aggressive. But that wasn't the case this year with our D. I think a lot of that would've been quelled with him this year. He would've had a big year under GW.

Injuries... He misses one year because of a serious injury and now he's labeled "injury prone". Garbage. I suppose we should get rid of Jansen as well?
