It seems to me that Peter Angelos is making a huge mistake taking such a strong stand against DC baseball.

I used to be a big O's fan but his handling of the franchise over the past 5 years has really soured me on them and I rarely go anymore.

His vehement objections to bringing a team to DC have only made me dislike him even more.

I suspect others feel the same way.

If he wasn't such a jerk I would have no problem supporting both teams. Now I think I will ONLY support a DC team.

I'm pretty much with you on that one man. Angelos has really pissed me off since around '97 and more so in the past few years with his objections to DC. He's a bum. I grew up watching/going to the O's but have always been more of a fan of the National League. I hope it happens!

Who's going to own this D.C. team?

If DC wins it, Fred Malek of Thayer Capital Partners, with Vernon Jordon, Darryl Green's in the ownership group and a bunch of local big wigs and athletes. It's an extremely weathly and influential group. If VA wins, it most definitley will be Bill Collins, another wealthy group.

For Angelos, not having a team in D.C. gives him an out so that he doesn't have to field a playoff-contending team and still rake in the bucks that come from being the only big boy on the block.

As I posted elsewhere, I was big-time Senators before I was big-time Redskins. If this breaks as it looks like it will, I will be as emotional as I was they day Gibbs came back.

It's all about the TV market.

At least, for all other sports, at all levels, it is. I'm not sure why Angelos thinks baseball is any different in that respect.

The 'skins used to be the only NFL team in the south, and ruled the airways as far as they eye could see. Now there are many other NFL teams in the old Redskins Market, and the Redskins is still the most valuable franchise in the NFL. Maybe someone should point this out to Angelos?

I'm pretty sure it's been raised but his response has been that football has many less games therefore you can't compare the two. Lame answer if you ask me!

Two different cities. Angelos should have no say in the matter. If he had any sense, he would have welcomed another American League team to DC -- best of all would have been the Twins, whgen they were spiralling a couple of years ago.

The Baltimore Orioles have no natural rivals. The Red Sox and Yankees always battle, and their games against each other always sell out. But Baltimore?

He could have had the BW Parkway series, the local rivalry, fans from both places at both games. But no. Bush league owner and bush league organization. They always have been.

The Orioles will always belong to Baltimore -- not Washington -- in the same way that people from Baltimore never leaped to follow the Redskins during the Colts-Browns(Ravens) interregnum.

I already have my autographed Harmon Killebrew jersey...I'm ready for a genuine opening day...a last ride for RFK Stadium.

I don't know which area I think would be more suitable for the team... I'd like to see another Washington team... I heard rumors, maybe it was going to be called the "Washington Greys," as kind of a tribute to the old negro leagues. But, that's only rumor so far...

Part of me says VA
Part of me says D.C.

The problem with Virginia is the stadium proposal is at the intersection of two major arteries, route's 28 and the toll road, near Dulles airport. My parents live there and it takes me the same time to travel there on a night after work from DC than it does to Baltimore. Baltimore is approximately 40 miles from the proposed site and the VA stadium proposal is almost 22 miles from DC and it takes the same time in traffic!... with no metro for another 12 years at least. It's a traffic nightmare waiting to happen in VA. If they were able to work out a site in Arlington or near metro, I'd be for it but they lost my interest with this Dulles proposal... too far, too much traffic and too many things to build (there's NOTHING in the general vacinity).

NoVa traffic is miserable. That's why I moved to Charlottesville. And, a stadium would only make it worse, like you guys have mentioned.

Besides, even if the stadium was in Dulles, the cut-away shots during broadcasts would should the monuments in D.C. and the White House and Capitol. It would still be seen as "D.C.'s team" so why not put it there!

Exactly. It looks like it's going to go to D.C., which I think is ultimately better.

The Nationals should be in a central location, someplace with a Metro stop.

It makes no sense to put a baseball team -- playing games every night -- out on the periphery of the area.

This has been talked over a dozen times in Nats News, the newsletter of the Washington Baseball Historical Society (note sneaky excuse to mention WBHS), and on the website devoted to bringing back baseball. Always the same conclusion: The transportation doesn't work unless the team is downtown.

(Even without considering the torture on I66 and the Beltway every rush hour.)

I hate to be a dick about this but the phrase isn't "cutting off his nose DESPITE his face." It is "cutting off his nose TO SPITE his face."

I think agelos has a valid point, without the revenue from dc fans how do they expect to stay 22 games out of first place every season.

The Baltimore Orioles can follow Pittsburgh's treatment of Ralph Kiner in 1951 or so.

Kiner had led the NL in homreruns for 5 or more years in a row; they offered him a salary cut.

"What is is?" asked Ralph. "I was the only hitter on the team!"

"Yeah???" said management. "We finished last. Without you, we still would have finished last".

I read that lee mizzilli(Sp?) said that he thinks the orioles should switch to the national league and the dc team join the AL East. HAHA thats funny, I think he realizes they'll never compete against the Yankees and Redsox.

A friend told me that the franchise was awarded to DC today - true? I hope so, it would help the community and draw the line on Angelos.

the annnouncement is suppose to become offical on thursday. I can't wait. I guess angelos will have to hire the kissing bandit or something to get us to see the orioles finish below 500 for their 8th staight season next year.
