Is the Redskins' name racist?

Wilbon spoke on this issue during his chat session on the Post site. I've always thought the name should be considered a tribute to the strength, honor and courage of the Native Americans. He wrote that most Native Americans have no problem with Chiefs, Braves, Seminoles, Warriors type names but are in fact offended by Redskins. It made me think about it and I'm curious what others think. Truthfully his argumant made sense to me once I thought about it.

Welcome to the boards... all the way from Venezuela!

I don't think it's racist. MANY Native Americans have been asked about this issue and either don't care or don't take offense to it. Most of the people that have issue with the name and logo are either white or black, not Native American, which doesn't make much sense.

The issue that people have with the logo is just stupid. IMO, the Redskins logo best represent Native Americans in a respectable fashion. The most offensive one I have seen is the Cleveland Indians logo. "Chief Wahoo" looks like something from a Staurday morning cartoon or a Crest commercial.

No one uses it as a derrogatory term, so it's only racist if people let it be racist...

Well the people surveyed in no way can reflect the feelings of an entire nation of people. I can see where it may be offensive, and probally is offensive to people.

I don't really know what to say other than that if the parties who find it offensive feel strongly about then they need to raise their voices.

To those who just need something to do and dont have a life and want to raise heck over this situation just for the sake of it, then they need to go sit down.

Thanks guys. And Chris Luva Luva thank you. Thats kinda how I feel about it. The folks who might be offended need to raise the issue. The powers that be need just respond with an open mind.

This one is probably better left to another forum, Wilbon's answer to the question prompted my interest and I happened to have found this site yesterday while searching for a place to get up to the minute info on the game. I'm FAR from a place to catch Redkins games or radio broadcasts....

Man kill this!!! Only thing we are concerned about is our players catching and our QBs not throwing INTs. If we were winning, this would be a non-issue.

As part Native-American (grandmother is half Cherokee) it is IMO not RACIST. My family is full of Redskin fans.

Now the Cleveland Indians masscot could be considered racist.

But, they are just symbols of a sports team.

To people who have a problem with them. Get over it.

There are more important things in this world that need to be addressed.

Sports team masscot's are not one of them.

It is not racist unless you consider being native american to be inherently negative. Why can you call whites white and blacks black and not reds red? None of these other races' skin pigmentation actually matches the name given them either.

Is it wrong that I laughed at the unintended pun there?

This "racist" label has been pushed too far on too many levels. I think any true Indian would be honored to have a Pro team in any sport recognize their importance in our history. The word "redskin" is the same as calling white people "cocassions". I don't see it as slandering such as the "N" word or the term "wetback". People need to stop finding things to nag about just for the sake of nagging.

Good post....and I agree. This is more politically correct b.s. that needs to be canned for more productive issues.

If someone walked into a room of mixed company and used the "N" word, he would be kicked out of the room (and probably injured in the process).

If someone walked into a room of mixed company and tried to use the term redskin in a derogatory manner, he would be LAUGHED out of the room!

You and I (and the rest of the blokes on here) can't do anything to fix our teams actual short-comings. All we can do is kill time between games. :)

I'm going to rant for a second. I live in Los Angeles and I am so tired of people being Politically Correct. Dont say this b/c so and so might get offended and dont say that either. You know what, if we're all that uptight then i'm moving to Canada where no one has an opinion. Redskins the name and the fight song talk about a successful warrior he is and to keep fighting on. Thats all it is. How racist are we but we have an African America mascot playing the "Redskin." Is the NWACP going to be on our back now. I'm supprised that's never been brought up. And then you've got the mascot for FSU. He's white with make-up. What organization wants to step in and 100% white person, no your talking to someone who is born bread in east coast NC and 1/2 native american. We, atleast my family are all die hare skins fans and thats b/c we love the team, not the name. And, we dont take any offense to it. The people who were suing for it were just looking for a profit and all the attorney's were white. Interesting.

tick..............tick..............tick..........

and you're wrong about the 'can't do anything to fix our team's shortcomings' part. i know that if i root hard enough, wear the right combination of redskins attire, and perform the ritual chicken sacrifice properly, they'll play well.
