One thing that stood out to me last night was the lack of the big bruising back who would always get those 1 yard touchdown runs on the first try. it seems to me that portis is too small to fill that role. i wouldn't be surprised to see the skins pick up a free agent or draft pick next year to do exactly that, a la gerald riggs in '91 (78 carries, 248 yards, a 3.2 average........11 tds).

I think Rock would have been quite useful last night myself.

Portis got goaline carries in Denver, he is actually very good at short yardage. He uses his size to his advantage and quickly gets through small holes.

However, a short yard gain depends more on the line than the runner. And last night the line was not exploding...and they gave up a lot of sacks. If you have a great line then ANY running back can get short yardage, but if you dont then they'll get stuffed. (I saw Jamal Lewis get stuffed in week one when Ogden was out).

Portis is fine. Betts could help out. Rock fumbles in short yardage situations if you remember.

i guess i disagree. in the absence of a killer line, you need a big back to push the pile. i don't think portis is big enough to do that. bounce outside, sure, but not through the bodies.

Joe, trust me Portis was an everydown back in Denver. Have you seen him play the last 2 years? He did not come out in short yardage situations and he did fine.

In his rookie year Mike Anderson took a few goal line carries from Portis until Shanahan realized that Portis could do the job.

He will continue to do so here. Buges needs to get the line in shape, they have been decent but not great. Ray Brown is a reserve, dont know why he is starting.

No, Gibbs just deactivated him because there are too many H-Backs on the roster. I do agree that he should have been in there, though.

By pile do you mean the 6 defensive players that are walking over the offensive line?

yes, that's the pile i'm speaking of.

oafsup, i know portis is an every-down back, and i know he's been successful in goalline situations before. thsi is not a vote of no confidence in him. but the guy is on the small side. i'm just saying i wouldn't mind seeing someone with a bit more beef back there, someone who can meet a dlineman at the 1 and dance with him into the endzone. i don't think portis can do that.

The problem is all of the above. A better line surge is no doubt necessary. A bigger back would be a plus. What no one has said so far is this: why only a single back formation. Where is the leading blocker a la Otis Wonsley. THAT was one of the reasons we were so successful in the early eighties at the goal line.

Most of your views about Portis will change -after- nextSunday's game. I expect him to put a running show to win you all back and put him back in your hearts.

thats just my opinion.

the line gets NO push. first and 1 on the 1 is a GIMMIE. maybe buges didn't name them the hogs, and called em dirtbags, because he saw something.... a lack in effort. there is no excuse for the play of the line, call it the goal line back if you want.

I agree with you bagadoughnuts with Riggs because we remember how the Skins did the next year after we let him go.

My question is what ever happened to "jumbo" on the goal line?

I like what the Raiders did with bringing in Sapp as a blocker for some added muscle.

We did alot better running in short yardage when we actually brought in three wide recievers and spread out the field because Portis can make his own holes.
