C. Smith Back; Boschetti Released

The Redskins announced Thursday that they have signed linebacker Clifton Smith to the practice squad.

Smith was with the Redskins during training camp and made the 53-man roster coming out of preseason, but he was released on Tuesday when the Redskins claimed linebacker Dominique Stevenson off of waivers.

To make room for Smith, the Redskins released defensive tackle Ryan Boschetti from the practice squad.

Smith, 6-3, 255 lbs., spent 13 weeks on the Redskins practice squad last season before appearing in one game for the Redskins at the end of the year, collecting one tackle against Philadelphia (12/27/03). He compiled 13 tackles (8 solo) and one sack in the 2004 preseason.

Boschetti was a daggone good DT.

I don't know that I would be celebrating - he could have done some good for us if Noble can't hold up, or if we get another problem on the DL

Khary Campbell well outplayed Clifton Smith in the preseason

Well Rich...

I'm not celebrating that Boschetti's gone, just that my boy came back.

Salave'a is starting ahead of Noble this week. We have decent depth on the line.

And of course Campbell outplayed Smith, he got a lot more chances to show what he has.

Smith had 136 tackles his senior year and for some reason, still went undrafted. I'm tellin' ya, he's going to be a lot better for us than Boschetti ever would have been.

LOL Jake - if all yer "boys" were here there would be 400 Redskins and no other teams over 20 players...

I wouldn't say 4 DT is decent when one is bothered by an injury from training camp (Griffin) and Noble is coming back from a huge knee injury and is wearing a club on his left hand...

Boschetti got penetration - something we all like to see from a DL, stood up runners and made a nuisance of himself to the offense...

Clifton Smith got plowed over any time he got the chance when I saw him this preseason, by second and third stringers

Khary Campbell avoided blocks and made excellent tackles - didn't miss one that I saw

I dunno - I don't like the move personally, but I will place my faith in the Skins coaching staff I suppose...

I think it would be prudent to take a collective wait and see approach to our D. While on the surface it might not appear to be formidable, but we have two things weiging in our favor: 1-Gregg Williams is a master defensive strategist in todays NFL. He'll recognize the strengths and weaknesses that we have, and utilize them accordingly. 2- Our line is still young. At least we got young talent through free agency, and they could be developing into their prime. The bad part of that is that the potential for them to be a bust is there. But, the coaches must have seen something in Daniels and Griffin that they liked. So, they're young and improving. I like the fact that they're not proven like Kearse or Sapp. These kids we have have their careers ahead of them. Let's wait and see.

JP - Daniels and Griffin are both older vets :)

Daniels is 9th year, Griffin 4th, Salave'a 6th, Haley 4th, Noble 6th, Wynn 7th

Warner and Evans are the young pukes :)

Evans is 3rd and Warner 2nd

we need depth at the DL far more than you need autographs in yer "boys" book ::Grin::

oh - shall I remind you Salave'a had injury probs the last couple of years? :)

We have 4 DT... and 7 friggin LB already :)

sounds like the making of some 3-4 sets. My 2 cents

I don't need Clifton's autograph as of now but it's still easy to get nevertheless...

One reason I am so high about Clifton is that he is an underrated linebacker who just needs time to develop.

Boschetti needs time to develop, too, so what's your point about depth? Boschetti (IMO) isn't going to be ready to fill in for an injured starter.

In our case, the DT position is a little light in depth and injury prone for my taste... better to have a 5th DT available than an 8th or 9th LB is all I am saying
