Packers deal CB McKenzie to Saints

GREEN BAY, Wis. (Oct. 4, 2004) -- The Green Bay Packers traded disgruntled cornerback Mike McKenzie to the New Orleans Saints for a second-round pick and a backup quarterback.
The Packers acquired quarterback J.T. O'Sullivan, 25, and the second-round selection in the 2005 draft in return for McKenzie, 28, and a future conditional draft choice.
The Packers have been interested in O'Sullivan since the Saints took him in the sixth round of the 2002 draft out of Cal-Davis.
The deal is the Packers' first midseason trade in 23 years involving active players from both teams.
McKenzie, in his sixth NFL season, has been a starter at left cornerback for Green Bay since his rookie year. He has 15 career interceptions. McKenzie held out through training camp, then came back and played in one game, a loss at Chicago in Week 2.
He comes off one of his most productive seasons with four interceptions, 58 tackles (55 solo) and 20 passes defensed. He had a 90-yard interception return for a touchdown against Chicago last year.

You've got to think about the Packers and quarterbacks.. just look at how many guy they've drafted and now are starters with other teams.

Do you think that the sheen of free agency is wearing off after all these years, and teams are returning to more conventional approaches to managing talent? (Not that free agency doesn't play a part, obviously, but it is only a PART, not the whole kit-and-caboodle.)

maybe its just me, but i think that the Packers got hosed in this trade,
sure they need to play to their strengths and start worryin about a qb for the future, but who is this guy? couldn't they better prepare for the draft? ehh.. whatever, looks like their happy enough with their decision, considering they signed the dotted line

Like the article says, the Pack have been interested in this guy for 2 years.
If my memory serves me correctly, J.T. O'Sullivan was in NFL Europe and did very well this year. I think he did well in the preseason for N.O., too. I think the Pack may have a good QB on their team.
Lord knows they won't go out and sign guys like Akili Smith and Tim Couch on the free agent market again.

I really can't see it wearing off anytime soon, in the next couple of years. I think this year just had an ungodly amount of trades in years.
