Draft D

Post by Redskins2k5 »

Why would we wnt to draft a defensive player. Look at how many no names we have playing great this year. Why would we waste that pick when we should go after a Reggie Bush or a great T.E. With the number 2 ranked D why would we draft another Defensive player.

Why would we go after Reggie Bush?

Personally, I think the biggest need is another offensive lineman. The line has been the sole weak spot this year. Jansen's return will help as well as another year together.

I'm not sure whether Dockery is getting it done. He seems to have great size and potential but he's inconsistent. Center has been a problem area as well. Perhaps somebody like the Michigan guard would fit in nicely.

However, I think it depends on where we fall in the draft. If we lose two more and have a top 10 pick, go DE and pick up an O-lineman later. If we win two more, I'd use of a middle of the road draft pick on an o-lineman.

We do need somebody who can pressure the QB without blitzing extra people.

Redskins2k5, I love offense as much as the next guy, and sure this defense of ours is playing great, but when one of our biggest needs (Pass Rushing DE) is so readily available in the 1st round, we ought to take a chance don't you think? I don't know if any TE's will be worthy at our pick even though I'd love to get one. Center is also a very real need. Personally, I've changed my stance on Williams. He'd be an awesome compliment to Coles, but Gardner is still pretty darned good. I say we give Rod another shot and the offense will start clicking next season with an improved line.

I think the way Gregg Williams has our DL playing, we can get a "blue collar" free-agent, someone a little better then what we have now, can make a HUGE difference. I wouldn't be mad if we drafted a DL, but I think we need more depth at CB! If Punksten caught the balls that were throw to him, that game could've been ugly, Philly had to many guys getting open. I say draft a CB that can start his career as a 3rd CB & eventually take the place of Springs. We give up more deep balls then big runs & it's because of the lack of depth we have!

Well, I don't think Walt Harris is too bad... But some depth would be nice in the CB corps.

When Bowen comes back Franz, Clark, and Lott are great backup safties IMO. Maybe we should draft a CB in the later rounds...

Philly was completing (or nearly completing) passes because McNabb had all day to throw.

What happens is when you take Taylor and put him on T.O. to help a corner, now you have to cover the TE with a linebacker, which means you can't blitz a linebacker. For much of that game, we rushed only four guys. It's a testament to our secondary that they stuck with receivers.

When your secondary is as good as ours, we should have a number of coverage sacks from our D-lineman. That's why we need a rush end, not a cornerback that will get on the field only a handful of times during a game.

We need to draft a Pass Rusher because although we have an unbelievable defense already, we don't have a good pass rush

Reggie Bush is a Sophmore, and since you havent heard of Mike Williams or Maurice Clarett, Sophmores cant enter the draft.

Why would we go after a great TE? we have one... Chris Cooley. (and can you name a GREAT tight end in the draft?)

The reason we would go Defense in the draft is because our Offense is already loaded with stars, the only reason we struggle is because we haven't gelled yet and bringing in a Mike Williams or QB would only make the proccess longer.

If we get a stud pass rusher, we just throw him in our great D and puts pressure on the opposing QB and takes pressure of everyone else on our D.

Recently in an interview Parcells said his big mistake going into this season was believing he was set on Defense because of the prior season's success...let's not make the same mistake...Let's continue improving the D, Another Sean Taylor attitude at any position on the D would be great. In the first round however I believe we MUST go offense, we just haven't had the production neccessary to compete...this of course would all change if the Danny could pull one out the hat and grab Burress or Ward or (my pipe dream) Moss! Look what TO did for PHI, we need that desperately even more than an OL, which I believe Buges can fill w/late rounders

Another option is in the fact that the SKINS are due for a trade...not a stupid give up too much for someone too old (Boonell)debacle but a move that gives us extra picks, perhaps dealing one of our under achieving wideouts would do the trick.

Merry Christmas everybody!

So we have Taylor & Springs on TO, then we have Smoot & Bowen/Clark on Pinkston & Mitchell????? Bowen & Clark are not that dependable, we seen Clark get burned (at least) a few times last week & Bowen plenty of times last year.

