Champ and Lavar...How can this be??

This whole ST thing just got me to thinking…The Skins keep bringing in these high profile high priced players and they continue to be self serving.(not as bad this year) I find it so ironic that for the last year we have debated how much Lavar and Champ do/don’t help the team, yet here we are 7 games into the season without Lavar or Champ and our defense is ranked #1 how can this be??

Because we have some good “lunch pale guys” like Smoot, Springs, Washington, Daniels, Griffin and Bowen. (that what I believe)
I hope Joe Gibbs continues to scrub the roster and bring in “character guys” One only has to look at what the Pats are doing w/o any real superstars. I am amazed that they continue to win the way they do, they are the epitome of a Team!

Great post...
... and very true.
Proof positive that there is no 'I' in 'team'.

There ain't no "we" either!

(I love those "Leon" commercials.)
Sorry. Just had to say that.
I agree with DEHog 100%. The defense on this team has a lot of low profile performers that we should all be proud of. It also doesn't hurt that (I think) we have one of the best defensive coordinators in the game working for us.

It's also great that our defense has been performing this well because most 'expert' NFL analysts thought that we couldn't have a functioning secondary without Champ, and that losing Lavar would cripple us. I don't think that those same analysts will be calling Snyder a smart owner any time soon for bringing in the blue collar guys, but it seems like that is the direction that we're taking with Gibbs.
I agree with you, DEHog, and I hope that ST makes a transformation through these early struggles. Smoot went from "covering 25% of the globe" to just doing his job, and he's never been better. In fact, he's become many people's favorite Skin--and there is no reason why Sean Taylor can't be just as much of a beast, if he wants it.

another example of a "team" are the Detriot Pistons (NBA). They were a whole bunch of no-bodys and came out and destroyed the 4 Hall of Famer Lakers.

There is not an I in team, but there is still an 'M & E.'
The scheme and the coach are why. Remember when Marvin Lewis was here and we were ranked within the top ten on Defense.
Look at teams with playmakers on them. We are ranked better than they are.
The scheme of things;

who has been brought in this year that has been "self-serving"?? actually they got rid of one... champ.. as for taylor, they drafted him and while VERY, VERY, VERY, disappointing, it is yet to be seen if he is truly "self-serving". the reason i posted was, i couldnt understand why you mention lavar? the guy has been hurt and otherwise been a great teammate... i agree that the team has alot of good character guys but don't group lavar into that self-serving category. no one has been brought in this year that has been high-priced and self-serving... sorry i don't agree with you there... just my opinion.

What a great article. Here's my favorite paragraph:
Unlike the Cowboys, the Redskins have two good coverage cornerbacks -- Shawn Springs and Fred Smoot. Williams' blitzing scheme covers up for some personnel weakness. The Redskins have the league's No. 1 ranked defense, allowing 234.2 yards and only 15.8 points a game. They've survived not having their best defender, linebacker LaVar Arrington, for more than a month. They've survived not having the greatest front four in football.
Add to that the loss of Bowen, who had the makings of being a monster blitzer from the safety position, and some of those injuries on the front four; and to me Greg Williams becomes all the more a genius. I like him a lot better than when we had Marvin Lewis--because everyone knew that Lewis would be gone after only one season. In my opinion Williams will at least be around for next season, and he will train a good replacement so that the system doesn't change. It feels a lot more stable to me.
Clayton also makes a great point about rushing offenses flourishing because of the new style of defense. The weakening of the running game in the NFL that occured during the 90's due to rule changes and successes of teams like the Packers, 49ers, and later on the Rams I think contributed most to the rise of blitzing and agressive defenses. Even with the new rule emphasis, which everyone assumed would lead to Madden Football style hail mary's all the time, there is no better way to cut deep into a defense than a good draw/delay play. Makes you wonder why Norv isn't doing a bit better over there in Oakland, since the draw was his bread and butter. . .

It seems to me that we need a general manager. Then we would have a chance to get some good young players and not try to sign over the hill has beens.

We're like the Patriots or something on defense this year, aren't we?

I mean,we're efficient,and we're doing it without hot dogs.

Great post DE and completely true
I wouldn't call Lavar self-serving because he as always gotten what he's asked for (with the exception of proper representation from his agents) Champ would have fit in great here this year but then we would have guys like Washington, Springs and Griffin. So I say best of luck to him in Mile High.
The best part of this is... that it is happening I Gibb's first year and not even Joe can stock a whole roster with the number of “character guys” that he wants. Most of those that are stepping up are guys that were already here and waiting for a chance to shine.

I did preference it by saying not so much this past year. I was speaking to guys like Sanders, B. Smith, George, Stubblefield and Trotter. As for Lavar he is the most “freelancing” player on the team. I would hope that would stop under Williams.
As for ST it’s a little to early to tell, I’m not going to condemn anyone…who am I to judge another man? I will say this…The most powerful force in the universe is the power of choice, ST made a bad one, nothing more nothing less. The decision to NOT drink and drive has to come before you get in your car and before you take one sip! How ST rebounds from this will show us what kind of man he is. He has another choice to make…He can stand up and face this like a man or he can take a victims mentality and not take reasonability for his actions. If he does the latter he will not be a Redskin for long, he will view the whole city as against him and run to another team. Step up ST show us your as tough off the field as on!

We will see tomorrow, how good this Defense is, without our big time play makers(Lavar & Barrow).

Then we should already know how good the #1 defense is..
Lavar hasn't played in a month..
Barrow has yet to play

We will face the #2 offence tomorrow. I hope that we sustain the tempo.
We all know how Brett plays when he is hurt.

See this game is a prime example of what I am talking about.
We need more playmakers.
Lavar would have hawked down Green on that pass out of the backfield.
I cant wait until Lavar gets back.

Well...
Position - Patriots - Redskins
MLB - Tedy Bruschi - Antonio Pierce
DEs - Ty Warren, Richard Seymour - Daniels, Wynn
#1 CB - Ty Law - Smoot, Springs
SS - Rodney Harrison - Ryan Clark
No offense, but I hate hearing the Patriots have no big time defenders crap. Name one quality player we had on defense today out of our CBs. We have absolute
crap on defense as of right now.

Cornelius Griffin - Maybe.
Joe Salave'a - No way.
Antonio Pierce - Iffy.
Marcus Washington - Can't believe I forgot to mention him.
