Will Portis be traded this offseason?

Post by SkinzAre#1 »

I was wondering if Portis may get traded this offseason to recoup some draft picks or pick up a solid reciever and O-line help. Everyone is talking about how Betts fits Gibbs' system better, yet the guy quietly was just shy of 1,500 yards rushing! What do you guys think of this happening? It seems that it would be intriguing, but i'm not sure that Betts is a feature back. I think the best situation is to keep Portis and get a BUS Bettis type of guy for short yardage and goal line.

That will not happen. It would be to much of a cap hit to swallow.

Joe Gibbs has also said over and over that most of the team will remain the same.

What? This makes no sense what-so-ever. I give it a 0% chance.

There's a better chance of me laying a golden egg... than Portis getting traded this offseason...

probubly no chance but was brought up on the Redskins report with George Micheal's. It was brought up that the Skins should think about trading Portis to Miami to save some money.

Don't know whether this 'trade-Portis' business comes from the rumor mill or from ESPN, but don't count on it even having a chance of being true.

Even though we've heard the media say it over and over again, there is no such thing as a player that won't "fit in Gibbs' system," because by definition Gibbs' system is to match coaching to his personell. Gibbs came in with a west-coast air game designed in San Diego, switched to a powerhouse running team in his first few years here, and by the end of his first run with the Skins was airing it out quite a bit to a core of great receivers.

Given that this was his first season back, to have a 1,300 yard rushing back is pretty incredible, I think, especially considering a few factors: (a) our O-line struggled in many aspects this season, (b) there were those 1 or 2 games where, for one reason or another, Portis was a non-factor (Steelers game), and (c) He was injured for the last couple of games.

Betts has proved that he has what it takes to be our big back, so don't expect to see him go anywhere--but I doubt that he'll be our starting half-back come September 2005.

I do not see any chance of Portis not being here next season. I also do not think there is going to be a lot of changes. I feel that the changes will be in how we do things offensively and not through major changes in players.

Smoot may push the issue but he also could find that he might be back anyway.
Gardner may be traded but I think the other receivers will be here.

I really think that Gibbs will try and keep almost everybody and make some additions in FA and the draft.
Until recently, Snyder & Allen have made a lot of really bad decisions - nobody with any sense believes this franchise will get better under their guidance
Snyder's W/L record = 45% (80-96) - Snyder/Allen = 41% (59-84-1)

THANK YOU! THANK YOU! THANK YOU!!!!!

There are far too many here and in the media who think that Gibbs is all about the power running game.

This man won Super Bowls with 3 different QB's and 3 different RB's.

He has seasons where his team dominated the clock in ball control tedium, and seasons where his team absolutely lit up the scoreboard in big play touchdowns.

Gibbs was always known as the master of the halftime adjustment. The bigger picture is that he has always been a master at sdjusting his game planning to the strengths of his players.

I don't suggest that I have a crystal ball, but history tells me that next year's Gibbs coached team will be a model of execution... and a legitimate threat to the rest of the NFL. He WILL figure out how to get Portis into the open field, and he WILL figure out how to stretch the field, as well. Add 5 to 7 minutes in time of possession by the Offense, and Coach Williams D will look absolutely invulnerable.

I prefer a power back over a speed back any day. But Portis will be here for a long time and Gibbs brought in a west coast offense person to adjust his schemes to cut back running so he can fit Portis running style. He found out this year Portis is not a power back and is now adjusting. He won't trade Portis.

I think "He can't trade Portis" is more appropriate.

Any how I love all this talk on how Portis had an off year and how he does not fit this system etc.
Portis had a legit chance at breaking S. Davis franchise rushing record and at NFL history with a third 1500 yd season. If this is "an off year" then I'll take Portis any day of the week and 30 times on Sundays!

A more of a power back would have been nice this year. But now its over and the plays next year will be more around the players not the Gibbs old style.

Portis will be here for years to come and he will be a great back in Coach Gibbs system

Coach Gibbs knows not to let go of the best running back in the NFC
I miss you 21.

Portis is here to stay. Besides...as mentioned above, the cap hit would be to big to swallow.

There's no way we're trading Portis. He will still excel in our system with a healthy offensive line.

What we do need to get is another RB who can pound it in between the tackles down the near the goal line like Najeh Davenport or someone of his build.

No, I think you try to build the offense around a guy like that. Maybe we do sign a big bruiser of a fullback (i.e. a young version of Alstott) to complement him, and to get those third and goals at the two in the bag.
It's not clear on where Betts would fit in here if we do.

well thank you guys for all seeming to agree on this one. The thought of Portis leaving is almost as ridiculus as Moss coming here...
