Redskins.com: Rams Preview

Post by Jake »

Redskins @ St. Louis Rams

The Redskins and head coach Joe Gibbs continue their preseason campaign with their second road game in as many weeks, traveling to St. Louis to take on the Rams on Friday, Aug. 27 at 8 p.m.

The Redskins are looking to continue their winning ways after a 17-0 victory over Miami last week. The Redskins recorded a strong performance in all three phases of the game, rushing 54 times for 181 yards and two touchdowns while limiting the Dolphins to only 98 total yards.

"We kind of took it to heart when we turned the ball over four times [the previous week against Carolina]," Gibbs said shortly after the win against the Dolphins. "I was real pleased that we made the corrections there. We didn't turn the ball over, we played smart and our defense continued to play well. Those are all good signs.

"Each week you want to see more and do better, continuing to polish things. So what you want to see--and we're starting to see it--is steady progress and you want to try to eliminate the mistakes from the week before."

This week, the Redskins travel to St. Louis to take on the Rams, a team Washington has not faced in the preseason since 1990 when Gibbs was in his first tenure as head coach. The last time the two teams met was in 2002, when the Redskins defeated the Rams 20-17 at FedExField.

Joe Gibbs rejoined the Redskins in January and returns to the playing field after 12 seasons. The offseason has been a busy one for Coach Gibbs and his staff, spending extensive time getting ready for the 2004 season both on the practice fields at Redskins Park and in the meeting rooms.

Gibbs, who coached the team from 1981 to 1992, turned the Redskins into an NFL dynasty during his first tenure. He led the Redskins to four Super Bowls--winnning three titles--and accumulated a 124-60 record during regular season play and an amazing 16-5 postseason record.

Washington features many new faces on the Redskins sidelines after another busy offseason of free agency acquisitions, including running back Clinton Portis, linebacker Marcus Washington, defensive linemen Phillip Daniels and Cornelius Griffin, quarterback Mark Brunell, cornerback Shawn Springs and 2004 first-round draft pick safety Sean Taylor.

Redskins fans can watch the continued progress of the team Friday night on the national FOX broadcast from St. Louis.
