Chump Bailey
Some people I know(not on this site) said that our secondary would be terrible this year without Bailey. They were way off. Springs had More INTs 6 to 3. The sad thing is Springs did not make the Pro bowl

Yeah I know and Smoot matched his. Both Springs and Smoot outperformed Baily. Baily sucked this year his only good game was his first. He made the pro bowl off reputation. I am not huge fan of Portis but I would take him over Baily any day. Walt Harris is as good as Baily. Baily being the best corner in the league has been BS. The reason he shut down recievers when he was with us is because look at our division. The Eagles before they had Terrel Owens, Giants who did they have, the Cowboys after Irvin went down for the year which means they had absolutely no one, and than the Cardinals. That 8 games a year, and if not shutting those guys down than there is a problem. He still didn't shut down those guys on a regular basis. He is being exposed though. Baily sucks and I am glad we got rid of that cancer.
Walt Harris is not as good as Champ. I cant believe anyone would even make that kind of statement. Bailey was good while he was here. Did he get burned...yes and everyone who has played that position will get burned sooner or later. I wish we had Springs and Bailey at our corner spots.John Manfreda wrote:Yeah I know and Smoot matched his. Both Springs and Smoot outperformed Baily. Ditto! Except for the Springs & Bailey at our corner spots. I think Smoot & Springs are the perfect duo for this Greg Williams "D".

It's tempting to say that Champ Bailey sucks, isn't a good CB, or that our best move in the offseason was getting rid of him. But all of those statements just aren't true. He's a pretty good CB--by no means one of the few shutdown CB's in the league but still good nonetheless.
That being said, I'm still glad that we aren't the ones paying him 50 million+

How can you go and say that champ sucks now that he is no longer on the skins. He gets beat a couple of plays a yr big deal he is human. A BIG reason why springs and smoot (dont get me wrong, smoot is my favorite player in the nfl) had better or equal stats in the INT column is the amount of balls thrown his way. Every coach in the nfl knows that he one of the best corners in the nfl and gameplan around not having to go his way as little as possible everyone that knows anything about football you dont try and play into another teams strengths. Give Champ credit when it is due, he is no longer a redskin but that does not mean we have to talk trash about him. Just to set things straight, I too believe we got the better end of the Champ for Portis deal but I still think Champ deserves some respect.

Champ is a good CB. Not great, but still pretty good. He was exposed the last couple years in washington and continues to be for the broncos. He's not the shutdown corner the broncos thought they were getting, but he's still better than what they had.
I didn't want him to go simply because I was still living in lalaland thinking he was a shutdown guy. Since then I've realized that he was actually a cancer in the lockeroom. Look at what he's doing to Smoot, who used to be the most loyal guy this team had seen since Darrell....
Bad apples must be driven out of the stadium and dropped on the corner with busfare. Hope your not one of them Smoot, but it's sure looking like it.
Oh, and as far as respect goes, If the Skins offer you a pretty fair deal, which we did with Champ, and you still want outta town, then screw you as far as I'm concerned. I definitely don't respect guys who have no loyalty. It's one thing if the team is trying to screw them, but we weren't doing that with Champ. He was outta here no matter what we offered him. Not to mention he talked smack about us after he left, which really burns me. Nope, I definitely don't respect Champ Bailey....

I'm with Scottskins on this one! Champ "maybe" was a shut down corner...back in the day. He hasn't been one in years, however, and any invitation to the Pro Bowl is certainly based on reputation only...and not his actual play.
Springs played as well, if not better, than Champ this year. Smoot did a decent job...but still has room for improvement. Then again, Smoot will likely be someone else's problem next year....

Did anyone watch Champ play this year? The games I saw he got burned a couple times a game! The last year with us he didn't play to his assignments, mainly on the goal line. How many times did the opposing team run a playaction to his side, and he bit hard leaving the receiver open at the back corner of the endzone?

Today's game against Indy is "the" test for Champ. He was brought by Denver to win -this- game in the playoffs.
He is a good but over-rated corner. How good? We will find out in a game like today's. This game will stick in people's minds one way or another.
I expect the Manning Colts to win.

Daniel Snyder has defined incompetence, failure and greed to true Washington Redskins fans for over a decade and a half. Stay away from football operations !!!

Defense wins championships
Isn't that how the Pro Bowl works, sadly ? I was arguing a couple weeks ago about all CP had to do was stay in the top 4 and he'd be a shoo-in because of his character. I forgot the most important criteria: "Were you there last year ?"
Seems that they have a seniority list they work off of for selection.

While I agree that Bailey is overrated I'd like to point out that Amani Toomer (Giants), Rahib Ismail (Cowboys) owned Champ Bailey. Champ has always been know to give up (or trip and fall) the big play. But he was really good on coverring the smaller passes, and that is when he batted them down or intercepted them. One thing is for sure, Champ Bailey has the best agent in the league...he showed him the $$$.

Exactly, the Raiders game in the snow was like deja vu. Kerry Collins once again picking Bailey apart just throwing the ball down the field. Toomer always owned Bailey.
And Oafsup, yes, Bailey has perfected the trip and fall move. This is the thing that always infuriated me. Glad to see someone else picked up on it. When the WR blows past him, oops, he stumbles, falls on his face and it's a TD. I've never seen a CB do that so often, it happens on occasion but Bailey does it over and over. I actually have started to think he does it on purpose or subconsciously. In some perverted way I think he may believe that if he falls it isn't his fault he has gotten burned but it's the turf or his cleats or some kind of excuse. It always happens right as the reciever blows past him. Maybe he should work on his balance in the offseason. He is an excellent pass defender on short routes but you can beat him deep every time, he is always a couple steps behind the reciever on deep routes. I think it's because he's too concerned on the short passes and making interceptions, he almost gives up the deep ball. he did this in Washington all the time and that's why in my previous post I stated that even when he was in a 'Skins uniform I thought he sucked. His first couple years were great but last year's performance was woeful and as the commentators said yesterday this seasons performance was poor as well.
I had the privilege of watching Champ get burned time and time again by the Chiefs this year at Arrowhead by the likes of Hall Of Fame-bound receivers like Eddie Kennison and Johnnie Morton. Truth is, I loved Champ when he played for us, but when he disrespected the team by saying that he didn't want to play here, I lost all respect for him. He's overrated, and as others have already mentioned, made the Pro Bowl on reputation alone. The national media tried to play up how he's a "shutdown" corner, but I really only saw that in his first few years in the league. He's a shadow of his former self, and is tremendously overpaid. Shanahan and the Donkeys got exactly what they deserved by barely making the playoffs and getting bounced in the first round. Genius-boy thought that Champ was going to make a huge difference, but they found out what Skins fans already knew: All talk, all reputation, can't back up either one. Does no one remember him getting fried by Joey Galloway a few years ago on Thanksgiving? That was the game-winning score, people!!! And it was Champ that gave it up!!!!!! We, and the Redskins coaching staff, saw the writing on the wall. Clinton, like him or not, is at least young, and still has his best years ahead of him. Champ will only get worse and slower as the years go by... The era of the "Shutdown Corner" is over.
I couldn't agree more. I'm becoming more and more convinced that the position is becoming more or less the place for a speedster, nothing more. DG would thrive as a modern-day CB. The rules all favor the WR's.
