Does anyone remember the last time the redskins blitzed? I don't. I'm so excited to see an actual defense from the skins that I can't wait.

Anything is better than watching is run a prevent defense for an entire game. Oh how good it will feel to not get scored on by the same play 2 times in one game!!!!! Im just excited.

Was it the TB game last year where no one figured out how to defend a screen pass to a running back the entire game. I almost lept from the top of fedex.

Ok Blitz I know, what is prevent defense??

It's a sorry defense designed to allow short gains but to "prevent" big ones. It's usually used at the end of games or on 3rd and long to "prevent" the other team from scoring on a big play. Usually, the only thing it does is "prevent" the team using it from winning.

Are you asking, "When's the last time the Redskins blitzed?" or, "When's the last time the Redskins were successful blitzing?" Those are two entirely different questions.

I remember plenty of times last season when the Redskins blitzed, but Lavar or Trotter ended up getting blocked by a running back and the other team's quarterback had time to look downfield, where a receiver was invariably running uncovered.

I'm optimistic Wiilliams' schemes will be more successful, but remember it's not enough just to blitz. You have to blitz well.

MY GOODNESS YOU HIT THE NAIL ON THE HEAD!!! Exactly, I don't think I've ever had soo many obscenities come out of my mouth in such a short period of time. That was the day I quit Steve Spurrier and that LOSER G. Edwards. How the can that happen to a "professional" team. UGH, it still makes me mad. Not to mention that we got burned on it a couple of weeks later. I know a few people blamed the defensive players, but they shouldn't have. If you noticed on the 3 times we were scored on, Bailey and everyone else did the same thing, which means they were running the play called by Edwards, or they're just completely incompentent....

Which we couldn't do well last year. Hopefully teams wont be able to pick up our blitzes because they'll have their hands full with our front four.

To answer the original question, when Marvin Lewis was around.

I think we know that TB will be well represented on defense, but how have they looked offensively? I thought this line was a concern for them?

If memory serves me correctly, it was Tampa using the "bunch" formation that they ran over and over again, scoring at will.

One thing to watch out for this Sunday will be Gruden using the bootleg against us. If you remember the first preseason game, Denver ran it successfully against our starters. They used our agressiveness against us. I'm sure I am not the only one who noticed the effectiveness of this play.

I am sure that Gregg Williams worked on it the next week, but I bet we see it this Sunday. I too was spewing expletives when they ran that play on us over and over without any change in how we played it. Lavar the following week said that they had never prepared for it during camp.

I tell you that not only did the screen that we couldn't defend infuriate me... the QB rollouts throwing to the TEs in the end zone twice, and the same play to a WR the third time really tweaked my last nerve...

The one prior to that? RP and the 92 defense.... boy did they shellack the heck out of offenses... What they did to Buffalo in the Superbowl was astounding and awe inspiring... they ought to play that Superbowl NFL Films for the defense in the locker room Saturday night before the Tampa game... there was all sorts of credit given to the defense

That man was a genius and did quite well with the personel he had. If he was here for consecutive seasons and was able to build a group of his players...watch out!

I remember us getting our butt kicked on a play where the ball was snapped and the whole team motioned left but the t/e rolled right and it was just a short toss to them. Any misdirection play, we were toast.

Yoder was his name. Never heard of him before the game and haven't heard from him since.

yep - he was a third stringer that was starting his first game due to their first and second string TEs being out

"Prevent" defense was adequately explained, but I'm still waiting to read a real good breakdown of the featured Reskins defense for most of the past 12 years.
We called it the "Permit". I think there was a "Welcome" mat involved, which had to be laid out in an orderly fashion directly in front of the opposing RB. I seem to recall a long red carpet, as well.

the play that sticks out for me was a monday night game against the 49ers. It musta been during the end of the Norval tenure. 49ers on like our 2 yard line. Steve Young(I believe) walks up to the center. We are in a 4-3. The tackles line up on the outside edge of the guards. No goal line defense mind you. The ball is about to be snapped. Skins players look somewhat lost. I start screaming at the TV, watch the QB sneak, watch the QB sneak!!!!!

Guess what happened. The QB walks into the endzone. He didn't even dive, just friggin walks into the endzone...

I spent the rest of the game screaming at the TV, while watching us lose by 30 or so.

I'm so sick of play like that. Thank god saint joe is back, and discipline will be the staple of redskins play now.

Well, we'll see what we can do. I dont think that we'll blitz too much. I think if we do, they will kill us. B Johnson is known for getting the ball off to a receiver when pressure is applied.
