Sean Taylor: Beast or Burden?

First off, I think Sean Taylor has the potential to be one of the greatest, if not THE greatest safety in the history of the game. That is obviously a very strong statement to make. Obviously his maturity, or lack thereof, has been an issue that needs to be addressed. His athleticism at the safety position is unprecedented, and he will quite possibly redefine the job description for all safeties. If potential is anything to go by, the hall of fame is quite possibly in his future. However, there are those "off field" issues that must be tweaked. His work ethic, and how he grows to be a student of the game remains to be seen.

Now, I can't stand Keyshawn Johnson! I think he's a loud mouth, obnoxiouis, over-rated player who is mediocre at best. He has never fully realized his potential, and is destined to live in a football sea of mediocrity. But, he made comments that for some strange reason have me thinking. That brings me to the poll question.

Does Sean Taylor try so hard to make the "big hit" on the No. 1 guy, that it exposes weaknesses in our defensive backfield that opposing offenses are chomping at the bit to exploit? I myself think that the answer lies in how Sean Taylor can learn the game of football. Those type of things can be tought by coaches, and studied by Sean. His talent is God-given, but the mental part of the game, and how he evolves, I think, is what will define Sean Taylor.

The fact that Sean Taylor is on the field is proof of his work ethic and commitment to the team concept. The coaching staff would not allow a player to play out of the scheme or under perform, he'd be on the bench as he was in the first game.

Sean Taylor allows the defense to blitz as liberaly as they do. Smoot and Spring were out today and they just roll ST over to the #1 WR. Yes ST did get scored on today but he was there, and had a chance to make a play. Oh yeah, he is just 21 years old. I think he has a little time to develop. :wink:

I can't wait till LaVar and Taylor are all on the field at the same time. 8-[

What was the nickname for the D in '90 - National Defense was it? :hmm:

but he needs to stop acting like a punk. His off-the-field stuff is unnecessary and a distraction. He needs to grow up and drop the Miami thug attitude.

Sean Taylor does bring alot to the team, and he is only 21 years old (very good draft pick!) I know there were times where that his agressiveness hurt the team, but Gregg Williams will help him develop and be an elite safety in coming years

One thing I've noticed about ST is that he doesn't tackle ... he hits.

He rarely wraps his arms around the ball carrier. Instead, he just lays a hit on them and most of the time they go down.

I love this guy. He plays so hard! The tape on the facemask is great too! I think he can get over his off the field problems and although on occasion he was a but overzeleous and missed plays he improved as the season went along. And on the Moss TD I give him credit for being right there. He didn't let Moss get past him but he just got taught a little lesson by the best WR in the NFL who made an incredible catch! He'll learn from that.

Just on a side note, the other thing about Moss is he never gives the DB a hint of when the ball is coming, he only reacts to it at the last minute and that's what makes him such a deep threat. Watch him this weekend and see what I'm talking about. He acts like he's running his route and then he will only react to the ball the instant it gets there. He doesn't put out his arms in anticipation or adjust his body, he just waits calmly and then snags it so a defender who is covering him and is watching him and not the ball has no clue what is going on. He makes so many catches down the field where there are two guys on him and you can see that neither reacts, neither has a chance to turn around or put their arms up because he doesn't cue them to when the ball is coming. It's truly amazing how he does that, he's a fun player to watch.

Anybody else wonder what exactly Sean Taylor is saying to those receivers when you see him walk over and jaw at them a little bit? I guess we'll never know for sure, but if you watched Nate Burleson drop that pass over the middle yesterday you just KNOW he was thinking about where Taylor was more than he was concentrating on pulling the ball in.

Yeah, I love that too. I loved it how he kept talking to TO in the Philly game. It was non-stop. And when TO saw him coming and turned around and ran out of bounds like a girlie man, Taylor really let him have it. That was great! And that's the other thing, he's there on EVERY play. It doesn't matter where the ball goes, he's always right there to help out or make the tackle.

I can't believe this is even a question.

The guys 21 years old and a first year rookie.
That being said, the bobble-heads are talking about him becoming the greatest S ever.

He's been torched a few times but I've seen the greated backs in the league get embarrased at least one play a game. That's where the pass rush comes in to save them. Moss cought one TD pass yesterday. How many does he usually get, and how many games did Culpepper get +3 TD passes a game. Also, ysterday's game was without Smoot and Springs (part of the game). T.O. was shut down twice and is there any doubt that the Philly WR's were wetting thier pants?

It's his first year and he's a little over eager. Williams will fix that. How many times were the same things written about Arington? He still over-runs a play now and then.

AS far as his off field antics... he's 21 and suddenly rich. Also, he was with other players when they happened. How come nobody is complaining about them?

Sean Taylor is a stud. WIthout any doubt in my mind, he was an outstanding pick...I know we could have taken Winslow but I think Taylor and Cool

ey is better than Winslow and any other Safety in the 2nd round. Plus, Taylor is actually a nice guy, Winslow is a jerk and has a jerk for an agent. I'm not so sure Winslow's teammates like him either. Cool

ey will become a very very good HBack in time -- sort of like Wycheck (who we should have kept).

Like another poster said -- he's around every single tackle that's made...either making it our standing right there.

By the way, what did MeShawn say about Taylor, I missed that.

I don't know anything about you, but I'm glad to know that one of my fellow Redskin fans never made a mistake after the age of 18. I myself never made a mistake after turning 15! Can you believe it!?! :roll:

I'm not condoning what Taylor's done off te field, but I understand it. I made a few mistakes myself around his age, and I actually turned out just fine. Get off the dude's back! He is just a kid in a man's body. He'll learn, just like the rest of us.

I'm only including this one post, but all you keep saying is that he's a man and needs to act like one. I don't recall having a switch that I flipped when I turned 21 that made me "grown up". Lose your holier than thou act and give the kids props for the good work he does on the field and expect a few mistakes along the way. He is human like the rest of us (except you, apparently). :roll:

total beast. I love this kid. He's even more of a playmaker than Arrington is. I wouldn't be surprised at all if he plays a little LB once or twice in his career. He's fast enough and athletic enough, that he actually makes the corners better.

I could care less about the off field stuff he's done. He's young, rich and having fun. He'll grow up just like we all do.

The only thing I'm worried about is his contract situation. If he pushes for a new contract, my view of him will diminish. Like it did with Arringtons whole ordeal. These players have got to start realizing they are well paid, loved and get to play football in the NFL. Greed just aint gonna cut it on Gibbs team, so get used to it or get out =)

TO hasn't had any non-football related problems but he spent several years publically ripping his qb and yelling at his offensive coordinator on the sidelines. So what's more harmful to a team, a player criticizing his teammates or a young rookie not being able to pick an agent??? Sure Taylor has had some problems but who didn't when they were that young. He's a BEAST and I'm glad that he's on our team instead of on somebody elses.

just kidding ya wysocki. I resent it as well. As usual with TO, what the heck does it have to do with football. Not to mention that he no longer plays with Garcia, so why should he care?
