Portis might change red socks after NFL's ``stupid'' fines

Portis might change red socks after NFL's ``stupid'' fines
Wednesday, December 15, 2004
(12-15) 16:05 PST SANTA CLARA, Calif. (AP) --

Washington Redskins running back Clinton Portis might change his socks Saturday after two weeks of fines from the NFL for wearing unsanctioned red hose.

Portis and safety Sean Taylor were fined $5,000 apiece for wearing red socks instead of the Redskins' usual white during a game against the New York Giants on Dec. 5. They received another fine for the same violations of the league's uniform rules in last Sunday's game against Philadelphia.

Portis criticized the fines during a conference call with reporters in California on Wednesday -- but also acknowledged they're getting his attention.

"The fine is getting pretty expensive, so I don't know," Portis said when asked if he'll wear the socks in San Francisco. "I've got to come up with some kind of scheme to find a way to get out of it."

Portis, who rarely speaks to the media in Washington, has rushed for 1,173 yards and five touchdowns this season, but the Redskins (4-9) have an otherwise-dismal offense. In his first game wearing red socks, he rushed for 148 yards on 31 carries against the Giants.

He said he chose the socks for "just a different look and a different feel for the game."

"I think that is a stupid fine for the simple face that they want everybody to be the same," Portis said. "This is an individual game, you know. That is the thing that has the league being the No. 1 sport, because different personalities come together as one and people enjoyed that.

"Now all of a sudden, you're trying to make everybody the same, and it's not going to work. Your players don't even enjoy themselves. ... The people that are fining you are the main people who were around here doing all the crazy stuff back in the day."

The NFL often employs former players to spot uniform violations during games.

Are you still here? Jeez.

Anyway, I think Portis doesn't quite understand the whole concept of uniform. This isn't a new rule.

:thump: Uh... NO IT'S NOT! It's a team sport..... That thinking is the reason why we have so many super stars in basketball that play on bad teams... Can't people see the Pats, and their all for one, everyones a star attitude. That's the formula for winning...

No matter how good Portis & Taylor may be... Their "Me, Myself, & The University of Miami" attitude is starting to wear me thin... The "idea" that we should have went harder after Alexander, or waited till this year to get him, is starting to creep back into my head... PUT ON YOUR SOCKS AND SHUT UP!

I agree with BTP. That sentence about individuals didn't sit right with me at all. Everybody knows that the NFL has had strict uniform regulations for a long time (just try leaving your jersy untucked, and you'll be facing a similar fine).

Well, it's only $80,000 a year (16 games * $5,000) for the socks, Portis. More when we make the playoffs next year.

How's that Super Bowl ring? Oh, I forgot, you have none.

Me too...

Do not let a fool get this thread off-topic. Please ignore him. If I was the moderator, he would have been kicked out of the board for repeatedly breaking the rules (flaming and personal attacks). I think those red socks look awesome and I really dont think the league should FORCE players to wear white socks. The red looks great

What the league is doing is trying to keep a "team sport" a "team sport"...

Portis doesn't get his big yards unless the line blocks for him...

T.O. doesn't get his 15 TD if McNabb can't get the ball to him...

Peyton Manning doesn't throw 50+ TD's if his Wide Recievers can't catch...

See how football is a team sport? There's no room for individuality. Nor is it a fashion show...

If the players like the red socks better they can ask the team to make the uniform change official for next season.

I don't care about the socks, but I guess I'm looking to find out if the whole team was fined, since you can't make uniform changes mid-season, and it appeared to me that they were all wearing red.

Also, why would the team provide non-standard equipment to players, when they should know better?

The socks most of the team wore were burgundy and white (mostly burgundy...the top 3rd was burgundy)

The socks that Portis wore were all burgundy

You know, this reminds me of last season when LaVar wanted to wear (as I recall) the all white because they had a good game wearing them. Didn't pan out.
Here's a clue. Superstition is nonsense. It doesn't matter what you're wearing. It's all in the player's head.
Change your socks and save your money, CP.

ROTFALMAO Pigeons suck. Ur whole team's like butter. BROKEN THIS, BROKEN THAT! You tried so hard for nothing son. When I say "No", you say "Superbowl"... "NO" "Superbowl".. "No" "Superbowl" win a superbowl and then talk s***

============================

Now, back to the topic. Everyone should wear the Burgundy socks, or at least the burgundy jersies. What's with all the white?

How come we dont wear our Burgundy jersies anymore? Is it because white is easier to see? Maybe it's because Gibbs want's to be consistant, like how he was with brunell.

Since we're playing a pretty crappy team, we should wear our Burgundy jersies. Unless it mixes up with the 49ers burgundy :). Whatever. But Portis has millions, I bet he'll still wear the burgundy socks.

All i know is that i hope he wears them this weekend and rushes for 200 yards. I want him to break 1500 yards this season. He's worked for it. If the line helped him out a bit more he would have easily achieved it with all the carries he's been given. Anyways, see you at the game this weekend. It's my first skins game ever in person.