Now what happens when we play the Giants & Taylor is covering Shockey (besides him getting shut-down, LOL) or when Taylor is covering L.J. Smith or Whitten then we lose the double coverage for the WR (using Taylor) which leaves Bowen, Clark & Harris (who I like but where was he on the "Punkstin Play", I don't remember. We have to many great TEs in the NFC East to depend on Taylor for Double Coverage on a WR.

We can get a quality pass-rushing free-agent DL, maybe John Abraham (who's actually great & a free agent next year). In my opinion, unless it's a guy like Julius Peppers, "rookie" DL don't have huge impacts there 1st years. Where's Tommy Harris, Will Smith, Marcus Tubbs, I've heard DeAngelo Halls name more this year and he's been injured. I'm not saying these guys are bad (or anything like that), I just think a quality CB will have more of an impact next year then a rookie DL.

Again, I also think finding a relacement for Springs sooner is better then later, it take time to get to the NFL speed. Ina year or 2 we can move Spings to SS, Smoot to #1 And this rookie will be a Quality CB by then to be a great #2

When you get complacent you get beat.

We need to improve our defense because everyone is going to be looking how to stop us next year. Don't get caught up in the #2 ranking, we are FAR from where we could be.

Our offensive needs could be found later in the draft our free agency. All we need to fix on offense is our line, and maybe another FB, or TE, none which require 1st round picks.

I think we need a lesson on the difference between needs and wants.

QB, WR, RB, TE, CB, SS, and FS are not needs for us this coming year.

O-linemen, and D-linemen are what we really need. Everything starts at the line.

Cornerback is not a pressing need, but we cannot pass up Antrelle Rolle if he is available. CB is one of those positions where you don't see very many (if any) late round picks or UFAs become Pro Bowl caliber players. Champ, Springs, McAllister, Deion, Woodson, D.Green, T.Vincent...etc. all first rounders. Like Ant pointed out, Rolle could be the third CB right away and take over for Springs down the road( He is also a dangerous return man on ST ). Harris could be fourth and that would make our secondary the best in the league hands down. Look at Philly, they had two guys waiting in the wings before they got rid of Taylor and Vincent.

One of the main keys to our success on D this year was obviously our corners being able to go one on one, allowing GW to be as aggressive as he wanted to be. The Redskins are rare because they have two number 1 guys on the outside.

If Smootie or Springs go down, that will not be the case. Harris is fine as the third corner. Jimoh sucks. It may not be as pressing of a need as OL or DL, but drafting a stud CB at the top of the draft doesn't mean we can't address those needs in FA or later in the draft. It is unlikely we will find a stud CB later in the draft and we can't afford one in FA.

Look what happened in SF. Harris got torched by Dorsey and the Niners. I don't want him as the starter against McNabb and Co. It will limit what we can do on D, because he will need more help.

If we can trade down and acquire more picks, we can get a speed rusher, DT or possibly one of those big OLineman from UVA and still get a CB in the 2nd round. As it stands though, we don't have a 2nd and if there aren't any trades on the table good enough to pick up a couple extra picks then we need to grab Rolle if he's available.

It's fun to speculate, but it is way too early to worry about all of this. We don't even know who is coming out and who isn't or what will happen in FA, which will change our draft needs drastically.

no one has 3 great CBs. it's not neccessary, you can have a great defense without it. if we had a good pure pass rush (without blitzing), that would compensate for the lack of a great CB for every single receiver on the opposing offense (keep in mind most teams don't have 3 great receivers anyway, so that's another reason you don't need 3 great CBs).

that being said, i would like to pick up a decent 4th CB in free agency, since jimoh stinks.

the real needs of the team seem to be thus:

1. OL
2. TE (cooley is an H-back, not a TE. there is a difference)
3. FB
4. pass-rushing DL

if we have one or two better OL, a good TE and FB, we won't need any new WRs. our WRs are somewhere between "good enough" and "great" (if healthy). there aren't many teams that have as much talent and depth at WR as us. in fact i agree we could afford to trade one of them (gardner or possibly jacobs?) to fill another need. plus keep in mind that WRs typically take 2-4 years to really develop in the NFL, which would basically make it worthless for gibbs to draft him if he wants to use him.

the only way we should even consider drafting a position other than one of these needs is if it's a potential superstar like sean taylor was/is.

