Jones: Testaverde could return as starter

Talk about the AFC, NFC, the NFL Draft, College Football... anything football that has no Washington Football Team relevance.

Jones: Testaverde could return as starter

By Jennifer Floyd Engel

Star-Telegram Staff Writer

IRVING - Vinny Testaverde said he is contemplating playing again next season.

Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said Friday it is possible that not only will the 41-year-old continue his career in a Cowboys uniform, but also as the starting quarterback.

"Yes, that is possible," Jones said, when asked if Testaverde could begin the 2005 season as the starter, with Drew Henson and possibly Tony Romo as the backups. "Obviously, there are a lot of circumstances at work there. But Vinny has been impressive. He has been everything that Bill sold him to me on, at least at this juncture."

Testaverde has started 10 of 11 games. On Thanksgiving Day, he replaced Henson in the second half and rallied the Cowboys to a 21-7 victory over Chicago.

The Cowboys (4-7) believe the addition of a potent running game with rookie Julius Jones has the potential to not only to make the offense more balanced, but the team more successful under Testaverde. The Cowboys still have a shot at being one of the NFC wild-card teams this season.

Testaverde, who signed a one-year, incentive-laden contract with the Cowboys in June, said he is not going to decide until after the season whether to play next season. But he admits he is tempted to return, be it as a starter or a backup, because he believes the Cowboys have championship potential.

"You would like to see what could happen with the team when it is all healthy, when it's all together, now that we have some young guys that have experience," Testaverde said.
