Next Season's Tight End?

Post by Skinsfan55 »

What do you guys think about Anthony Becht from the Jets? He should be a free agent next season and he's a big guy who's an effective blocker, and no slouch as a reciever either. He's incredibly durable and with some work he could improve his already good blocking and pass catching skills. He seems like a good fit for Washington.

If it is a Jet, I would prefer Abrahams. We are set at TE with Cooley and Royal.

I'm fine with Robert Royal and Chris Cooley as our TE/HB going into 2005. They have sure hands and are endzone threats.

As long as Royal's injury history doesn't repeat itself, he will do fine as our starting tight end.

Why ? Why, oh why do we keep discounting Cooley as the future at H-B ? Who need Becht ? Not us !

Maybe we can find an offensive linemen that knows how to catch.

We need depth. I did not see Joe use any offensive linemen in on TE sets.

Cooley is great, but he is an h back not a tight end.

Becht could be a great player, why do you guys still hold on to this "They have to be a pro bowler or they blow" attitude? Did we not just see what good coaching can do with Gregg Williams' defense? I feel confident that Gregg Williams could handpick 11 of us off the message board and turn us into at least the 10th ranked defense in the NFL, lol.

Anthony Becht has always been just a little coaching away from being an elite TE. Couldn't Gibbs help him realize his monster potential?

If we need a tight end I would draft Heath Miller. I would not go after more "Used Goods".

I think we need to spend money in other places than tight end.

Cooley is the TE for next year. Good hands. Royals got hands too. TE is defintly one of our stronger postions.

I think we'd have a good shot of getting Miller in the second round. I can't recall if we still have that pick or not though.

But I have heard that Miller isn't a team player and may not turn out to be the star some thing he will be. Just a few wispers

The Skin's traded #2 pick for Cooley last year.

We don't need a TE unless he's a great blocker. The TE doesn't have to be a good reciever cause he's only going to catch 10-15 passes on the year.

Lets stick with Royal and Cooley.
Both have proved this season they can handle the position. If you all are forgetting Royal did make that 4th and 22 catch against GB I believe.

In the last several games i think Cooley has proved himself. Aftert all, he did have the most revieving touchdowns for the team. He is young and getting better, i think we should keep him.

Cooley isn't really a tight end.

Saying we're set at TE because we have Cooley is like saying we are set at DT because Arrington will be back next season.

Becht is a big blocker and someone who is a big improvement over Royal IMO. Royal is the only real TE on the roster.

This is an old thread, but I was wondering what you guys think now of Robert Royal, hasn't gotten ANY attention and rearely been talked about, from what I saw of him the last few games, he shows potential and looks like the starter right now

So we had to dig up a thread from months ago to talk about the TE situation eh? So be it :D

I've no complaints about Royal. He caught a couple TD passes didn't he? If it ain't broke, don't fix it. Let everyone gel.

For the love of anything/everything that is holy please, please, please, stop referring to over-used, over-rated "Cooley" as a tight end. He is way too small. He is an h-back and that is it. He is a blocker and that is it. :?

Thank you, had to get that off my chest.

There are various things I don't understand about this post.

1) He started half the season. Over-used HOW?

2) Who is over-rating Cooley? 62% of his catches last year were for first downs. We should've been using him a lot more.

3) Yes, he is an HB but as a rookie he played pretty well in a position used frequently in Gibbs' offense.

4) Undersized? He's actually prototypical. Cooley 6-3, 263; Tony Gonzales: 6-5, 251; Antonio Gates: 6-4, 260; Shockey: 6-5, 253; 1st round TE Heath Miller: 6-5, 255.

Skinz_Domin8:

Cooley=overrated? By who?

The media doesn't give him the credit he deserves.

Why shouldn't the fans?

Shawn Springs said that Cooley has the best hands on the team, period. I agree with him.

Just a blocker? Amazing how someone can score 6 touchdowns out of nowhere their rookie season and be just a blocker, isn't it?

Anyway, Cooley is a H-back, not a Tightend. Second, Royal is a good recieving TE and he caught a touchdown in each of the last four games. Third, Gibbs likes to have solid blocking TEs for certain plays and we need someone other than Royal for that.

- Model TE: see DEHog's avatar. A teeth-shattering blocker who can catch a pass once in a while.

Royal did fine; should get even better.

- Model H-back: Didier, Orr. Above 6-3, above 240 or 250 pounds, good hands, good blocker. [Yes, Clint Didier was even taller...6 foot 6?]

Cooley was also just fine.

Both are young, inexpensive players. Both have absorbed the Gibbs system.

As several others have said above: it works, so don't change it.

Could the team use some second/third stringers? Of course. But why look at the rosters of other teams?

I think it was Greg Williams this year that said at some point we have to start "home-growing" our own talent.
