I used to pay $9.95/month for dial-up. Slow slow slow slow slow.
I now pay around $55.00/month for a cable internet connection. In my opinion, it's worth every penny because I spend a lot of time on the 'Net due to (1) thehogs.net, (2) doing legal research, and (3) doing financial stuff.
If you spend a lot of time on the 'net, it's worth the extra money. If not, I'd stick with dial up.

I'm with JH on this. Also, if you need/require a second line in order to use dial-up, it may actually be cheaper to go with DSL or Cable, believe it or not. I had to do the numbers to prove it to my mother-in-law, so I can dig them up for you if you want, but it was litterally less expensive for her to get cable Internet, and it's a much better experience.

I have Verizon DSL. Its plenty fast for surfing websites, and downloading files. I haven't been on a cable connection but in comparision to narrowband this is Heaven.

Cable is the best! It cost the most $$$$, but like JH said "it's well worth it"!!!

I had dial up and first and kept getting booted off of couldn't log on at all. I had to go with cable and love every minute of it. Also found a program that elimanates (spelling) basically all pop ups as well. I would want to throw the computer out of the window when 3-4 would come up at a a time...

But now everything is good...

We used to have AOL 23 dollars a month and a second line 25 dollars a month. Now we dropped the second line and went with the cable modem. We rent the modem for like 3 bucks a month and because we already had the platinum package with all the channels, we are only paying 24 dollars a month for cable modem service.....SCHWEET!!

Oh, I meant to give this link in my earlier post:
http://www.broadbandreports.com
A good site to learn about the broadband services in your area.
As for popups, stop using Internet Explorer and use
Mozilla Firefox. It's faster, more secure, and has built-in Google search and popup blocking (which works better than the pop-up blocking added to IE for Windows XP Service Pack 2), and has some nice features IE lacks, like tabbed browsing.

Also there is a program called "Ad-Aware", the "personal" version is free! It takes the "pop-up" crap out of your computer. The 1st time I ran it I had over 300 things in my comp., this took them out and stopped 98% of my "pop-ups". If anyone wants it

I second that - use FireFox, definitley not IE.

thats cool.... it was just a slow time of day when you posted this and it caught me off guard... just made me laugh....
I previously had AOL and your right, it does suck big time.... if you use the internet for more than checking e-mail, broadband is the way to go....and after you use it, you'll never go back... if you get online often enough you'll realize the money is worth it....

I'm using peoplepc. It's dial-up. It's not so bad. My pages load at a descent rate. It's only 12 bucks a month.

That was a long time ago that they were giving away computers. I guess that model didn't work out...

I don't know. I wasn't aware of that deal. I didn't get a computer. My deal consisted of a 30 day free trial. The cost of their service is less expensive than earthlink and AOL. It is a good service for those with dial-up. My friend has earth-link and they both seem equal in regards to quality and he's paying about $25 a month.

Funny, I was looking for something on their site about the free computer deal they started out with, and I happened on the fact that PeoplePC is owned by Earthlink (who bought the company in 2002).
Anyway, the original deal was, you get a free computer, and you just pay for Internet access. That was several years ago (late 90's), and computers weren't as cheap as they are now. Once computers started selling for sub-$600, and dial-up Internet reached a sizeable portion of the population, I guess they had to change their strategy.
Edit:
Here you go, from an old press release on the PeoplePC site:
About PeoplePC
PeoplePC's mission is to provide people with a comprehensive online solution that makes it easier, more convenient and more affordable for people to participate in the digital economy. PeoplePC offers members a new brand-name computer system, unlimited Internet access, in-home technical service and a value-packed online buying community -- all for as little as $24.95 a month over three years. In addition, PeoplePC provides enterprises with an integrated solution that scales easily and quickly, requires little additional infrastructure investment and provides the enterprise's employees, customers and affiliated parties with the same convenience, quality assurance and valuable benefits enjoyed by all PeoplePC members. i have cox cable. its 49.95.
how fast? go here:
http://reviews.cnet.com/7004-7254_7-0.html
punch in you info, and run the test. depending on your modem, isp and connection, you'll probably end up somewhere between 28 kbps and 56 kbps... my connection just hit 1337.6 kbps..... only 24 times faster than dial up!
i used to be happy with dial up, because i didn't know any better. i'll never use anything but broadband from now on. no disconnects, no waiting for the modem to connect, just hit the browser and bang..... homepage in about a second flat. its double the price, but i haven't had but one problem since december, and that was because the cable was out on my entire street. if you can swing the $$$, theres no question.

Get DSL. I pay $30/month.
In general, DSL companies are trying to compete on price, and Cable companies are trying to compete on speed, so DSL will be a bit slower but cheaper, and Cable will be faster but more expensive.
