from the post:Deadline day for extensions
Today is the final day for teams to sign players to contract extensions and have the new deals count partially against this season's salary cap.
Any one know if were close to getting his deal done?

I'm not sure, but do we have any cap room to make use of this?

According to the Post at the end of last week, they were making good progress on contract talks. There's a thread around here somewhere about it...

I read this morning only about $1,000,000, but that something was better than nothing. However, the negoiations aren't any where near where they need, to be to get a deal done today.

If anything, I don't think that will happen. I can't see Brees playing for the 'Skins. It's already bad enough that we had another crappy San Diego quarterback play for us years ago by the name of John Freisz.

Brees isn't coming, and we must stop overpaying for players. Look at the Pats and how they are a true TEAM. Gibbs will get us back to that. And signing Smoot for a reasonable long term deal is a good way to start.

How did we go from a pro bowl Cornerback's contract talks to talking about Drew Brees. Gibbs talks highly of Ramsey, for what it's worth, so I think he knows that he can play well in this system. He said last night on Sportstalk 980, "We don't know what Patrick's capable of. We haven't seen him since the preseason, he hasn't gotten into any games."
He must have forgotten the half he played against the New York Giants, but regardless that means some part of Gibbs is itching to see Ramsey.
As far as the topic, Smoot'll re-sign eventually, whether its now or this offseason. He wants to run for office in D.C. and he doesn't want to go anywhere.

He probably doesn't look to that as a fair assessment of his ability to run the offense. I don't count that as a true shot to run the offense either. He basically was put into a situation where he had no choice but to put the ball up and everyone knew it.
If P-Ram was given the chance to start and run a balanced attack, then I would say that game was a true assessment of his progress. I will say this though, while I am one who thinks the best thing for the Redskins and Ramsey is to let him continue to watch the things Brunell CAN do right (a.k.a not get sacked), I do think he moved the ball well in the game, and as I said then, if Gardner makes the catch for the easy TD, the skins win that Giants game.
For Smootie, I hope he stays. He is an excellent player. He plays with heart and determination and plays hurt in an effort to be a connsumate teammate. If he isn't a core Redskin by Coach Gibbs' definition, than I don't know who is.
