Steve Spurrier placed a call to Ralph Friedgen last week to offer three words of advice to the Maryland coach: "Hang in there."

Spurrier went through tough times as coach of the Washington Redskins the past couple of years. Friedgen said Spurrier also said: "Ralph, for three years it's bounced your way. You're going through a bad streak right now."

Friedgen is enduring his most difficult season at Maryland. His team is 3-4 and is expected to be the underdog in at least three of its remaining four games. His offense has performed like one of the nation's worst the past three weeks. Spurrier told Friedgen that when he struggled running the ball, he would run a draw play.

Friedgen said Spurrier seemed happy playing golf and did not know whether Spurrier would return to the college ranks next season. Spurrier reportedly is considering returning to the University of Florida, where he won a national title and became one of the most successful coaches in the country. Florida fired Ron Zook earlier this week but has allowed him to finish out the season with the team.

"It seems like a logical move," Friedgen said of Spurrier's possible return to Florida. "But sometimes it's tough to go back to where you've been."
