#1 Defense and Pierce

Hail to the Redskins. We now have the #1 defense in the NFL, after Champ's disatrous play last night. Our defense isn't filled with superstars, considering Arrington and Barrow are out, but it is fueled with an incredible, unwaivering fire. I want to highlight two incredible players. I think Cornelius Griffin has played ridiculously well for us, compiling 48 tackles and 2 (backtoback) sacks. He is a big run stopper and is a crucial part of our top-rated defense. Also, Antonio Pierce has made Barrow's injury seem invisible, leading the team in tackles and being always around the ball. I love this guy, but what of Barrow?
What happens when Barrow comes back? Does Pierce disapear?

Pierce isn't going to dissapear under any circumstance. Greg Williams' defense is such that everyone will be utilized, some more so than others. But, the ones that are the cream of the crop will see a lot of playing time regardless of whether or not they were on the field for the very first play. Also, look out for Sean Taylor over the next few weeks. Williams is starting to figure out how to use him, and Taylor should fit right in with it. Taylor is gradually going to shine more and more with each game. MARK MY WORDS!

Looks like Barrow is out again for Green Bay. It's time to shelve him for the year and let someone in that can make a difference on Special teams.

That's what I think. We've found some great young talent in Antonio Pierce. Forget Barrow for this year. (I might be eating my words when Barrow comes back and just plain dominates. . . )

Those are the kinds of words that I really wouldn't mind eating so long as it really happened. Kind of like saying at the beginning of the year "Yeah, I don't think we can realistically expect to win the Superbowl this year"--I'd say that a hundred years in a row if it would mean that I was wrong every time.

I think Gibbs focuses on one at a time. This season he worked on the defense. Next season, the offense.

Yes, one offensive -player- at a time during the week until he feels he has addressed our needs. I am very interested to see what happend out of the work conducyted by the coaches over the last two weeks. Two players are out and two new ones are in.
This season he worked on the defense. Next season, the offense.
Next season better start right this Sunday because Joe does not do much defense AT ALL!

JP Fair you are right Taylor has been playing better and better each week and I did hear that Gregg Williams and the rest of the coaching staff has been very pleased with his progress! Antonio Pierce is our most underrated player! That guy just keeps playing great and making great plays! He defintely should remain a starter even if Barrow comes back! Pierce is finally showing off all his talent!

Um, we only went up in the defensive standings because we didn't allow any yards this weekend, because we didn't play.
Too early in the season for these kinds of rankings to mean much...

I disagree. After 2 or 3 weeks they aren't terribly relevant, but as long as you take them with a grain of salt 6 weeks worth of stats can say a few things. Who would disagree that the Redskins have one of the top rated defenses, regardless of whether or not we've already had a bye week? At this point in the season, about 1/3 of the teams should have had theirs also.

But, to run around proclaiming the number 1 defense when:
a) we had a bye this week
b) we haven't played very good teams
c) we have a losing record
Just doesn't sit right with me. Also, I don't think six games is enough of a sample to make difinitive statements. I really think you need to get past the halfway point, at the earliest. And really, you can't make too much of things until the final whistle of the season.
At any rate, I'd trade the week-six number one defensive rating for the lead spot in the NFC East.

Our defense is right where it belongs, regardless of our record. It's not their fault that Brunell is a total waste of time and $$.
If it weren't for them, we wouldn't even have the record that we do. We'd be 0-6.

I think that "if" Barrow is healthy we should still stick with Pierce. Yeah, I know Barrow is the "Star" and gets the big bucks, but Pierce is in a groove. Remember he did stay with the Redskins during the restricted free agent period. I think he is a "core Redskin". Barrow is also getting old. Pierce is going to have a great career at this rate.

Barrow is wasting a roster spot. Deactivate him and bring in McCants for god's sake.

You know, I would love to be stomping around the NFC east. That would be the greatest. However, I was basing the #1 defense remark on something different than you were probably thinking. I based it on allowed yards per game
on average. Meaning that the fact that the skins had a bye week doesn't mean much to the fact that the skins are the #1 defense on average. They are extremely good. I know that you think that cville. I wouldn't discredit that defense for the reason that the team is 2-4. They have played the best they have played for a while(I love Greg!).

This should get everyone attention that Gibbs mean business. I bet the offense will play MUCH better this week. Plus the week off doesn't hurt any.
