Its a damn shame how many passes this guy drops. Why cant he catch? is it the scheme?

I mean he is wide open half the time.He did the same crap last year. McCants should be starting. He catches just about everything thrown his way. How many 1st downs did he drop, shhhhhhhheeeeeessssshhh

I thought the same thing, so I scoured the net for some stats and was a little surprised by what I found...
Rod Gardner has been thrown at 89 times and caught 44 passes. I don't know how many of them are drops and the only stat I found said that Gardner had 4 drops on the season. I swear I can remember games where he had that many. So anyway, Gardner only catches about 47% of the balls thrown to him.
Gardner stats
The surprising part was that Coles was actually 2nd in the NFL with 8 drops. Coles has been thrown at 99 times and caught 55 balls though for a 55% success rate.
Coles stats
McCants... 3 drops... 36 passes thrown at... 20 catches... funnily, the exact same 55.6% success rate as Coles.
Not that these stats mean much. I just can't believe Gardner has only been tagged with 4 drops this year (don't think that included Sunday's game).
Mrs. Gardner must be the statistician.

Darnerien is the one....we need to play him more...throw to him more and let him develop into the player I know he can be. Besides he's also a great guy - class act - on and off the field.

Don't just look at Gardner...think of looking out into our secondary and seeing Mike Doss out there...full of potential. I'm not real sure where Jacobs is hiding, but he sure isn't out there on the field doing anything. I'm holding out hope that he'll develop into something nice...but I'd be willing to bet my tickets to the Jags/Bucs game that he won't have the impact Doss will. It's all hindsight anyways. Just frustrated, that's all...

Who's Mike Doss ? I can't believe living in the same house as Jake I've never heard of this person.

He's an outstanding rookie safety drafted by the Indianapolis Colts, which we if my memory serves me correctly passed up on to take Taylor Jacobs. Doss has already started to emerge as a factor in the Colts defense...I don't recall hearing Jacobs name but twice. Once while I was at the Jax/Skins game in preseason when he was injured at the end. And the second one was when Ramsey connected with him in the Dallas game.

Let him help
WR Darnerien McCants makes big plays, and he deserves more opportunitieseven if that means taking time away from Rod Gardner. McCants is big and fast, can get separation from defenders and has good hands. The team needs to find a way to take defensive pressure off WR Laveranues Coles, and McCants is a good option. He leads the team in touchdown receptions and seems capable of building on his 13.3 yards per catch.
C Lennie Friedman was a low-profile free-agent pickup who is making a significant contribution. He stepped in for Larry Moore and has done a good job of communicating with his fellow linemen and staying on his blocks, and he has been solid with his shotgun snaps.
The team can't win close, tough games because mistakes are made at crucial times. The offense's inability to capitalize on four turnovers was a significant factor in the loss to the Panthers. RB Trung Canidate is struggling. If coach Steve Spurrier is determined to man the position by committee, better members of that committee are Rock Cartwright, Chad Morton and Ladell Betts, when he comes back from his broken arm.
Addtional WR's

I agree with you that McCants shoud be getting more PT. But lets not look past Patrick Johnson far, either. I haven't exactly seen him log alot of field time, but have seen him make some clutch catches. He has sprinter speed, and being far down on the totem pole probably has a hell of a lot more desire to succeed than Gardner.

you guys know what all this boils down too...... we have a great wr corp. but since pass protection on this team is nothing but a MYTH at this point, seems like NONE of the receivers get open too often

I'm thinking that we should all chip in and send Rod a big 'ol tub of Stick-um, aka "The Replacements." Because hitting him in the hands alone isn't working. Lately he couldn't catch vd if he was the only female on an aircraft carrier.

It seems people on this board tend to turn on a guy pretty quick.
If you remember he dropped a lot of balls his rookie year, and personally I thought he did a terrific job of turning that around last year. With the exception of a game or two he seemed to catch everything and bring a toughness to his game.
Although I do love McCants. He is a beast. You do have to chalk up his superior TD numbers to gim being matched up against scrub CB's and Spurrier devising those plays for him(seems obvious he's always the number 1 guy in the red zone). But as I said, I really love the guy.

If that's the case, since Coles is blanketed on the other side, shouldn't Rod be as open on the other side? He's supposed to be our #2 guy, and he hasn't been playing like it.

you just straight up PIMP SLAPPED rod g....
as for rod being open...... he's not, he did better last year as a #1 being doubled..... go figure, when he is open(wide open) he gets so excited that, again, HE DROPS THE ROCK.......i bet if it were a crack rock you'd hold onto it now wouldn't you rod????

I don't understand the idea that we are just turning on him. I actually defended him against the McCants fans earlier, but the constant drops, not just once in a while but well over 55% of the balls thrown to him, make me feel that he is not the man to be considered our possession receiver. I don't believe he needs to be the go to guy when Coles is tightly covered, as is obviously the scheme. He is either too tightly wrapped and over concentrating on the catch to the point he is screwing himself up (a la the WR that we let go who went to New Orleans... I can't remember his name - flashes of brilliance) or he is thinking of nothing but the hit coming or the run after he catches the ball.
I think P-Ram is overzinging the balls, but why is it that PJ, DM, LC, and TJ can make the catches that our POSSESSION receiver (definition of the possession WR - the guy who makes the catch to keep possession going - not the speed burner who is the flash in the pan) can't seem to make?

BTW, I saw in the Post today that McCants has a knee injury! Any idea how serious it is?
"Wide receiver Darnerien McCants was on crutches yesterday and underwent an MRI exam on his knee, but Spurrier described the injury as a contusion."

a contusion sounds promising that it's nothing serious
