Jaguars cut Douglas
8/30/04
By Vic Ketchman, jaguars.com senior editor

They moved on when they cut Tony Brackens last week. Today, the Jaguars cut their losses by releasing Hugh Douglas.

Quarterback Doug Johnson, wide receiver Jimmy Redmond and running back Frank Moreau were also waived and rookie linebacker Jorge Cordova will be placed on the injured reserve list. Those moves leave the Jaguars at 69 players on their roster, including four NFL Europe League roster exemptions. Teams must have cut their rosters to 65 players, plus exemptions, by four p.m. on Tuesday.

Douglas' release comes as a shock, since the Jaguars were considered to have a desperate situation at defensive end. Brackens and Douglas were the Jaguars' starting defensive ends last season. Now, both are gone, having been cut on consecutive Mondays.

Douglas was signed to a rich free-agent contract in 2003, but suffered through the worst season of his distinguished nine-year career. He contributed only 3.5 sacks in '03 and, this summer, described himself as having been in a “funk” all year.

"I got into a funk and I never got out of it until the end of the season,” Douglas told reporters during the first week of training camp. He vowed to make amends and appeared to be in better physical condition and possessing greater energy in this year's camp than he had last season.

But it didn't translate into an improved performance on the field. Through three preseason games, Douglas had one solo tackle, four total tackles and four quarterback pressures. He registered no sacks.

Suspicion began to swirl that Douglas was in danger of being cut, but the move still must be regarded as a shock, considering the Jaguars' personnel at the defensive end position. Paul Spicer is dug in as Brackens' replacement at left defensive end, but right defensive end would seem wide open. Rob Meier, Brandon Green, rookie Bobby McCray and journeyman Courtland Bullard are the candidates on the current roster to replace Douglas. Meier made seven starts at right defensive end in 2002, after Brackens was placed on the injured reserve list.

The release of Douglas will save the Jaguars considerable money. Douglas would've earned a $3.345 million salary this season. His salary cap hit would've been $4.545 million but is now reduced to $1.2 million of prorated bonus amortization. The remainder of Douglas' bonus amortization following this season, $3.6 million, will be charged to the Jaguars' 2005 salary cap.

Johnson was signed by the Jaguars last spring, when the effects of Crohn's Disease threatened backup quarterback David Garrard's future. Garrard has recovered fully from June surgery, however, and Quinn Grey clearly out-played Johnson in the preseason to claim the third quarterback job.

Redmond was a special teams coverage star for the Jaguars last year, but he had not developed as a wide receiver and the Jaguars have a glut of “gunners” among players who also provide depth at their respective positions.

Moreau was signed last week to help ease the Jaguars' injury situation at running back. It was understood then that signing Moreau was a stop-gap move.

Cordova suffered a major knee injury in training camp two weeks ago and was lost for the season. He was selected in the third round of this year's draft and was expected to be a pass-rush specialist. The release of Douglas would've clearly provided a lot of playing time for Cordova

Douglas was good back in the day; however, like Trotter, his best days might have been while he was playing for the Eagles.

I'm not confident that spending a ton a money on him is the best thing for the Redskins.

A ton of money wont be required. And Phillip Daniels best days are behind him too...only difference is that Douglas had a monster season 2 seasons ago and Douglas is not injured at this moment.

He'll sign for the minimum with a modest bonus w/ a chip on his shoulder. Who else do we have, who better than Douglas will be released in the coming weeks?

If we can get him for minimum $$, then I agree...let's go get him. If we have to pay $3+ million, I say pass.

Let's work him out. That's free and we can guage what he's got left. He was good in Philly's aggresive schemes and we are going to be aggresive, so it could be a good fit, if he's not done with and we can get him cheap.

I haven't even seen Daniels play... so it's hard to really tell if his best days are behind him yet....

NO, NO, NO, NO, NO, NO, NO!!!!!! Not another re-tread whose best days are behind him! Bring in someone young, who wants to play for Joe Gibbs (heckuva job recommendation in later years), let them learn the system and contribute. Hugh Douglas got played out with Philthydelphia and New York, if the Jags cut him, as desperate as they are for a good player at that position, what does that say about his level of play? All I see here is another Neon Deion, a big name past his prime. No way should the Redskins pursue him. Having said that, if Joe Gibbs decides that he's worth pursuing, I will just have to suck it up and hope for the best...

If he's cheap, then it's worth the risk. Young talented lineman aren't just waiting to be signed...

i think we should bring in douglas ( if we can get him cheap !!!) we can always use another pass rusher on that D-LINE of ours. yeah he's a little over the hill but he will still make our D-LINE better !!! REDSKINZFAN !!! 8)

As a Jaguar fan (now my 2nd team-I go with Brunell) who watched all their games last year...Douglas stunk it up, he was invisible all year (except for his salary).

HE IS NOT WORTH IT NO MATTER HOW CHEAP YOU GET HIM.

He admitted coming in out of shape last year, he vowed to be ready this year. He has shown nothing in pre-season thus far.

He will just be a distraction and P-off the current players who are working hard.

For you guys, he's not. He's not the player he was three years ago. He's worn out. He'd be perfect in a rotation, but not as the guy.

His "best days behind him" might be better then everyone on our line. I'd take the chance, he won't make us any worse!

Deion's best days are behind him and the Ravens just signed him.

Depth is key in the NFL.
Douglas was cut for cap purposes in JAX, now we can get him on the cheap.

There is not 1 other defensive end on the market that is better...so why not?
I will go ahead and say he will at least come to Ashburn for a workout....

Waste of time. You won't get him cheap enough.

The Jags are desperate for a pass rush from the DE position, they wouldn't let him go if he was showing any hope of being a factor.

Don't be surprised if/when the Eagles make a play for Douglas...considering the present state of their defensive line.

Word is both the Eagles and Skins are interested in him right now. Supposedly Hugh said today he'd love to come back to Philly, but he said that right before he signed in Jacksonville too.

Trotter and now this have taught the league a good lesson.... don't take a player Andy Reid is willing to get rid of.... I bet those corners suck this year too.... I hate to give the eagles credit but... they have been pretty right in judging talent/potential....

stay away from douglas.....

Taylor will suck, but Vincent's at least got tackling ability to fall back on.

Wait until Danny boy dangles that huge signing bonus in front him. Hugh will then say, "Eagles? Eagles who?"

i say if we can get him cheap and put him into rotation and not force him to be a starter, then i say let's see what he has.

The Bears and Giants are in the mix now.

give him a one year contract and see how he does...it couldn't hurt. keep him this year until we can get a stud in the draft next year...IMO

how old is HD now? is it 32 or 33? maybe a good fit with the nfl retiremnet home aka the faiders. j/k

seems that all we've got going for us is a rotation right now. he's worth a look see.

He'd still be the guy in your rotation. I can't think of anyone else along your line that would require a two blockers.
