RIP - Kirby (my dog)

My dog, Kirby, passed away this morning... He's was our child substitute so we will miss him big time! We found out 3 weeks ago he had cancer and it was effecting his heart. I guess his heart couldn't hold up. He was young, only 6 1/2, and always a bundle of energy so it was tough to see him decline so quickly. Fortunately, he died peacefully...
Anyways, VERY sad day for us. I said on another pet related post I'll try and post a picture.
He was an amazing dog... RIP

I'm very sorry to hear that, man. I have a dog myself and it will tear my heart out when he passes away.
Dogs are the most loyal friends anyone could ask for.
I feel your pain. At least he's in a better place now.
RIP Kirby

Wow. Sometimes, I think that's harder to handle than losing a bi-ped friend.
Sorry, '74.
How'd you get the name "Kirby" for him ?

I am so very sorry to hear that Kirby has passed on, R74. Please know my thoughts are with you and your family. Our canine friends sure do become family members; the void is very real when they are no longer beside us. Take comfort knowing you gave him a wonderful and loving home; and he gave you the unconditional love for all things pure and simple.

Thanks all - We truly appreciate it. Very tough!
TC - We got Kirby from lab rescue league so he actually came with the name. If you knew him, it totally suited him... We originally laughed about his name for a dog but like I said -perfect for him.
ANyways, many thanks... His Redskins Collar is hanging on our front door today.
He was their number one fan

I know how bad you feel.
Look, it is not time yet but sometime down the line, there is one wonderful creature out there waiting for you...
It will never replace your loss. It will simply ocupy a nw place. Think about it. It is incredible how a new love helps handle a past loss.
Surprise your wife...
I did surprise mine with avisit to the local animal shelter and I had already identified ONE. She did not want to know anything about it but when they met...
Love at first sight. A new chapter.
Think about it for the future.

Kudos to you, '74 , for going that route and getting a dog from the shelter. You never really know what you're getting until a few weeks later. It sounds like Kirby was well-appreciated, and that's really all a dog wants from the people he owns.
My wife has this little sign hanging up in our dining room.
"I hope I can one day be half the person my dog thinks I am."
True, that.

Oh wow...I'm so sorry 1974. That's a horrible loss. Pets are people too (members of our families) and it's a hard loss to take. I agree that later you should check out the shelters again. My dad adopted a 3 legged dog after his dog died and he was his best friend for a long time. Never took the other dog's place...but helped heal some of the pain.

R74- My deepest sympathies. I've always had pets, cats and dogs. Loosing them is never easy. People who don't have them can't understand sometimes. We just got a Lab mix from mongtomery county humane socety in Rockville just about 6 months ago. (to go along w/ our 4 cats! It is amazing how quickly they touch your heart.
Listen to ramseychick she is right about the rainbow bridge. I'll post it for those of you unfamilliar: PS- get out the tissues.

Rainbow Bridge
Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.
When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge.
There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together.
There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.
All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor; those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by.
The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.
They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent; His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.
You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.
Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....

Everytime I read that again it always makes me a little sad and yet content knowing in my heart I will see my pets again. I have complete faith that animals go to heaven also. I think it evenhints at it in the bible that animals go to their own special place.Rainbow Bridge is a very good support group also. I willbe thinking of you both.

Way to make me tear up at work! In all seriousness, thank you. I got the call today that he was picked up from the vet and I had to take care of the arrangements. It fully hit us yesterday when we got back to our normal work routine. Getting up in the morning and not having to walk him or him jumping in bed as soon as my wife got up was tough. Coming home to an empty, quiet house was very weird. Anyways, thank you - he was an awesome dog and as some of you mentioned, they are like people to pet owners and some people don't get that but it's so true. I'm having trouble with my website so I haven't been able to post any pictures.
Thanks for all the love! You guys are great.

I would love to see photos of kirby when you get time. Pets are like family and it took me long time to heal but the only thing that makes me smile is that I know my cat
is happy now and I will see her again. If you ever need anyone to talk to about it just message me. I hope everything works out for you.

I have two dogs. I can't imagine losing them. I can't even think about it. That is going to be a horrible day when that happens. I don't look at them as dogs. I look at them as my kids.

Hi all,
This is Mrs.1974 thank you so much for the Kirby love. Mike and I appreciate it during these hard times. I gotta admit it's tough losing a loved one. He was the best dog and he loved watching skins games on t.v. Seriously, he loved watching t.v. and watching the ball sail across the screen. So I gotta say, the skins have to beat philly for the memory of our boy and they have to beat philly's ass because I can't stand philly and neither did our boy Kirby.
Much love to all,
Mrs. 1974
