OK I'm tired of reading this argument. I for one loved the call!
1. Because we would have won the game outright, and this was a playoff game we needed a win.
2. Because It showed that not only did JG think we could play with Philly but he thought we could beat them.

One guess as to the last thing JG said to Ramsey before the headset to his helmet went off....Patrick if you so much as see one green jersey near Chris, throw it to the guy in the Redskins cap in the fouth row!

It was a good call... if we hit it he's a genius. Otherwise we would have ran Portis twice and played OT.

Like DeHog I loved the play call, but hated the throw. And besides Joe Gibbs knows what he's doing. You can 'what if' crap all week long when we lose, but the bottom line is that was a good play call. It was first down and why not go for it all? Then, like DeHog said, run the ball the next two plays if it doesn't hit.

I blame that throw into triple coverage on Spurrier. Spurrier always wanted that big pass play. He really did screw with Ramsey's head. But Ramsey is going to learn from that and he has learned the hard way.

One more thing....why do you want to question Joe Gibbs? I don't understand it....WE PLAYED PHILLY!!! And we almost beat them!!! Philly has just decimated the NFC this year. We were the only ones to keep the game close!

Im sorry but Im tired of seeing these posts. Don't hold Gibbs up to what you THOUGHT was going to happen. Don't get sour at him because things didn't go your way. Don't degrade Gibbs because I can assure you that you COULD NOT do his job 1/1000000th of how he does it. Its not as simple as just giving Portis the ball.

My 1st question to you is, have you really watched any of the games this season? Can you not notice the difference in this team?!?! All of our previous coaches wanted to win and win quick without building the TEAM 1st. Gibbs is turning this franchise into a team and those of us who know football can see where we are headed!

I disagree with you again. Gibbs knows how to utilize Portis. I've seen a sufficient increase in his activity and productivity in the past few weeks. The problem lies with our personel. Our line is not the best, and we lost key players. Our line could never gell because of the injuries and we had to constantly put people in week after week.

Also when Gibbs has more than ONE SEASON TO TURN US INTO CONTENDERS , he'll be able to acquire better players who can play his scheme.

Even if we had scored the TD, the Eagles had 1:50 on the clock and 3 timeouts. When these things are added up with the Eagles, you know they could've EASILY scored! Look how they've won their other games!

Here are the plays they could have done:

Deep bomb to T.O.
McNabb runs for 1st downs and then outside all the way
Screen passes to Westbrook

The way I see it ------ TD, TD, TD!!!!

However good our Defense is, they would've capitilized and won out the game. Come one now! It's the E-A-G-L-E-S!!!!!!!

We should have run the ball with Clinton, wasted some time, made them take timeouts, and then when we got closer....throw the ball into the endzone!!!!!!!!!!
And even if we did not get the TD, we would've aleast gotten the Field Goal and gone into O.T., which I think is a hell lot better than losing!

That was a horrible play, even if it did work!

Philly gets it on their 35 yard line. Throws one more long pass, kicks a field goal and the game is over. Good call for Joe, go for the gusto. Nahh man, if we had kicked the field goal, we would not have done it without wasting as much time as possible. If we had just gotten one first down, the game clock would've been too low. (assuming that the eagles would take their timeouts)

No I don't think Williams coaches like that.. we owned Philly late in the game.
That's another reason I liked the call because it would've forced Philly to go the length of the field to beat us instead of just needing a FG to win.

Any play in at any time can go either way. It could go good for us, it could go bad. Patrick was having a great game imo. I would have went for the kill also. Just because I would have went about it in a different manner doesn't make my way correct.

I would have ran Portis a bit more. What IF Portis fumbled? Then you all would be calling me an idiot for not letting ey who was hawt all game try to get the win.

What IF Gibbs would have kicked the FG and John missed. You all would be crying that Gibbs was crazy to use a broke down kicker.

What if nothing bad happened and we won, you'd be singing Gibbs praises.

Gibbs made a good call. Gibbs can't go out there and call the play, throw the ball, catch the ball, block the DE, make the cut, make the break, keep both feet in bounds, watch the clock, hike the ball, and break tackles for us.

I went to a sales training class today held by a linebacker for the Dolphins who beat us in the superbowl. He said exactly what Gibbs is doing. Don't expect to chase the goal today, prepare for tommorow and you will prosper for the long term. In my buisness of Real Estate i could search day end and day out for the client looking to sell today or the client looking to write an offer on a house today but i would be chasing forever. Thats what the skins have pretty much been doing since Snider took over. What they need to do is keep doing what their doing and meet player and evealuating them. Create the right chemestry. Once you get that you'll notice that you've got a core group of guys. I watch a lot of football. The team i see doing that today on offense is the Colts. They know each other better than they know themselves. How many times has Payton thrown a ball 10 yards away from the nearest receiver. Now keep in mind that receiver has his head turned away from him but he makes a cut and the ball is right there. Thats what i'm talking about and I think thats what Gibbs is getting at. I hope that ey, Coles, and Ramesey and a couple other guys get together and play a little bit of backyard football in the offseason. Springs should come along b/c word on the street is he's hangin with T.O. and Donovan McNabb. Anyways, I think that Ramsey and ey have a good think going and Coles is somewhat involved with that. They just need to find one other guy to fill that 3rd niche to throw off Defenses. Maybee its McCants,Jacobs, or anybody. Someone else needs to step up.

I've seen a lot of posts critical of Joe Gibbs, but this one takes the biscuit. Not only is it the most outrageous, but it is also the biggest waste of text I've ever read. INSTANT WINNERS? Dude, learn about football!!!

I'm with DE on this one. It was not just a good play call, but it was a GREAT one!! If we make that TD, our D would have in all likelihood held Philly, and they needed more than a field goal. If Ramsey had thrown it away (which I think he should have) we still had time to get closer to try and win it.

I'm sick of hearing this crap about Gibbs utilizing Portis wrong. People that say such a thing are only talking because they like Clinton Portis, and wanna see him run the ball. The flow of the game dictates how Portis is used, not whether or not coach Gibbs is going to appease some fan at home watching the game wanting to see Portis run the ball.

The answer to this was posted by 1niksder in the Game Day forum....

If Ramsey would have thrown the ball away it would have been 2 and 10 and the Defense would have been on their heels. That's when we could run time off the clock picking up a 1st down and moving down the field. We were already in FG range with a healthy J Hall. But going for the win was definatly the right call. It lets the players know that the coach wants to win, will take his shots and not always playit close to the vest.

Ramsey will/has learn from this, which will only help this team so win or lose we are a better team because of one play that also caused us the game.

One week people are complaining about opening up the offense and the next they are complaining about throwing it in the endzone. If we need to complain about something, it needs to be the stupid penalties. If Sellers would not have gotten the PF, we would've potentially been on the 12 instead of the 27.

Gibbs said they thought the Eagles were going to blitz. We guessed wrong and Patrick tried to make a play. It turns out Dawkins made a play and Johnson guessed right. Give them some credit and move on. I'm just glad we were that close for a change. It was close enough to be challenged by the replay official. (Which was the right call by the way).

The next step forward is to spank the 49ers today.

Personally, I would have liked them to take some time off the clock before going for the endzone shot - they had time and timeouts to use. This doesn't make me right and it doesn't make me wrong, just my football opinion.

One thing is true, I don't have any less faith that Joe Gibbs will return us to the glory days, or that my love of the Skins is any less than what it was prior to Dec. 12th.

The beauty of this sport is we get to analyse and critique and generally have a good time being "arm chair quarterbacks". But at the end of the day there is one thing of which I am certain - There is a Football God - and I ain't him!
