someone .... anyone please explain to me why in the heck on 3rd down our best offensive player is on the sideline ?? it makes NO sense to me at all !!!!
why in the heck if we are facing the worst rush defense in the N.F.L. did we start the game throwing the ball ???
the bengals i have to take my hat off to ..because they out played us and played with passion and acted like they wanted to win.

Play calling was a bust yesterday and I would have run on 3rd and 1.

We were averaging almost 5 yards a carry.

There must have been something that looked right to call a pass play when Portis was running so well. I too wonder why we did not just run at them until they stopped us or hedged too much and got burned by the pass.

That's because there is no logical answer.

Yesterday I must have written 20 posts asking why we didn't run more. Portis was averaging over 5yds/carry until his last run. I also don't understand why he comes out EVERY 3rd down. Betts has been pretty useless this year as well. Yes, I understand Betts is the 3rd down back but maybe this is why our 3rd down conversion rate is so bad.

Just wanted to point out one more fact. Yesterday Ben Roethlesburger and Michael Vick only threw 16 passes in the games that they won handily. Both are infinately better QBs than either of our guys.

Then why do we have Brunell throwing on something like 6 of our first 8 plays and throw 46 times in the game and only rush 17 times (there were 3 QB sneaks so technically we ran 20 times)! This makes no sense!

Running the ball successfully also ensures that your D is not on the field non-stop and you won't find your team down 17 after 20 minutes. This was a terrible game plan! I thought we had finally learned against Detroit and Chicago that if we keep running and don't throw the ball we can win so why don't we do that against THE WORST RUN D IN THE NFL!!! Every game this year the play calling and clock management has left me scratching my head, sort it out guys! I'm still really pissed off!

Portis has sat on many 3rd downs this season. It is in an effort to keep him fresh for the whole game and the whole season. Betts is a good change of pace with his size. He can also catch the ball out of the backfield, and no one expects us to run the ball with Portis on the sideline, so the occasional 3rd down run by Betts is typically successful.

Yes that is all true but I just think that with our woeful 3rd down conversion rate we should use him a little more. I don't understand why the coaches keep insisting on trying to win the game without using our best player.

I want to see Betts getting the ball more on first and second down. Get Cartwright in there too! Those guys can play, they've shown it in the past. Switch it up a little, use all our backs and keep running the ball! Betts is a good change of pace. Both these guys are power runners and they can pound the ball. The D will get tired and we can keep Portis fresh and use him on important plays. He will also be more effective with those other guys rushing too. I think D-Mac showed us and the coaches this week that we have more guys on the roster who can contribute offensively. So why don't we use them as long as they are active. I would like to see those guys used a lot more.

thats pretty lame ...he does not get enough touches as it is and he is the best offensive player on the field right ???? saving him for what ??? 3-6 what is joe saving him for ???

putting in second string backs in 3rd down situations aren't all that rare, cause mainly they're passing downs so u should give portis a rest, its no big deal. I'm just afraid betts isn't a typical third down type back ,he's not a shifty pass catching back, i think cartright would be a much better 3rd down guy. I also think cartright blocks better than betts does (remember ed reed incident)

I'm not too sure why we didn't run more on cincy. They did stop portis on his firt 3 or 4 runs but then we just totally went away from him. I think that's what hurt us a lot because the game was put in brunell hands and he made 3 and out the norm, meaning the defense had to go out there a lot and it got tired, thus the 17 point advantage.
