Carter expected to backup Pennington

Free agent quarterback Quincy Carter, released by the Dallas Cowboys on Aug. 4 after allegedly testing positive in violation of the NFL substance abuse policy, on Tuesday sign a one-year contract with the New York Jets.

Financial details of the deal were not immediately available, but it is believed Carter will earn more than $500,000. Once he learns the Jets offense, Carter is expected to serve as the primary backup to starter Chad Pennington.

Several teams had inquired about Carter but most had opted to wait for a resolution of his case in which the NFL Players Association has charged that the Cowboys violated statutes of the collective bargaining agreement in releasing him.

The CBA stipulates that a player cannot be released solely for violating the substance abuse policy. Dallas officials have insisted they were well within their rights to cut a player who has been their starting quarterback for the past three seasons.

New York was apparently more aggressive than other teams interested in Carter, in part because they have no experienced depth at the backup spots. The Jets coaches are said to be very excited about working with Carter, but the deal is beneficial to the quarterback as well, since it will expose him to a new offensive system, something he can tout when he is in the free agent market next spring.

The projected primary backup to Pennington when training camp opened, second-year veteran Brooks Bollinger is sidelined by a sprained knee. The No. 3 QB on the depth chart is former CFL star Ricky Ray, who is in his first NFL training camp.

Basically, Carter's aim is to get back into a structured football environment, maybe get some snaps this season, and then go back into the free agent market next spring as an unrestricted player.

Carter, 26, was the Cowboys' second-round pick in the 2001 draft. In three years, Carter started 31 games and completed 507 of 902 passes, for 5,839 yards, with 29 touchdown passes and 36 interceptions.

Vinny was too until he encountered the turf with his own foot... strangest injury I will ever see... drops back gently, knee buckles with no one hitting it, Vinny on his back and the bench...

It was truly a strange happenstance...

Hope the boys keep their fields up to par for ole Vinny...

Think Henson will loosen Vinny's spikes? :)

Quincy was a second tier QB at best, and that is what the Jets needed with all their money going out to other players... Hope they are happy to have him if Chad gets bounced like he did last year

Well I like Brook Bollinger but i understand he is hurt. All they have behind him is Ricky Ray from the CFL who did pretty good up in Canada.

The field is 110 yards long, 65 yards wide, and the endzones are 20 yards deep. Plus they have 12 guys on the field at once. (and it's not even a penalty up there! )

What the hell a rouge is, I have no idea.

I think it's a 2 pointer. I think it also means "Red" in French. I took French class in middle school.

Rouge definitely means red in French, but the site I linked to says you get 1 point for it, and they had already covered the 2 point conversion. Maybe it means to draw blood, or since it is French, maybe you get 1 point for surrendering.

Nope, it's a one pointer but yes, rouge is red in French.

Wow, a CFL thread!! Yippee! What do you want to know?...

A rouge is a 1 pointer (you get that for missing a field goal and for punting the ball through the end zone).

You also get 1 point for every fan in the stands. :)

So you get points for missing field goals and for touchbacks? :hmm: Sounds like they could use some of our former kickers up there. They would be missing all kinds of field goals.

Do they have to kick off after a rouge?

Seriously, with the 5 man rotation we had at kicker a couple of years ago, we could have been the top scorers in the CFL.

These are the last words Henson will hear when he steps behind center and Marcus Washington comes in on a blitz to knock him silly.

What a disgrace the cowpukes have become with their
drug problems. 50 bucks says if the league would
have drug tested the pukes in the early 90's ...
0 S.Bowls. Hell they wouldnt have had a team.

On the other hand, if the NFL had tested back then, maybe some of those Cowboys wouldn't have done drugs and thus been better football players, leading to four straight Super Bowls...