We dont need 3 great CBs but we need to upgrade from what we have and Antrelle Rolle would be a upgrade, a player that would here for awhile, and Cheap compared to what we'r pay for in FA

1.We have to get OL help---but not that early in the draft.
2.We need a blocking TE ---you can look at that as needing OL help
3. Joe Gibbs doesn't use a FB
4. We could use some help in the pass rush ---The D is ranked #2 without a DE (so is that a need?)

Trading down (but not out of the first round)for more picks
or
Drafting the best player available
are our best options depending on :hmm: WHERE we pick in the first round

Exactly my point. It would make our defense that much stronger and the envy of the league. It would not effect us filling our other needs either.

That's what Rolle is ( a potential superstar ).

Look, he probably will be gone when we pick anyway. All I'm saying is IF he's there, we should get him.

Yes. We could have three starting CBs for what Denver is paying for one and a half. We would be set at CB for 4 or 5 years atleast.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not against taking a DLineman/Speed Rusher. I just think we can accomplish that in FA or later in the draft. Our D has been playing without LA in there rushing. With another top cover guy, we could send Marcus or LA with the four lineman on every play and be fine.

In my humble opinion, as i stated in a post earlier, I think defense is set. We don't need to pass rushing defensive end because in williams' system they're set up to stop the run. And since we're number one in the league in doing that I think we should leave the defensive line alone. Our pick will probably be anywhere from 8-18 so I think unless a superstar has dropped ( a mike williams or a rolle, who is gonna be a great corner i think ) , we should trade down and get two second round picks, since we lost ours. Someone said earlier that with so many good DE's in the draft why not draft one in the first round. Every year teams get googly eyed over qb's and good wr's, so the large amount of DE will cause some of them to drop down into the second round. In the second round we would be better served picking up an offensive lineman and maybe a defensive end or wide receiver. Remember, last year kerry colbert went in the second round and he's done great so far in carolina so they can be found in the second round.

i actually agree with a lot of what's being said. i haven't followed college ball very closely this year so i'll be the first to admit i'm not up on all the draft prospects, including this antrelle rolle (is he samari rolle's brother, out of curiosity?).

1niksider, did you mean "gibbs doesn't use a FB"? i think i got confused by the fact that mike sellers was here before and he was a FB and i've noticed that he's been a problem, so i thought "we need a few FB". but i guess he's playing "H-back" here, so "my bad" as they say.

i also don't mean to say that those needs i listed are the order in which they should be tended to in the draft. i agree that we probably don't need to spend the 1st rounder on an OL, unless there is an absolute stud out there. i definitely advocate looking into trading down for 2 2nd rounders. anyways, like i said i don't know what the prospects are, i just think we need

1. OL
2. TE
3. pass-rushing DE

i do think it is more important to have a pass-rush from the line than some are proposing. even if all of your LBs/DBs are great coverage guys, you automatically open up a hole in the coverage if you have to send one (or two or three) of them in to blitz to create a pass rush. most of the big plays we've given up this year have been on blitzes that backfired (not saying we shouldn't ever blitz, just pointing out it has a downside).

anyways, clearly we need more help on offense than on defense. but first we have to identify what on earth is really going on, what is the problem?? i know we need a better TE and jansen's injury was huge. but still, "on paper" our offense should be in the top 10 at least, which would make us almost unbeatable considering how the defense has played. what gives?

We can WIN with our defense (ranked #2). We NEED to upgrade offensive line (especially center) and we need a Fullback that can get a couple yards by moving the pile. When we are inside the 5 with 1st and goal this should be a gimmie.

Also, I would like to see more seperation by our receivers. :)
