FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. -- University of Arkansas running back Peyton Hillis suffered fractures to three small bones that protrude from vertebrae in his lower back during the Razorbacks' loss to Florida and could be out for the rest of the season, team doctors said Sunday.
Hillis took a facemask to the back during the second quarter of Saturday's 45-30 loss at The Swamp in Gainesville.
A freshman out of Conway High School, Hillis has shown a deftness with the ball in short-yardage situations and has made some spectacular catches.
The injury did not damage the spinal cord abd did not involve a fracture of the vertebrae. Arkansas trainer Dean Weber said the injury should not threaten Hillis' ability to play again.
Coach Houston Nutt said Hillis cannot take a redshirt or get a medical waiver. Hillis could be back by the last couple of games of the season, but coaches have to watch how well he is healing, Nutt said.
