Ray

Post by Kentucky Fried Hog »

The wife and I just got back from the movie theater, we saw Ray. I thought it was great. I never was a huge fan of Ray Charles' music and didn't know anything about his personal life. After watching this movie, I now have a better appreciation for his music and life struggles. Jamie Fox was outstanding, he surely will win an Oscar for his performance. Has anyone else here seen the movie? What did you think?

My wife and I just got home from seeing Ray.

Great movie. Theater was packed, but people almost seemed to hold their breath...no talking, whispering. Applause at the end, as if the movie makers could here us.

Definitely: go see it.

Jamie Fox is great. About 3/4 through the movie, Ray Charles takes off the glasses and you see the face of Jamie Fox. I suddenly thought, had to remind myself: hey, this is not Ray Charles on screen...this is an actor...

I thought you meant Ray Lewis. I came in all ready to say, "Big Whoop ! Who cares ?"
Now, I guess I'm gonna have to go see the movie. Not as a Ray Charles fan, though.
More of a Foxx fan. :)

I'm really looking forward to see this movie. As a musician, I can't wait to see the behind-the-scenes look at this genius....and I can't wait to hear the music.

I agree. For those who saw the movie, was the music--and good representations of it--just all over this thing? (It might sound like a dumb question but I can't think of how to phrase it, exactly. . .)

I probably won't get to see this movie until it comes out on video, but I am looking forward to seeing it.

I'm a little taken aback to hear people say they aren't fans of Ray's music though. Maybe it's because I'm a musician that I feel some kind of connection to his music, but I think his records have stood the test of time.

This is a man who created a genre of music half a century ago, and then still managed to be the voice of our nation with his recording of America the Beautiful which was played so much after 9/11.

If Jamie Fox doesn't win an award for his performance, there will be a riot. Not ONCE during the course of the movie did I think I was looking at Jamie Fox... The movie was simply incredible and I felt myself caring for each of the characters. Nobody knows your struggle like you do and to see what he went through made me reflect on my life.

I'm not sure I'm answering the question that you asked, but the movie is saturated with the music. The original music, Ray Charles, various Raylettes, Lowell Fulsom, all from the recordings. The actors convince you that they really are singing -- like the woman scolding Charles in "Hit the Road, Jack!".

Also talks about the music, the influences, the ideas that Ray Charles has...what he's aiming for each time he takes the music a different direction.
