it seems as if we aren't making any real moves towards improving our defense.it must be that we think we are set it that area. I still think that we could have added another pass rusher to our line that would have made our defense complete. Iv'e been very pleased with our defense to date, but still wish we could have made a move on O-gun or Gildon. What do you think???

O-Gun would have been nice, but we are good for pass-rushing LB's. No need to add Gildon. I think the Defense will do fine. Marvin Lewis used a less talented defensive unit to finish top 5 two years ago. Coach Williams is much closer to Marvin Lewis than he is to George Edwards, IMHO.

i agree with the pass rush statement, however this "D"will be an attacking , blitzing "D' where everyone is used as a pass rusher so where we might lack in personnel on the d-line we will more than make up in schemes and hustle.REDSKINZ4EVER !!!!

I think our defense is going to be 1000x better than last year. While our DL needs work, our overall front 7 should be great. I can't wait to see our attacking mode!

It looks as though Williams is going to be creative in applying pressure on the QB (as stated by redskinz4ever).
The very first play against Atlanta he blitzed both corners and dropped both DT's into coverage. I've never seen anything like that before. I think he did that just to play with Grudens head.

I'm not worried...

I'm worried about Tampa Bay employing 3 and 4 WR sets.
I'm not impressed with our corners and in this day and age of no contact allowed beyond 5 yards Galloway will become a much bigger threat. Sean Taylor will be busy on Sundayy.

Our defense is still ahead of our offense. Our defense is ready and we will need it for the first 3-5 games as our offense gets its act together.

I also agree that we are going to be better defensively. The thinking seems to be that we are who we are and we can get better without giving up on the potential for having the room to improve next year and beyond.
These guys, on both offense and defense are going to be better because of the coaching. Next year we will build on this. I really think there is a plan for this year and next with a very real shot at a SB in the next year or 2.

I think things are going to follow right along with GW's very first defensive play in the very first mini camp when he said... Attack. And then brought all 11 guys!!! Things are going to be a whole lot different this year.

Dont forget that our 1st string against their 1st string didnt give up any touchdowns in preseason. I think that we will do great. Top 5 overall in the league.

I'm not worried at all the defense will be fine, stop the run first and it will be easier to stop the pass. I think a top 5 defense is not out of the question.

They have that defensive call in Madden, out of the 4-3 set.

My only two concerns are, first pressure on the QB and second, one on one coverage in the secondary (esp. with the new rules).

As far as pressure on the QB I have one play to remind you of. The double corner blitz I think was what it was called. And it really helped us against Atlanta. Hopefully it will be useful on Tampa Bay.

Your are right...but that was Atlanta, preseason and a unproven QB who was coming off an injury. However if the only way we get pressure on the QB is by a double corner blitz and not from the DL, I'm a little nervous.

I agree with Chillwill that our corners (particularly the 3rd and 4th corners) are suspect. If the pass rush is not there we could be in trouble. Hopefully the dl can provide some pass rush, if we rely to heavily on blitzing we may ultimately pay the price .

dude, get real. vick is obviously a little more in pain than people were led to believe. unproven, no. a healthy vick would have sidesteped springs AND smoot, and turned nothing into something. did you watch football two years ago? vick SINGLE HANDEDLY took atl to the playoffs. your argument isn't holding any water.
but i do agree with your assesment that if the only way we get any pressure is to blitz, then we've definantly got problems.

Jim... have you been watching the preseason?
5 games and the starting D did not give up a first quarter TD I believe.
Most of the starters were out when the Lambs started scoring.
The Fish had 98yrds. of offense for the whole game!
Atlanta (and Vick) barely got out of DC alive.
AND WE HAVEN'T EVEN SHOWN THE LEAGUE THE FULL DESTRUCTIVE POWER OF THIS DEFENSE !!!!
Sorry, I lost it for a minute there.

First and foremost, pass rush from the DLine. We don't have much of it, although I think it will be improved. That's just how it is and all GW can do about it is make up for it with blitzing schemes. We have some very fast guys on this defense. They will get it done. Dallas had the #1 defense last year. Does anyone here other than Cowboys fans think Dallas has a talented defense? Dallas has far less talent on D than we do. Difference is, they were very effective blitzing last year. Vaulted them all the way to #1. Our defense is going to be very good. We will get burned from time to time from all the blitzing. That's the nature of the game, but we will be very good.
As far as our DBs. I think we are pretty good at 1 and 2. 3 and 4 are a signifigant drop, but I think on 3 or 4 WR sets, Taylor slides over to the 2nd WR, Walt Harris takes 3rd WR. Arrington or Washington probably covers the 4th WR. If not a LB, then Bowen slides up to cover and Andre Lott is the safety. I think there are many things we can do defensively in those sets. You just got to remember that Sean Taylor can line up as a DB, and Andre Lott can take his spot at SS and do a decent job.
I also look for ST to take over at DB if there is an injury. Hopefully we won't have to find out =)

I'm hoping our DB's can hold up, Smoot has me a bit worried. He still seems to be out of position sometimes, I know it was preseason, etc, etc, but its still a bit worrying.
