SF to get conditional pick for Whiting
The Eagles and the 49ers finally resolved the Brandon Whiting matter over the weekend, nearly 6 months after the defensive end was sent to San Francisco in the Terrell Owens trade.
Whiting needed shoulder surgery, so the Eagles and 49ers originally agreed he'd return to Philadelphia and the 49ers would get a third-round pick if he couldn't pass a preseason physical. That deadline eventually was moved from Sept. 1 to Sept. 5. It was clear the 49ers wanted to keep Whiting - who practiced with them yesterday for the first time - but they weren't happy he wouldn't be ready for the start of the season.
So the Eagles have agreed to add a conditional draft pick to the deal, depending on when Whiting is available to San Francisco. If he only misses Week 1 - which seems a likely scenario - the 49ers get a seventh-round pick. If he misses 2 to 4 weeks, the pick becomes a sixth-rounder. If it's 5 weeks or longer, the pick is in the fifth round.
