First cuts

ASHBURN, Va. (AP)– Middle linebacker Kevin Mitchell and wide receiver Cliff Russell were among ten cuts made Sunday as the Washington Redskins started to trim their roster before Tuesday's deadline.
Washington has four more players to cut as all teams must have their rosters down to 65 players by Tuesday afternoon.
Mitchell is a ten-year veteran who had his best year in 2001, when he made 82 tackles. He started in the preseason opener because projected starter Mike Barrow had a sore knee. But he's been sinking in the depth chart ever since.
Russell was a third-round pick by the 'Skins in 2002. A knee injury ended his rookie season and he's been bothered by a hamstring injury throughout camp.
Coach Joe Gibbs says cutting players is "the worst part of what we do."
Full list:
DL Nic Clemons
WR Scott Cloman
CB Michael Hall
DL Norman Heuer
LB Kevin Mitchell
WR Cliff Russell
WR John Standeford
P Kevin Stemke
LB Billy Strother
DL Greg White

Wow. Cloman and Mitchell? To be honest, I'm shocked, ecspecially due to the fact that Barrow has yet to play a snap this preseason...

Mitchell was one of the ones allowing all that running in the second half

Must be a misprint Ade Jimoh still employed with the Washington Redskins... I was hoping Mitchell and White would stick around, I'm sure someone will pick them up

He must be doing something
right in practice, it's gotta be in practice because it ain't on the field!

I call him "Sure Thing" Jimoh... cause he is a sure thing for the other teams
I don't understand not letting him go... really I don't

Spurrier said several times that Ade Jimoh worked hard and did good things in practice. I think that's why my dad feels so bad for him, and vocalizes his sympathies each time a bad thing happens because of him in a game (and it happens a lot).
I have no sympathy for him.
I guess Mitchell was released so that he could find a job somewhere else? I was definitely surprised to see Cloman go before guys like Jaffar (sp?) Williams (is that even right?). . .er. . .the guy from UMD. (That's terrible, I even was going there while he was playing).

The checks keep clearing.
Has to be.

I can't believe we cut Mitchell.
I am really surprised we cut John Standeford. I personally though he was the UDFA who Gibbs said would be a future Pro Bowler.

Maybe Jimoh changed his name to Kevim Mitchell. If not I would not have cut him.
But lets be honest. Antonio Pierce played played with fire and passion. He simply played better than Mitchell. I will miss him, but honestly I would rather see him go elsewhere, than have tobe our 3rd, or even second stringer.
I also liked Cloman, but I think Gibbs, is going with 5 WR's, and 5 TE's/H-Backs
I think we will see a receiveng core of Coles, Gardner, McCants, Thrash, and Jacobs
And a TE/H-back core of Rasby,Royal,Cooley,Kozwolski, and, Sellers.

I agree that Pierce beat him out for the backup spot, but I'm just suprised we cut him before Barrow even stepped on the field. I guess it's a professional courtesy so he can find another job..

I really haven't seen much of Robert Royals this pre-season
Is he playing the true TE spot or H-Back
It might be close between him and Stephens

Damn it!
God that sucks that we cut Mitchell and Cloman! I really like Mitchell. He's too damn good to let go!
Cloman had a good shot to make the team but his cut is somewhat understandable although I wanted him to make the roster. I'm sort of surprised to see Cliff Russell gone. Not because of his skill (GREAT speed but can't catch) but because he's Cliff Russell. I got used to seeing him on the roster. Wish he could have done more here.
Damn it. I really wanted to kep Mitchell. He's not a 10 year veteran for nothing. I love Gibbs but that move is bs. He's going to start somewhere and come back to kick our butts. I know that Gibbs did it to give him a chance to start elsewher but damn it.
Another one of my boys is gone. Damn it. I'm really mad. I just hope he signs with a team (not in the NFC East) that comes to FedEx Field this year so I could at least talk to him before the game and wish him luck with the rest of his career.

Hey SS III
I don't think that Gibbs would have cut Mitchell if Barrow was seriously hurt. I think this means that he is very close, to returning.

Stephens is playing the traditional tight end I believe. It will be interesting to see who locks up the final spot.

ey, Koz and Sellers have all locked up there spots. And with the O line giving up no sacks, and Rasby staying in to block all the time, he has his spot.
There is 1 spot and we have to see, who wants it more.

Wow I am really disappointed. I thought Clemons and White had shown some passion. And I was also sure Jimoh would be on that list. Damn.
I am however glad not to see Gibran. I had he gets some playing time this week. And ends up on our practice squad!
Sorry about Mitchell Jake, the second I heard it I told Scott "Jake is not going to be happy!"

I cannot believe that Ade Jimoh and Ralph Brown were not on that list!

Maybe Ade Jimoh is one of the ones they couldn't contact right away, so they're waiting to announce it until after they tell him.
Hell, maybe he left the country after the Rams game!
Either way, he's NOT going to be on this team come Sept 12.

You're right, he's not seriously hurt (if it was the regular season I think he would have been playing all along), but even so I'm suprised you cut a guy like Mitchell without seeing your starter play a snap.
I'm not saying it's the wrong move, but it suprised me. Who knows, maybe Mitchell started becoming a problem in the lockerroom after dropping from first to third string this summer..

Mitchell seemed to have lost two or three steps there in the middle while the third string offense of the Rams were opening holes for Steven Jackson to gain over 100 yards right through him...
Sorry - I just think that the first and second stringers were capable of limiting Faulk and Jackson but the third string crumbled... and he was middle LB and missed a LOT of tackles

If you really are objective about it, Mitchell was a journeyman linebacker who played for a 5 - 11 team. Guys, a new era is upon us. We have been watching mediocrity for the last five years. Iffy? C'mon. Rock? C'mon.
These coaches know what they are doing and we are upgrading our talent from teams that sucked.

This might not be his "first cut", but he sure needs a "second cut"! LOL

Antonio Pierce was a mediocre linebacker who played for a 5-11 team last season. What's your point?
